The Purge - I’m a “running out of space “ guy , so I did start to purge records that I definitely know I don’t want. It then got more difficult as there are a fair number of records where I’m not sure and where I might regret parting with them at some future point and some have more sentimental/ nostalgic value than anything else. It’s never an easy exercise. !
Definitely not easy…you never want to have regrets. I also try to base my decision around the album’s rarity. If it can easily be bought back in the future at a cheap price (if I changed my mind), I’m more willing to move on from it.
The purge - i'm just about to do a video on this exact topic. I just sold 200 off that I basically have no idea where they came from or what they sound like. I'm thinking of going even more into this. Feels good. It started to just free up space but it's been a bit of a surprise and a truly freeing experience
The Purge. This really spoke to me. Thank you for this. I have been donating a lot of records to the charity shops on a weekly basis and very happy for these albums to have a new home for someone else to enjoy.
Been there ….recently got my TT back into the set up …went through my entire vinyl collection..edited out multiple copies and more importantly poor crappy pressings…and yes,I kept a few that were 50/50 only become I love the music . Have a great evening.
I actually made a few list on my phone a few months back regarding records I didn't play as much and wanted to give them a revisit. Fortunately I still liked most of the albums and I plan on keeping them, but I did trade a few away. I liked this practice and I think I'll definitely keep using it as time goes on.
I've been thinking about selling some records to upgrade my gear. I did trade 10 or so records yesterday for 7 or 8 new ones - that was fun. It's challenging for me to sell records, but at the same time I have 10 or so boxes of records in the basement that are not getting listened to too often. Your video helped me feel a little more comfortable selling records.
Intersesting point view, maybe I should be doing a similar video, when I moved from France to Canada I decided to keep my vinyl record and to purge 90% of my CDs, it was a tough choice to make.
The purge! Enjoyed the topic and your style … subscribed! As far as getting rid of my collection, it’s definitely on my mind. Currently reaching the age that I would hate to see my collection by dumped off at the local Goodwill … I have a few records that have some value and I’m afraid my family wouldn’t know … thanks!
Thanks for sharing and subscribing! Collections are definitely tough to manage as the years pass if no one wants to inherit your hobby/collection in the event you ever want to downsize.
Selling records is very hard. I usually take them to goodwill. One time a guy in the goodwill parking lot asked to see the records I was donating before I brought them in. Out of about 200 albums, he only wanted 3. I was giving them for free, and he still only wanted 3. I guess my taste in music is crap. LOL.
The Purge. I have all of my records in a spreadsheet. I update the number of plays each time I listen to the album. At some point in time, I plan to purge the records that have only a couple of plays or none.
I use spreadsheets too (for some of my collection), but never considered inputting the amount of times you play the album to help decide what to get rid of-that’s a smart idea!
The Purge- I regularly sell records I don't listen to anymore so my collection is “all killer, no filler” as they say. I wouldn't say I'm running out of space as much as it might be time but another shelf soon. :)
The Purge! Great movie for real, though. 😂 I feel this! Only been collecting a few years, but I’ve definitely been purging my collection here and there. I tend to usually stick to new/sealed records and don’t tend to get used beyond some inherited ones from family. I even have gotten a few lucky OG pressings still sealed on occasion. I definitely tend to lean towards albums that I like for most, if not all the songs on them as opposed to just one or two songs. Keeping a Discogs is definitely helpful so that I don’t have any more accidental duplicates. 😂 Love your channel, man. Keep it up!
