Israel's Problem with Russia in Syria....

- Why is Israel in a position where they are kind of forced to play nice with Russia, and how is Putin’s new relationship with Tehran driving Israel away? The war in Ukraine has clearly put new stress on this strange relationship.

But something major has changed the relationship with Russia and Israel in an unexpected way. The Abraham accords announced in August 2020 completely rewrote the security relationships in the middle east. It was passed under US President Trump the Abraham accords was an effort to “encourage efforts to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue to advance a culture of peace among the three Abrahamic religions and all humanity.” The deal received bipartisan support in America and led to new forms of cooperation between two of the states that signed on Israel and the United Araba Emirates. but other muslim countries also improved relations with Israel like Azerbaijan and Sudan.
Why is that? According to Israel's Ministry of Defense, the value of Israeli defense exports to countries with which it normalized relations in 2020 reached $791 million. Nothing gets rid of thousands of years of fighting like getting together and trading weapons. In fact between 2016-2020, Israel arms imports to Azerbaijan made up about 70 percent of their major weapon imports - and about 17 percent of Israel's arms exports. Add on Bahrain, Morocco, and Eygpt all normalizing relations with Israel and you’ve got a real coombya moment worthy of your aunts coexist bumper sticker. There’s a new Israeli-Arab-US security order in the middle east aimed against Iran. Common enemy, check, weapons deals check, common favorite spread check.

Its important to note that the term "Russian" Jew as used in Israel, the US, and Germany doesn't always mean actual Russian Jews. Ukrainian Jews, Azeri Jews, Moldovan Jews, Belarussian Jews, Uzbek Jews, etc are all lumped into the category of Russian Jews. Zelenesky's family is an example of this. He is from a Jewish family and his parents live in Israel. Most Ukrainian Jews didn't speak Ukrainian so ironically the parents of the President of Ukraine were probably counted in that "Russian" Jewish statistic that you quoted.
The reason for this is most Jews in the Russian Empire spoke Yiddish. When Yiddish started going out of favor most Jews learned Russian and sometimes learned the local language of the land they were staying in. In Ukraine this never really happened because Russian was so widespread even among Ukrainian locals. Thats why many Jews who are from Ukraine and live around the world actually consider themselves Russian Jews.
Its also important to note that just because Russian Jews have a connection to Russia that doesn't mean they feel the same warm fuzzy feelings about Russia as some other non Jewish Russians feel. It was a struggle for Jews to leave the Soviet Union and Jews had many of their rights suppressed. While the Russian Jews of today are a lot more integrated into Russian culture then their religious Yiddish speaking ancestors a lot of them will stay say they felt as if they were "alien" up until the moment they left.
The modern Russian Jewish identity is extremely complex. Entire books, studies, and essays have been written about that topic. They are a group that has been influenced by rapidly changing from being distinctly Jewish to being more Russian, being influenced by the culture in the USSR which no longer exists, and being influenced by becoming large diasporas in Israel, Germany, and the US. Sadly the unique circumstances that created them no longer exist. So its unlikely this identity will survive this century. Russian Jews are really a great case study for comparing how nationality, ethnicity, and religion influence hoe we identify ourselves.
Here in Argentina the shear amount of Russian Jew inmigrants was such that still today Jews are refered to as "Rusos". Even inside the Jewish collective they jokingly divide between Rusos and Turcos depending if their roots. (In Argentina all those with Middle Eastern origins, whatever country, ethnicity, religion or else are referred as Turks anyway... I believe because they originally came from the Ottoman Empire, as did others from the Russian...)
@@ronmaximilian6953 You are correct, I tried to simplify things to not make the comment too long. It is important to note that although these communities were very culturally rich and diverse they were tiny compared to the huge Yiddish speaking population in the Pale of Settlement. From a historical perspective they didn't really have as much of an impact on Rusian history as the Psle of Settlement Jews had.
if israel can attack Palestine. and the united states can attack iraq. then why is it only Russia that gets economic sanctions
Well to be fair “Russian Jew” just refers ti nationality. It doesn’t really mean anything and that is why it is usually applied to any Jew from the former Russian empire. All eastern Jews whether they’re from Russia, Poland, Moldova, etc. are the same race (Ashkenazi). They’re not related to ethnic Russians/Eastern Europeans either.
They are the lost tribes of Israel and forever be lost.

