There's pictures of one of my cousins from when she was a little girl in the 70s of exactly this. She called it "gigging and paying", or in proper English, "digging and playing". She was covered in dirt and mud after digging a pretty big hole for a 4 year old. Sometimes you just wanna dig a hole and see what happens, you know? Hell, if my back wasn't destroyed in a car wreck and someone asked me if I wanted to play in the dirt and dig a big hole I'd happily say yes. You can find cool stuff in the dirt sometimes!

"Yup... got a nice bright white box for a head, since I was born! Still... better than my brother.