The purge!! 🤡👺💀🙀 It’s funny you are making a video on this topic - because I literally went thru my collection last week to purge. It was more so to make extra room in my “main” area for only records that I love, and to move all the extras, excess, and impulse buys to a couple crates that are below and out of view. However - when someone on Reddit mentioned a certain press of a record that I own and happened to buy for $25 in 2006 was currently valued at +$600 on discogs… the very slow wheels in my head started turning. $490 later, I’m getting ready to drop it off at the post office this morning. Moral..? Price your collection every 5 or so years, people! You might be sitting on a gem that can earn you a good amount of cash, while simultaneously making someone else’s day by finally filling that hole in their collection. Turns out I have at least 4 or 5 other apparently very valuable records similarly priced. And while I love these records and prefer not to let them go, it’s comforting to know that when, god-forbid, I get into a bind, selling a few of these records could be the answer to solving a financial issue. Anyways, love the channel Michael.. another great video as usual. I’ve been subscribed about 2 years now, and they’re always full of great info, helpful tips, honest reviews, and your friendly personality. Not to mention, you’re rather pleasant on the eyes 🤭 Keep up the great work
Wow, great story! That’s a really good idea about pricing your record collection every now and then. I think that’s great advice. Congrats on getting so much cash for that record, too! And thanks for watching the channel for so long!
always enjoy your videos even if its about "THE PURGE" im thinking of starting my purge slowly maybe like 5% of my total collection to start (have about 500) so that would be like 25 records to start with, im sure i can finde 25 that have been collecting dust.
The Purge OK, here’s my take. I’m like you, I prefer to buy used vinyl, sometimes I’ll find something that I really want, but the condition of it is less than perfect, I would buy it, and then later if I found the same thing in a better condition, I would buy it and use the other for trade next time I go shopping.
The Purge!- I'm thinking it's time to turn quite a few loose(sell) in my collection, as well as be very careful with what I buy, because of finding a couple of single album pressings nothing extra going for 70 dollars. Insane!
Sometimes you find a record , sometimes a record finds you.Its normal to trim the fat, and make room for new records . Enjoy the analog ride into the future. Vinylperv .Subbed
Great video and thanks for sharing, we just subscribed. We never get rid of our vinyl. However we are incredibly selective. if we don’t think we’ll spin it more than once, we won’t buy it. We also buy CD’s. We own more than 400 + records and listen to them all. Besides, these days, vinyl has gotten incredibly expensive! However, Blue Note lately are probably the best buy!🎧
Thanks for subscribing. I also collect CD’s too. Being selective when buying is definitely the way to go. But purging every now and then is healthy too.
The Purge! Yeah, I'm space/spouse limited. I've been into vinyl since 2009. I was really lucky in that I was everyone's "guy" to unload all their vinyl that had been collecting dust in storage. I would tell folks that I wouldn't be keeping the majority of what they gave me and I think they just wanted it out of their house. It was great, but... Over time, I had well over 500 records and even though I gave everything at least one spin, I wasn't listening to a lot of my collection. It was cathartic to go through and really evaluate if something was worth keeping. Nowadays I don't necessarily need to purge that much and the "donations" have dried up but I don't buy as much new stuff either. See if your local shop will trade for something you want. You might have to trade 20 old records to get one new one you want but hey, at least you know you'll be listening to it.
I think that’s really great advice. I agree that letting go of records you don’t love and are just taking up space can be really cathartic and healthy to do.
The purge! I’m purging right now actually. Sitting on a collection of about 1000 records but know that I could probably trim that back by 100-200 records fairly quickly. Read this on another forum and think it’s pretty good advice: 1. Is it an essential album? (e.g. Revolver yes, Help! probably not) 2. Is it non-essential but you play it a lot? 3. Is it fetching significantly good money used? No to all 3- offload these first. Then no to 2, depending on which 2 are most important to you. I’m wringing my hands about a Hoyt Axton compilation at the moment 😂
@@DevotedtoVinyl sorry for the ambiguity in my wording. Actually trim it down to around 800 or so records. So get rid of about 200. I probably have a hardcore 250 or so untouchables and then a heap I like to keep around for sentimental/fun/occasional listening sessions. That Hoyt Axton record is a great example of the line ball records.