Sign of the times. Certain groups (BRICS nations) are being quite deliberate in trying to start a world war, because they like their odds and what it means to their economies, thus solidifying regime control.
They smell weakness in the UN and the citizenry of the 2023 world. Just like in the 1930's, they're dreaming that 'decadent people' today won't mobilize as they did then. Are they right?

It's really crazy how everybody feels the need to be extremely sensitive about criticizing or saying anything bad about Israel even if it's completely valid, justified, objective and based on clear ethical values. It seems like people are truly afraid to say anything wrong. Why is that?!?
@Kenny-yl9pc because millions of Js died in the holocaust and others still say it didn't happen. Isreal represents democracy, civility and shared common values, where Palestine represents unorganized uneducated religious extremists, government oppression, tyranny, and aggression. Isreal is depicted in the west as just trying to defend itself and it's land from dark savages trying to take their land. Some are stereotypical views and some stereotypes are based in reality. Both sides are killing civilians and at fault, and lately the US has had lots of issues with Isreal latest actions. While the US doesn't like what's going on, it will take more than that to abandon its strategic partnership with Isreal. Hence the reason why the west doesn't receive all the news of what's going on there, but it wouldn't change that much only popular opinion if we got all the news. The whole conflict is too deep of a rabbit hole for Americans to want to look into. We choose the blue pill for this one and to just listen to one side of the conflict. Too much other stuff going on right now.

I just want to add, as a somewhat knowledgeable Russian Israeli, that a big portion of what is called here as "Russian" Jewd are actually from ex-Soviet Union and not from Russia. Really big representation of Ukrainians, Georgians, Armenians, Belarussians, Moldovan, etc are here. And even the "proper" Russians mostly support Ukraine in the conflict. Personally, I always criticized the government for not doing enough to help Ukraine.
Also, I wanted to add that the problem doesn't just end with Syria. Attacks are not likely to come from Syrian soil. Assad is not as crazy as Nasrallah. Lebanese Hizballah will not blink twice before sacrificing everyone who lives in Southern Lebanon just to kill few Israeli soldiers.
During the Syrian Civil War, Lebanese Hizballah militia were very helpful for Assad so he kind of owes them.
Also, add Hamas to the mix and it, indeed, becomes one heck of an international political clusterf***.
Still, people in Ukraine are dying RIGHT NOW so I don't believe Israel has the luxury to play with "maybes" here, we should be firm and we should not fear when helping other weaker nations which are bullied by bigger adversaries.
I commend you for your bravery in tackling progressively more difficult subjects. Who are bound to annoy people. Good work!
Good work. Thorough, revealing.

Great summary! One small point though at 1:12, Israel lumps most USSR immigrants under "Russian" or "Russian speaking", including Ukrainians and even Georgians sometimes. So the percentage of ethnic Russians is much lower in reallity, and even then you'd be hard pressed to call most of them pro-Russia.

Wow, as an American Jew with family in Israel, I’m impressed with how on the spot your analysis was. You got all the points right and nothing missed, it’s a hard issue. My only comment is that Israel supports Ukraine behind the scenes more then is publicly shown. They have been giving assistance non military and behind the scenes advising on effective defense against Iran’s drones as well as possibly lending some anti drone equipment. You are also correct in noting the change in policy, I think we can expect to see a lot more Israeli military assistance soon. Also, Israeli concerns over the treatment of Jews in Russia, historically Jews have been persecuted in Russia for centuries and up until recently Jews were restricted from emigrating from Russia and couldn’t openly practice religion. Obviously that improved after the fall of communism, but with baby hitler in Moscow, Israel has been concerned Putin might retaliate by limiting Russian Jews ability to leave Russia. Israel is unusual in that it has a dual obligation to make decisions to protect its national interests but also has had a mandate since it’s creation to protect and ensure safe haven for our diaspora, one of the largest being in Russia. Thanks for doing a very balanced and informed piece, I’m a big fan

