Amazing sensitivity and selectivity for the cost. I have found a new sweetheart of a radio.
The dams have broke and the news is out. Thanks go out to "Two Hands and a Radio" for suggesting this item to me.
The FM band is now a usable feature compared to my R9012, MW has become an even more sensitive beast compared to my other handhelds. Shortwave stations come in nice and clean with a better speaker tone.
My favorite features: Price/Performance ratio!, Band LED indicator, and cool Olive Green case...I feel boot camp ready carrying it. The carrying strap that can double as survival gear. Hearing my beautiful FM stations again. All of these things and more can be yours! are you TECSUN ready?

My brother has bought this little stuff and he is pretty much happy by using this. Although it's shortwave reception is mediocre or quite average, but it is common issue for the place where the radio is operating. But my brother is overall happy for it's AM and FM reception. It is very handy and power saving. I suggest this radio for good dxing. This type of radio shows their hidden strength in rural area where there is no signal distortion. From Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Am a fan for shortwave stations and because you said SW reception on this radio is fantastic, I ordered it from Amazon today. Thanks!
This radio is amazing. Love it I was picking up a station in Australia last night. AM is awesome too. Great review todderbert.
This radio amazes me every time I take it out. Without a doubt, the best MW pocket radio I have ever owned.
I've been wondering about this unit. I've seen quite a few reviews by folks claiming the 909 was better than the 9012. Think I'll take the plunge. Thanks for the review. 👍
I just received the tecsun 909 and eagerly waiting to test it out for SW stations this evening. Am from India.
Received ..how's the fm reception..which site you purchase.. AliExpress is safe any additional exicise tax given..pls reply ..iam from Kerala
Thanks a ton my friend. Getting a lot of SW stations and best of all the BBC. Thanks again...please keep in touch.
Купил недавно такой же приемник выпуска 2010 года. Очень доволен работой данного аппарата. Супер-прием!
Very nice review Sir...I'm not sure how ole my 909 is now, maybe 7 or 8 years since I bought for $13.00 USD and was so happily surprised that this receiver is no piece of junk...I bought it on a whim cause of the price and I've two PL-660's that I believe are the best bang for the buck as for a world band plus air band receiver...I can't say I use this radio a lot, I don't...But it does come with me anytime we're out fishing mainly at night on the boat...Use it to listen to local baseball games...It is an amazing lille pocket rig with great sensitivity...It's head and shoulders above other receivers in this price range...Great rejection and sensitivity on the HF frequencies...I still have the original batteries which I remove after each use...I've an extensive HF receiver collection which ranges up to $1700 units and magnetic loop antenna which is another $500...Yes, it's just under a $20 radio, but this one works...Remember it is what it is and it's not a big table top receiver, but for a throw away rig, it's a wonderful lille rig...
Thank you GLK001. I agree. It is a perfect portable that can go anywhere with you.
I have that radio in home and it works perfect I live in Slovenia (Central Europe) but on afternoon and night on SW I Can also catch chinese and USA stations
It has been years since I last used a radio, and thanks to your review, I was able to decide which radio to pick. I live in China at the moment, and I bought it online a couple of days ago for about 70 RMB ($10). It just arrived, and I was impressed when I picked up radio stations for Russia, Korea and Japan! I think one station might even be from North Korea! (I'm not very far from the border).
Oh yeah, and mine arrived in a box
too cool! glad it worked out for you. I'm planning a revisit of this radio.
Love your radio videos! Well done my friend, very interesting! I love radios too.
Thank you Dieter, the 909 is an excellent portable.
A dummy on Amazon said they couldn`t even turn their radio on because the manual was in Chinese.
great video, if you have the chance to buy onli one radio, which one would you buy R9012 or R909?
if want better FM, take the r-909, else, take the r-9012, r-9012 performs better in older band (MW & SW)
New subscriber. Like short wave, and liked your review. Thanks for doing these
Thank you! , I'm mainly into Medium Wave DXing. Shortwave is a fun hobby that's also finding it's way into my nightly listening.
Thank you very much for your reviews! Though you seem to speak very fast at times and as a non English speaker I find it sometimes difficult to follow you! By the way I own many different radios and I benefit from your reviews much. Thanks again! 73!
Persian Radiofan Mostafa! 73!😜 Gotcha! Haha!
Probably would have been better to review this radio at night when AM & SW Reception is ideal. Thanks for sharing👍👍
I did in my second review: ua-cam.com/video/6OKNDqPD2NA/v-deo.html
I like to buy Tecsun 9700 please would you like to advise me..?
To buy it or another. Choice..