Hey brotha I've been watching ur videos for a while they r so freaking helpful 💎❤️ something about the records that you showed in this video have me completely drawn on a level that I can't even find the words to explain will it be too much to ask can you send me a list of every record that was in that video 🙏🏼
The Purge ! Not only do I collect record albums. But I also sell on the side at small shows here in Honolulu Hawaii. Not only does it make make more room to add more music to my collection, but also get rid of music I'm no longer into, or the quality or the record isn't up to par because of the recording. "(RSD) released of live shows". Purging is a good way to recycle ♻️. You can always buy it again down the road, might cost more but what doesn't? I've been so burnt-out on vinyl prices, that I started buying 8-track tapes, a lot cheaper on the music I grew up with in the 1970's & 1960s. & so convenient to play & it's also analog sound. Don't get me wrong, I still have my record collection but slowly purging & keeping what I really want to listen to & not because it's rare or valuable, now is a good time to sell your valuable priced records, because people are buying & paying the price for them, everyday someone new starts collecting Vinyl & end up buy vintage vinyl too.
Thanks for sharing. I share that mentality too. Unless you’re unloading a rare record, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to track it back down again if you have regrets. How are you finding the prices for 8 track tapes compare to vinyl?
Well you showed a couple of 50's easy listening records, a Carpenters record and a Platters record so just as and example, those records are hard to sell, you won't get money there to buy more records. If you want to get money you'll have to sell Prince, James Brown, The Meters or Funkadelic and I dont think you or me would like to sell those at some point.
I'm at the purging stage - i used to djay back in the day - i just got my 2 technics 1200 tuned up - so im just going back and listening and the enjoying the records i have - a lot of 12 inches singles which are hard to find and i will let go the ones that i don't listen too anymore - ill do trades - to get some new records that I want.....oh yeah "The Purge" lol
I have been giving the records I just don't seem to resonate with or heard too many times to a 20 year old at work who loves Led Zeppelin and all the other classics. Gave him Doors Greatest Hits, Led Zeppelin Physical Grafitti and Song Remains the Same (actually old presses gifted to me many years ago in beautiful condition); I still have 2, 3 and Led Zeppelin 4. Those are more memorable for me, gave him Jimi He drives Smash Hits (first got a copy in the late 70s when my mom or grandma bought it for me. I now have Are You Experienced which I never owned growing up. Gifted him Van Halen 1984, not really ever a fan of that one. Only bought it because my late online buddy Noel Monks (their manager at the times) name was on it. And gave him Ramones Rocket to Russia because everyone should know the Ramones. Gave my older friend at work STP Core on that beautiful spatter disc, Tom Petty Greatest Hits, ACDC Back In Black and Weezer's first album, which I just couldn't get into. Oh yeah also gave the young dude Pink Floyd Animals (another old press Gifted to me in minty condition and Black Sabbath. I can't remember the title but it's got the Sweet Leaf song on it and the kid loves it. He actually quit recently but he sent me a recording of him playing his guitar and he sounds like Hendrix and Jimmy Page's lovechild. He is a natural. Already taken it to the stage at the local rock club. So my point? You never know who your giving records you just don't jam anymore, too. And you can always buy another copy later if you miss any of them. If nothing else, it's a nice gesture and it's something I find, young folks especially, will remember my old nearly 50 yo ass by. I use to make mix cds for my friends 8 year old son in the late 90s and early 2000s. He still talks about all the old punk jams I use to burn into them.
I have too many vinyl and turntables! Ended up selling 2 tables out of 7. I’m also selling some vinyl and using that money to buy my grail list records so it’s kinda downsizing 😂
Only duplicates are sold nowadays. Big purge in college for gain space and spending money. Wish I had all that classic and southern rock now however. Buy a bigger house!
I own 20 thousand vinyl and 3thousand 7inchers. I've been collecting forever ( even during the vinyl-hating 90s lol). I'm out of room, and don't care to expand anymore. Now, every new vinyl, means one has to go. In the 90s, most vinyl was free or a dollar. I would get Bauhaus, Smiths, Miles Davis 6eye all a buck apiece, but tons of garbage too. I'm slowly getting rid of musicals and Streisand, that I got for free. I don't know what to do after that. They are also still releasing those 90s/ early 2000s albums, that were never available on vinyl ( dave matthews some devil, comes out shortly for example). I'm gonna be out of ideas to justify my obsession lol
Oh wow, lol. That’s one impressive collection. With a collection of that size, if you sold or donated a few, do you think you would miss them? Or would it be “out of sight, out of mind?”