My whole family is from the USSR, I was the first one to be born in Israel. We are lumped together as Russians even though my mom is Azerbaijani and half of my dad's family is Ukrainian, whilst small parts lived in Belarus.
The only Israelis who support Russia are those who receive a pension from Russia. Even then, people like my grandparents are critical of the war and their loyalty is to Israel first and foremost. What Ukraine is going through right now, is similar to what Israel went through in the 1948,1967 and 1973. If Ukraine put down their weapons, just like if Israel had done so, these 2 countries wouldn't exist. Russian propaganda just like anti-Israel propaganda, is riddled with holes, lies and is based on holding Israel and Ukraine to standards that Russians and the Arabs don't hold themselves to.
The largest Russian speaking news channel in Israel has taken a very pro-Ukraine position so that's also very good. The issue some Israelis have with supporting Ukraine is that Ukraine has always voted against Israel in the UN and has disappointed many Israelis and Ukrainians alike but Russia has always voted against us too so that points bothers me less. Israel simply needs Putin's permission to conduct air strikes on Iranian proxies in Syria who are funding Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah. It's a very frustrating situation but I hope we can support Ukraine indirectly via Iran. Israel has also provided tremendous humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Nthe situation is complex but Israel just like Ukraine, must do whatever is needed to ensure its survival.
This gentleman doesn't even know that islamic jihadist were killing Muslims and the Hezbollah fought against them.
Iran supports Hezbollah with hardware and all.....and only supports hamas political thought and not through hardware.

As a Brit with a very long term affinity for Israel's right to exist and very aware how offten hostile forces have challenged that in the past, I am, nontheless, very perturbed & increasingly inclined to think Israel is selling-out its own long term international support by Netanyahu's de facto approval of the appalling violence Israeli settlers are currently inflicting upon West Bank Palastinians.
So I am genuinely curious Harel to discover what the majority of ordinary Israelis make of what's happening.
In fact - Do they even access the international coverage of what's happening on the West Bank or just accept a 'spun' version of news?
My concern here is both for the West Bank Palastinians - sure they can be violent - but nothing yet on the scale of Hezbollah in the west & Syria AND for Israel.
Do Ordinary Israeli's think 'sod the Palestinains on the West Bank - Its our land & we should kick them off it?
Or are they concerned they will further radicalise them whilst erroding the world's view of Israel as generally a fairly decent, fairly Western nation?
It seems quite tragic that a people who have once known terrible oppression are almost allowing their most right wing groups to inflict that on others. Or is that not how most Israelis see it?
Is peace even a prospect?