Awesome video! I've got a look-alike, the Kaito KA228 multi band radio but in a silver casing. Has been the best portable am/fm/sw I've had in many years, even better than the tecsun pl-660. Tecsun, sangean, kaito, Eton, grundig and many others out there all have similar models
Hello sir. Is this R-909 a true analog radio?
Yes it is.
Can this receive hf band? 7.095MHz This frequency to be exact?
Sir What is DX Mode Exact & Is it Really Useful....📻
Mainly DX is wide open with no filters. Local mode is used when the station, or nearby stations are too strong.
Sir, I am from the Philippines. How can I order this Tecsun R-909? Can I easily listen to Radio Australia, BBC, VOA... anytime 24 hours?
It's available on Lazada.
Do you still recommend the 909!over the 9012? Where does the d220 fall into place?
If you need fm, the 909 is good. The 909, and 9012 are all analog radios. The D220 is a DSP radio, and will tend to tune, and lock on stations better, but the R9012 may outperform it on the AM/SW bands.
@@todderbert thanks a lot! The 9012 it is! I just bought a d-219 and Like it for when I sprawl myself in the couch. But I have a soft spot for analog. I have a bunch of them.
I sent away for the 909 . I hope it's as good as the 9012 .
Well, according to you, I have no piece of junk. It picks up local stations very well, but so far, I have only gotten one international station, one time only, and that was Havana Cuba, I live in Alabama USA. I've tried all 7 bands at different times of the day and night, and nothing. The main reason I bought it was to pick up international music since it is supposedly a world receiver, in that sense, it is a piece of junk.
Un saludo, recientemente compre una y me ha gustado mucho.
The kk-9® looks similar. You get what you pay for, and after looking for a cold solder joint I found the" Dx " switch was a "dummy". Ps found 2 cold joints. And as I was a army radio man it was easy to find them. Now from mediocre, to a super radio. as selectivity and audio quality came up 30% . Happy with a $5.99. throw away? you bet. Tks Fer good show. De kv4li. 73
Kchibo/ Kaide Radios are junk.
They copy exterior of Tecsun shamelessly.
Available at $3 in India.
@@AsitPaulKmp right I gave to child/neighbor/ the radio. In a pouch. With a home made antenna. (A gator clip/3 meter) 18 gauge wire. First radio. ( Short wave)Hi hi. It does work well. After I debugged it. Cold joints are hurting there rep. Good day de kv4li
Do you think this better than the R9012?
As a complete package, yes, but if you are only going to tune AM, and SW, then the 9012 is the way to go.
Tecsun R 9012 or tecsun R909, what do you think?I am more interested in medium and short waves.
R9012.
@@todderbert Thanks for the reply. Good luck!
Always...check out shortwave operating range. There are better ones that begin @ lower frequencies
My tecsun r-909 is DC jack not working and without receive any sw signal at any time. But only good for fm receiver .
the shortwave starts @ 6.40 which wont capture lower Mhz todder
Which one is the most sensitive for Shortwave, the Tecsun R9012, R909 or the R9700 ?
R9700DX, R9012, then R909.
@@todderbert Thanks! You're the Man! 🙂
Well, based on your review and the the other very positive ones I've watched of this oldish radio I've decided to get it... it wasn't that easy. The thing is not widely available anymore, at least here in France. I had to order from China at a significantly higher price than e.g. a D-219 or a R-9012. But I don't regret my purchase. It is a lovable little radio and an excellent performer for an analog one.
Hello... there's a new 2023 version and I can't believe it's still around
I ordered one and will have it in a few weeks. What is new in the "new 2023 version" and how can you tell you have this new version?
Hello again sir... which one is best between R-9012 and this R-909?
If you listen to MW and Shortwave mainly the R-9012. If you listen to FM, MW and Shortwave pick the R-909.
@@todderbert thanks alot!
@@Madmax-TV You're Welcome! The 909 is my personal choice, but if I was on a serious budget the R-9012 would be the one to buy. I love MW listening and it does an amazing job. Plus it's shortwave is good with more available bands to listen to.
@@todderbert And about this R909 vs D-328, which one is better?
i recently bought this one. and i cant believe how small this one but packs a lot of power. sadly im on the philippines and almost all on the sw band are chinese. i got one signal from spain. am and fm are great. just get a good rechargable battery i got a Sanyo eneloop pro and ive turn it on for two whole days and its still on. and get a good charger for it like nitecore um2. good for ni-mh and 18650's
I've had this R-909 for over a month now and I find tuning into faint shortwave stations tricky compared to my PL-330 (connected to a reel long wire antenna). Radio China International dominates the airwaves in the Far East (I live in Malaysia) and they really pump up the wattage of their transmitters in China. Some of these Chinese stations really have very wide bandwidths and overlap into adjacent frequencies occupied by other international stations.