Would never collect a lot of vinyl because it’s expensive and where I live there’s high humidity, there’s no chance to own a lot. Less that 150. Some tapes and couple hundred of cd. Cd will last a long time. And own a lot of digital file. Save space and more convenient.
Yup, humidity and carboard record jackets don't go well together. Especially those thick gatefold double albums. And if you keep them in plastic sleeves it seems like they get even more mildew on them. I gotta move to a semi-arid climate someday.
Expensive to keep it up. Not only the price on new or used vinyl are high, accessories to upkeep those vinyl in great condition cost much more. Even if you don’t buy any expensive record cleaner or any vinyl accessory that are expensive despite there’s cheaper, it’s still cost money. Need to apply grateful for little thing you have in my case.
You could get rid of that Tom Jones, Platters, and Carpenters but they ain't worth much. You need to keep 95% or else you risk losing out on memories. If you remember it fondly, don't get rid of it. If you hate it on first play and never then really appeals, sure. Get rid of it as in the case of avant-garde or free jazz many will appreciate it and those tend to be limited.
I see by the short display of your record selection that there seems to be a great lack of diversity. The sample shown tends to show a lack of inclusion when it comes to the colour of the artists and their style of music. Now I am not one to cast disparaging remarks on a persons taste or listening pleasures but you went on to say your collection includes various genres and styles. As a person with a far lighter tone of skin, I have always explored multiple and varied styles and genres with a blind eye to the artists colour or background. I guess it’s a thing perhaps not suited for everyone. Your example of predominantly (actually exclusively) black American artists may just have me incorrect in my observation.
Why in the hell would you wanna get rid of your physically owned music!? If your phone or pc with your music files brakes you lose your whole collection and might not even remember what music you had on there. Also the library of hi res files on the internet is very small, and the files are rips of physical media to begin with, unless its a digitally released track. The guy who rips the songs might not have the best stuff. Better off just buy the record to being with! You buy records because you want to own music phyicially and get the best sound quality. Cd's is the inferior format and you could just buy hi res wave files or dsd files. No reason to buy cd's to own music when vinyl records are so much bigger and have better artwork. However cds is great if you wanna listen to music in a car that dosen't have bluetooth.

I did recently THE PURGE of 4 records I wasn’t crazy about and I traded them in for 2 CD’s.
This is so try. Gotta purge! Life is too short to have these on your shelf that have dead weight. Keep the best of the best!
The Purge. This really spoke to me. Thank you for this. I have been donating a lot of records to the charity shops on a weekly basis and very happy for these albums to have a new home for someone else to enjoy.

I don't have enough to purge. I'm not going to purchase enough to have to clear out space. I have an end game, sort to speak.
I have too many vinyl and turntables! Ended up selling 2 tables out of 7. I’m also selling some vinyl and using that money to buy my grail list records so it’s kinda downsizing 😂
😂 nice! Gotta do whatever works for you!
The Purge 💀 ( love the whole series)
Nice 😂
I'm selling on ebay. I'm not selling anything I'm real attached to, but I'm selling more than I thought I would. Might as well cash in while I can
Only hipsters purging his collection, real collectors never stop to buy records since 70s, 80s and even 90s!
Donate Them...Dont Waste Them...
Would never collect a lot of vinyl because it’s expensive and where I live there’s high humidity, there’s no chance to own a lot. Less that 150.
Some tapes and couple hundred of cd. Cd will last a long time. And own a lot of digital file. Save space and more convenient.
That makes sense, especially about the weather.
Yeah dude I've got all sorts as well, loved Motown, disco, rnb and I'm a rock and metal guy,I did see he has tom jone and Gorillaz though
Yes purge the lot for CDs 😆👍
Purging is healthy. People also run out of space. And you can almost always buy something back you sold at a fairly reasonable price if you want.
