Perharps, suicide is not as usual on a tropical paradise. Patients, however, can always rely on thousands of private psychologists offices, call/visit mental hospitals directly, contact religious leaders, or talk to relatives. Actually, it is more disturbing the fact that there are suicidal Puerto Ricans unable to make phone calls due to the lack of power or telecommunications. But I highly doubt they are “millions”. According to the Forensic Sciences Institute of Puerto Rico, 188 out of 3.4 million Puerto Ricans committed suicide in 2016.
The infrastructure of the call center represent what you can afford when you are the oldest colony in the world, and is rather inadequate to criticize that at this moment.
The government doesn't hire more people, because they do want to pay,less money to rob,if they hired a lot of professionals to attend this service. I

I had to go through Maria my family was without electricity for months we would run out of water and food. I had to go to school without electricity and water for months. The lines where kilometric for the supermarket, Gasoline for so many things that are necessities. We felt alone like there was nobody. I felt like I was trapped and it wasn’t going to end. I didn’t know if my classmates were alive or even in the island anymore. We felt ignored from the rest of the world. Maria gave a perspective in life that will forever be with me. People don’t know how privileged they are until it’s ripped away.
Bless you and your family. Will pray for you and the rest of the people in life changing crises

I was planning on killing myself, I rode my bike about 5 miles away from my neighborhood to a city with large buildings I was planning on jumping off of. The buildings were too crowded and I went home. I saw this in my recommended and the thing the first lady said made me bawl for hours. It really made me contemplate everything and it really helped.

Thank you for raising awareness with this documentary. I'm currently in Puerto Rico and this is exactly what's going on. Everyone's is losing hope and the level of anxiety has been through the roof. Everyone you talk to has gone to emergancy for one thing or another due to the massive amount of stress that's eating away on a daily bases. The majority of the people are still without light and with time you come to realize how much of daily routines from work to living is dependent on daily consumption of energy. The US is going to have to embrace the large amount of people exiting towards the mainland. Everyone I know has left or is leaving.

I'm Puerto Rican. I currently live here. My parents still don't have a job. I missed a lot of days in school. And when we got back to school, I would leave at 12pm because we didn't have some teachers. It was like that until the last day of school. Every Puerto Rican had thoughts like this. It was not easy to get gas for the power plant. Super market lines were really long , and by the time we got in side everything was gone. There's still people on this day that still doesn't have power. And don't forget the fact that thousands of people died because of the hurricane and lack of power in the hospitals. Some people needed the power to stay alive. But the news only reported a few people dead.

The whole city was without power, gas, food or water for three days in Florida, and I've never experienced such hopelessness. Felt like a ghost town. It's one thing when your home or your neighborhood is affected, another when it's the whole city. It's scary and I can't imagine what these people feel after months this way.

The difficulty of working at a job like this is that to do your job effectively, you have to really sympathize with the caller or you come off as disingenuous. However, you can't get too involved because it'll wear you down as well.

I know I talked to one of them and they weren't sympathetic and it really just made me want to end it more you really have to be empathetic have empathy that's what I meant she just said things like oh I'm sorry for you or that's bad that sucks like okay everyone else tells me that why can't you just tell me it's going to be okay that it's okay to make mistakes like Damm say that'll get better even if it's a lie

I remember I once dealt with a friend who was considering suicide. We had a deep conversation. All those heart attacks every time they said they wanted to die, the scrambling to try to find the correct words so they didn’t bury themselves more into their hole and trying to make them smile. Having that as a daily job, I could never.
I really want to do this job when I'm older. I had a friend before he passed who would always look to me as a person to talk to with his depression. He would tell me I was an amazing listener and every time he talked to me his troubles would melt away and said my voice was very soothing. I hope he's looking at me and supporting me in heaven. I don't know how to get this job all I know is I was put on this earth to do it.

It’s so upsetting seeing people who don’t have anyway of getting help, and it’s everywhere. We need to take care of each other and help one another instead of separating ourselves from issues just because they aren’t directly affecting us.

Just imagine going to a gas station and having to make a 6 hour line just to get 5 gallons of gas
I called a suicide number a couple weeks ago because I was really wanting to end the pain, but I finally called. I was so proud of myself for reaching for help. I’m still going through the pain but a little bit not as worse as it use to be. I’m still proud of myself for calling!

I live in Puerto Rico and I can still remember how hard it was to cope with the pain of losing someone you care about because of the hurricane it was really difficult for me I lost my house I lost everything, I was always thinking of suicide and how I could be free from the pain and guilt. I just hope that none of you have to go thru the same pain.❤
I would come home so stressed everyday if i had this job. I'm too emotional, the moment i see someone crying, i cry. I would wanna do so much and i cant. Kudos to them and may God give them strength

My aunt in law commited sucide a year ago and my heart goes out to people who are suicidal, and i want you to know that you are loved you are wanted and you are WORTHY! Your life is so important to so many people and you might not realize it but the impact that you leave leaves a mark in people all around you in your life! So please before you do it ask yourself, is this really what i want?

We live in one of the richest countries in the world. Therefore why do we let the top 2% take all of the wealth when these people clearly need it more.

