Hi David, I would advise anyone starting out in music production to look at the free Native set. I started with this and BBC Discover with the free Cubase trial. Upgraded to Artist after the trial ended, now using Cubase13pro, NI Ultimate and BBC Core. I have the Yamaha 5” monitors like yours, they’re fab. My Keyboard controller is the ARTURIA KEYLAB MKII 61, which provides great controllers, transport functions and has a stunning keyboard touch/feel. It also has a vast amount of great synths free when you create an account.
Great video and love the bed music you’ve created! Have a great day! Paul

Just found this video so thanks for the info, I have been producing for 15 years and enjoyed the alternative views on the tools needed! I agree 100% on the Spitfire AlbionOne but was surprised that StudioOne DAW was not mentioned as it is one of the most intuitive of all especially for beginners!

Glad this was useful, and sorry for not mentioning StudioOne, I'm afraid I don't know the first thing about it, my bad. Happy music-making!

You're welcome! Of course gear and computers are always changing so I may update this video in the future. Happy composing!

My biggest thing right now is getting a good desk. Either too expensive or rubbish cheap. Might end up getting one made 🤷🏻‍♂️

Soooo important! I made mine and I'm pretty happy with it - it's not that difficult if you have some tools, but it does take a couple of days. Then you're set up for ages so it's worth the trouble IMO. I recently upgraded my pull-out keyboard drawer thingy, I should probably make a video about it. Thanks for liking!

Hi David, thanks for a very informative video. As a beginner, would 256 gb internal SSD be enough (with an external SSD of 1 TB)? I'm considering getting a Mac mini to start out (M2, 16 gb, 256 gb) and use it with Logic and composercloud+ by eastwest. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi and thanks for asking. I think you're fine with storage, you can always upgrade your external SSD drive later if needs be. 16G of RAM is OK to get started, but I'm afraid you might outgrow it pretty quickly - even on an M2. With 16G you can probably build a template with about 100 tracks (make sure they are disabled in Logic!). I don't use composercloud but from what I gather it's probably useful that you can just download what you need as you go along. If you possibly can try to stretch to 32G Ram IMHO, it will future proof you a bit better. Just running the latest software and OS takes up more and more computer juice 😜 Having said that, if you are really just starting out, you could go for that configuration, feel how things go creatively and professionally for you, and upgrade later - a mac studio will always be easy to sell and they don't depreciate too quickly. Hope that helps, good luck!

@@davidchiversmusic Thanks a lot David! I've been thinking and googling for a while and now also realized that I should go for 32 gb... Macs are fairly expensive with 32 gb though so I'm thinking of a refurbished mac mini late 2018 as I'm only going to use it for composing basically. However, it says "32 gb ram DDR4", would DDR work? And can I run it with an external ssd? Thanks a lot again!

So all in all, a good setup will cost about 10000 euros? 🙈
