  • In this interview Rev. Heng Sure speaks about his the various "Dhamma Doors" that led him more deeply into the practice, from meeting his teacher, Master Hua, to taking an 800-mile pilgrimage doing full-length prostrations every three steps. His reflections on what sustains a life of practice represent a precious gift.
Reverend Heng Sure is an American Chan Buddhist monk and senior disciple of Master Hsuan Hua currently spending half his time serving as director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and half on retreat in Queensland, Australia.
After receiving his masters in Oriental languages from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976, he met his teacher, Master Hua, and took ordination soon thereafter being given the Dharma name "Heng Sure" - meaning "Constantly Real."
He is perhaps best known for the peace-seeking, two and a half year, 800 mile, “three steps, one bow pilgrimage” he and his companion Heng Chau (Martin Verhoeven) made from South Pasadena to the City of 10,000 Buddhas in Ukiah, California in 1977-79 - an account of which is featured in the books “With one heart, bowing to the City of 10,000 Buddhas,” and “Highway Dharma Letters.”
After serving as Interpreter for Master Hua for many years, briefly acting as abbot of the City of 10,000 Buddhas, and translating many Sutra texts into English, in 2003, Rev. Heng Sure completed his PhD in Religion from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley.