I got the info from the United States Census Bureau. A government funded organization that takes massive surveys of American households each year. You can see income statistics on their website. They've also put it into graph form to show how the top percentage of Americans have been gaining more wealth each year while the smaller income level households get very little, if any, growth in wealth at all.
Rose Singer It’s 5% that own over half of the wealth in the world, not America. Still, it’s absolutely shocking. However, I do agree no ones wages should be that high and should be distributed a little more equally to other jobs. I’m not talking socialism, but job wage equality.

It was a pretty depressing year to be honest, thank God where I live I was with out electricity for like half of month and and 2 weeks with out water.
The electricity came the same day that Thanksgiving was, it was actually surprising.
But I have friends that unfortunately they didn't get electricity for like a whole year and the only thing I could do is just pray for them
But I never lose faith and keep on going

These wonderful people probably have no idea how amazing and comforting their words feel to someone who needs help, hearing someone say that they care and you’re important is the most comforting thing to me.
They're not just words to comfort, it's hard truth. You ARE important, no matter how much you could hate yourself, there will always be people like me who love you for your mistakes, accept them and see what you are inside, what you want to be, and who you will be.

Those people who are working in this center are beautiful. They gave me hope. I cried
I’ve struggled with mental health issues since I was around 11, it’s been an uphill battle with myself. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I give EVERYTHING I HAVE to help my island. Fuerza mi gente, la lucha es larga pero somos fuertes como roble.
As a Puertorican I say... every time the power goes out while in a virtual class, we panic. The sound of the wind scares my family. When an alarm sounds I get anxious. So, we are still affected by what happened.
i went to a national suicide hotline place and i had to listen to all of the words they said.. it had hurt me. One of them said “I’m tired of it all and I just want to end it but I just don’t want to, I’m only 12!!” and that just sent me

as a puerto rican, being part of this devastating tragedy, it was terrible. and the previous government we had, Ricardo Roselló, kept resources to himself. He didn't do anything. It was all so stressful.

i know that i’ll probably never commit suicide due to being fairly calm through my struggles, but now i know that i can actually look for help if i ever get that far
*The quality of life there isn't the best, however, as the lady that is working at the suicidal prevention center said, material stuff aren't the most important thing, since with time you can slowly recover, but you can't get your life back once it's gone.*
(La calidad de vida allá no es la mejor. Sin embargo, como dijo la señora que trabaja en el centro de prevención, lo material no es lo más importante, ya que con el tiempo te puedes recuperar, pero no puedes tener tu vida de vuelta después de que se haya ido).
*Recently, a storm passed through my country, and my house got flooded, thus many things were damaged, including almost all the furniture, clothing, etc.. Nevertheless, me and my family know that we can overcome this devastating situation.*
(Hace poco (ayer ;_;), una tormenta pasó por mi país, y mi casa se inundó. Así, muchas cosas se dañaron, incluyendo casi todos los muebles, ropa, etc.. Sin embargo, mi familia y yo sabemos que podemos superar esta situación tan terrible).
*I'm glad to know that they focus on such a significant task, at least there are people willing to help others with these kind of thoughts, unlike here, where I live.*
(Me alegra saber que se enfocan en esta tarea tan importante, que por lo menos hay gente que están dispuestas a ayudar a otros con este tipo de pensamiento).
*So if you ever get negative thoughs, remember that there is a lot of good moments and things to come yet, and that hard times will fade away. One's life is very valuable, so don't waste it and take care of it.* (Así que si alguna vez te llegan pensamientos negativos, recuerda que lo bueno está por llegar, y que lo malo va a desaparecer. La vida de uno es muy valiosa, así que no la desperdicies y cuídala).
loosing everything amd everybody you love will take a toll on the strongest person
I admire these kind people. They are on the front lines of a mental war. An internal war inside everyone, every single one of them absorbing every war at once. I wish I could be there to thank them personally for what they do. They're gonna need help sometimes too
These people must go through so much answering these calls, they all have to have counseling too for the things they have heard. Bless Puerto Rico
If I worked there, I would end every call with “I love you”

i started tearing up within the first 30 seconds - i can’t even begin to imagine how challenging this job must be. the responders are heroes. i hope they know that.
I'm balling my eyes out. It's so hard when you go through depression and I never had anyone to help me. But a counselor and even that barely helped. I always wanted to be alone and I just stayed in my room all day. I would cut my arms and pick at the scabs. It really isn't a joke. Suicide is a serious thing. I'm so glad there is suicide hot lines. God bless these people
Im from pr, and part of my family came here. Who disliked the video, im ashamed a humancan even do that.Im doing a project on suicide awareness and prevention. Anyone who is having thos thoughts..... There is still hope

I was a crisis response worker and crisis intervention coordinator at a small town of 7500 before, the mental and emotional stress that comes with the job is very draining, I’m surprised I lasted 6 years on the job before moving on, I always thought it would be a 9 to 5 job with a few OT here and there but I definitely thought wrong, there would be times I would work OT 10 shifts straight and I would only have 1-2 days off, the town has a very high-rate of suicide attempts and suicides because of how isolated the community is, I decided to accept a job offer as a Assistant Administrator for a nonprofit charity organization where I work very closely with low-income families, children, and youth, I love my job there and I think I would rather work there for the rest of my social work career.
This honestly breaks my heart. There literally could be someone in the next building suffering from depression. Always be kind to people, you don't know what you can say unintentionally which will be the last straw for them.
Man these people are so amazing and strong I can’t imagine how hard it is to have this job