And that's is my point. As I watch YT channels, or observe anything else for that matter, I automatically focus on the whole picture. The set-up, the way the story is build up, the way in which the value of the content can be measured. The balance of the whole and the knowledge, etcetera says a lot about the people behind it, Way more then most people recon. It says something about you innate character, logic reasoning, how you observe the world around you and how you see yourself from your place in this! I can only see a stable, even balanced, structure which is thought through and a mindset that is evenly balanced. That mindset is a crucial one, because it is showing you are always dedicated to the social interest, where in is also place for your and other peoples self-interest to flourish! It maybe sounds very strange in regard to the topic, but it is actually the base that makes sane, logic and the feeling of doing your bit in order to protect the good from evil! Maybe if you do not understand (also for the reader!) see it as "The Butterfly Effect". Something seemingly insignificant, happens somewhere, and is seemingly unrelated, to that what it effects later. But then, unconsciously, from a basic core belief to an integral part of that what protects society from falling into chaos! Well analyzed; I hadn’t considered how Israel’s relationship with Azerbaijan might upset Russia, given its support for both Iran and Armenia. Although, Armenians themselves don’t seem to return Putin’s feelings-they’ve been feeling rather abandoned by Russia of late over the issue of Nagorno-Kharabakh.
The Armenian prime minister Pashinian tried distancing Armenia from Russia by trying to get close to the west ,this is why Russia didnt support Armenia all that much ,although they have some peace keeping troops there ,if it wasn’t for them Azerbaijan would have invaded Armenian mainland by now, on the other hand Turkey is also involved in the karabakh war ,Russia is trying to keep good relations with Turkey ,Putin has a gas project that would turn Turkey into a gas hub in which Europe will depend on in the future ,Russia most likely would rather Iran to deal with Azerbaijan and Iran is trying to avoid conflict with Azerbaijan because once conflict begins Azerbaijan will turn into Iran’s “Ukraine” if you know what i mean.there are deep historical, cultural and religious ties between Iran and Azerbaijan in fact Azerbaijan used to be part of Iran until 160 years ago until they lost it to the Russian Empire during Russo-Persian wars ,so you see how the situation is so complex in that little region of the world?

People get confused when they see Christian Armenians waving Iranian flags in support of Islamic Iran.
But it makes perfect sense when you understand the geopolitical issues in the region.
Armenia with an internal population of less than 3 mln ppl locked between Russia, Iran, and an alliance of Turkey, and Azerbaijan. If they would try to live without any protectorate - the country will disappear.
Russian strategy with former Soviet countries is making them dependent on Moskow ( same with internal Russian regions ) that's why in these countries dictatorship regimes are supported by Russia. Any attempt of obtaining independence will cause bitter consequences. That's why I suppose Russia didn't help Armenia in the last Armenian - Azerbaijan war. Moreover, I suspect this conflict was approved by the Russian authority. How come, that Tiny Azerbaijan started the war supported by a NATO member (Turkey) against a member of CSTO ( NATO analog) and nobody responded? Come on...Two years before, in Armenia, there was a revolution and a new president truly appointed by the nation started lustrations against the former corrupted government and I believe some of them were GRU(KGB) agents that successfully held this country for 30 years dependent on Russia.
Ukraine - kicked off their dictator and get rid of Russia, so consequently, they got the conflict at first and full-scale invasion at last. They were a bad example for others - you can't get rid of Russia without any consequences. If one succeeds, the others will try the same. Btw during protests in Belarus in 2020 ppl often mentioned Armenia as a good example of a peaceful revolution. So....draw conclusions on your own.

Love it, keep marching forward.
That was amazing !!!!
Blown away by effort to untangle this complex topic. Great job Cappy 👏👏👏
A surprising summary of the geopolitical forces at play in this theatre of hostilities. Enjoyed the in-depth research. Kudos
"I have a public school education so I don't know what I am talking about" I love it. Very truthful in today's world.
Good and honest analysis
Great job on tiptoeing through a minefield to bring us a great overview of a complex topic. Thanks!
I appreciate how the biases of the channel were clearly laid out- true objectively in journalism is not a complete freedom from bias- which does not exist. It is, rather a willingness to be clear and open about the potential biases that may exist, and I applaud this channel for recognizing and declaring such.
Cheers.
Great content!
It's sad we basically ignored the Russian invasion of Georgia. I think that set another precedent for Putin to invade Ukraine.
No. The Us/Eu/Nato using Georgia and Ukraine for launching pads to attack Russia is the Reason for Russian intervention in Ukraine and Georgia.
The number of Russian speakers in Israel and support for Russia is entirely unrelated. Most Russian speaker Israelis came from Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and other former USSR republics. As a Russian speaking Israeli from Belarus, I can estimate that 90% of Russian speakers in Israel are Ukraine supporters.
True!
Then why doesn’t your country ever vote against Russia in the UN?
@@jillfeatherman5523 for the same reason Ukraine votes against Israel in the U.N., and then begs Israel for money and weapons.

Hey Chris, I have to give you a thumbs up for having the courage to take on this topic, doing a correct analysis of the situation and not being afraid of speaking your mind and position on it. Good job!
Now I challenge you to read Ezequiel 38 & 39, if you want to know how will this looming conflict end. God Bless.
Best expose great analysis!
correct assessment 👏
As an Israeli, I've watched others get completely out of their depth in this complicated mess! You did very well in breaking it all down in a very understandable way. Well done!
Iran wants you dead. Iran helping Russia so Russia helping them enrich nukes with technical experts.
The writing is on the wall. Russia will help Iran get more powerful to defeat you all.

if israel can attack Palestine. and the united states can attack iraq. then why is it only Russia that gets economic sanctions
@@remogatron1010 if israel can attack Palestine. and the united states can attack iraq. then why is it only Russia that gets economic sanctions. The world should also unite when the United States attacked Iraq. basic western hypocrisy.
Israelis act like they aren't actively genociding Palestinians lmao
As a Russian born Israeil Jew, I commend your in depth analysis and understanding of such a complicated situation.
Thank you.
Also, let's hope for the quick demise of putin's regime and victory to Ukraine.

Good work!
Well done cappy for wading through that, like how you said you only had a public school education ….here in England that mean private school,I know it makes no sense
Good work! Quality context and macrodepictions

Good job Cappy.

How did everything get so complicated? Thanks for making it as understandable as might be possible.

Nice analysis. Thank you.
You've done a really great job of explaining very complex geopolitics (the geography alone is so complicated), congratulations! You've also come a long way since I began following your channel at the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Two criticisms: first, you said at 3:20 you were going to "put your cards out on the table and let you know my bias", but you never actually stated what your bias was. Second, I still wish you would learn to pronounce "Ukraine" properly and respectfully, and not say YOO-kraine like so many Americans do! This may seem like a little thing but not given all the death and destruction the country is suffering now. Thanks and keep up the amazing work!
I believe that what he meant by his biases was that he has a pro-Israel bias because it serves American interests (and I highly respect that he put it out there on the table)
Second, I really don't think that someone being bombed is too bothered by mispronounciation. He also mispronounced some Israeli terms (like Ariel Sharon's name), but you can't expect foreigners to know how to pronounce every name. Plus, he "mispronounces" Russia as most English speakers do by saying Ra-sha and not Ra-ssi-ya, but it's also how the entire Western world calls them.
Problem with helping with system like Iron Dome is that it would very likely get into hands of Russia /Iran. It could be easily exploited. Sending defense weapon like this would very likely make it useless in future.
Cappy, I'm loving your content, as always! And you are putting it out more often 😉
Maybe do a rundown of Kaliningrad?!
Spot on! National security is top priority here and many don't understand the delicate explosive situation here. We are trying to be friends with everyone but at same time can't be real friends with no one because the same reason. Eventually everyone condemms Israel at these UN meetings but still gladly will buy our weapons. We got many issues here such as far right and orthodox who became very strong mainly due to constant threats and attacks of islamistic groups. Its all very complicated here but you did an excellent job sorting the most of it! Good job!
Nothing wrong with those groups. If there is a threat then there should be a response.
Following Brexit, many people in the UK have finally woken up to the realisation that our prosperity & strength are not guaranteed, but are instead contingent on good trade relationships. Historical ties mean little in realpolitik. You guys do what you have to do. Respect.
Great analysis.

Great views and information on an extremely complex region. I’m a “libertarian “, and I detest the US entanglements in European wars and then the following Cold War and now the PRC situation. In the meantime, the US domestic situation is seriously deteriorating . What a mess.
I am a libertarian and I don’t agree with you. Our domestic situation sucks, but it’s pretty constant, certainly not nearly as bad as Europe, and orders of magnitude better than the basket case called China.
The only threat China poses is if before it collapses it tries to start a war out of desperation or internal political calculations.