I can pick up NHK Japan, Radio Taiwan and South Korean but their audio quality is not as good as Radio China International. Radio Filipinas comes in clear at night though. Voice of Turkey from Ankara can also be heard under ideal night time conditions.
The R-909's short telescopic antenna is adequate for the size of this radio but you could pick up more stations (and unfortunately more noise) with one of the inexpensive reel antennas with a clip at the end of the wire. Tecsun also sells reel antennas with a 23 foot wire, if you're planning to buy one it should be the AN-05L model with the snap on clip (the AN-03L comes with the plug for radios with an external antenna socket).
Hope this helps. 😊📻
Do 1.2V AA baterries (which are very common on online stores nowadays) works on this radio sir?
@@nori2598 yes. rechargeable batteries are 1.2v when almost drain. but when charge they're 1.5v. just get a good quality rechargeable one, like Sanyo eneloop (black) have very high capacity. dont buy those cheap no brand one. ive tried it and even when fully charge they wont work but on flashlight they're ok and they have low capacity.
@@ginnfreecs2994 Do you mean that as long as you use quality ones, you can use 1.2V rechargeable batteries on devices (like this radio) that require 1.5V batts?
@@nori2598 yes im using Sanyo Eneloop pro 1.2v (black) on this device as of now. so it is working.

Hi thank you for your great videos very interesting.
Your Welcome Mark.
It is $22 at Amazon now. What sw radio do you like best at the $50.00 or less, the $100.00 or less and the $150.00: or less price points?
Hi sir.. can i ask which is better between R909 or R9012?
The 909 is best for all bands. The R9012 excels on MW and SW, FM is not as good as the 909s.
Ok i 'll choose 909. Thanks again sir. Happy subscriber here as always!
@@todderbert FM is VERY bad on my r9012 but it`s great on MW and shortwave. I can scan the shortwave bands so quickly to see if anything interesting is on. I wish the Tecsun 310et scanned the entire shortwave spectrum.
@@chimpjones6219 The FM on my R9012 isn't great either, lots of distortion. The 310ET is limited, but still very useful.
Sir, after years you are guilty again. I have just ordered a Tecsun R-909 to test. Thanks for sharing Pete. I owe you a lot. Soon I will help the channel again
Thank you Marcos, your support means a lot to me. Insider info, I revisit this radio in a 2.0 video and do a band scan with it. Should air hopefully within a week or so. I moved to an every other day release so I can focus on spending more time tuning with the radios :) and learning new things.
@@todderbert Thanks Pete! I will take a look!
I have the toy at home. Dispite my terrible QRM, I can say it is a great cheap pocket multiband radio. Decent MW/FM sensitivity and selectivity. With the help of a Tecsun AN-100 MW loop antenna MW shines. In SW is a real keeper. Recommended!
cool. as long as it serves a purpose. Many people can't afford the high end radios and these lower priced radios are their only options to the outside world. I'm glad Tecsun makes low cost radios for the masses.
Sir, I suscribe any word.
Rispected Sir,
Plz Explain me What is the DX button Function is Useful HOW ?
What is the best performing tecsun of the 50 dollar ranges or less
I would pick either the 310ET for Digital Tuning or the 9700DX for Analog Tuning.
@@todderbert why the 310 instead of the 380?
@@gloriasmith913 The 310 has a nicer sounding speaker. Slightly better MW reception and a aux. antenna port. I also like the 310's tuning knob.
Does it support external electric charger? And TV frequency?
No TV frequency, allows the use of an external DC input of 3volts, but only to power the radio, not to charge the batteries.
Hello,i need a kitchen radio to work good in fm for recive a church station with low power. I Have now a Panasonic rf 3500 and i Have problems with signal. Thank You.
Try the Tecsun PL-310 et. It works well on FM.
Good radio! Thanks
Its a solid, all around radio. A great buy under $20.
Too bad it doesn't cover the 60 meter tropical band as more exotic parts of the world use that band a lot and 60 meters is where you can find cool and interesting flea power stations in South America, Africa and Asia. The Kaito etc 911 covers 60 meters so get that one if you like to hunt exotic and rare music etc.If not then this model should suffice.
Hi, Great channel, I was wondering, sounds like Tecsun makes a good over all radio.....
Thank you Daniel. If your looking for an affordable, compact shortwave radio, Tecsun is your go to company. If your looking for AM FM portables only, Sangeans and Sonys are still awesome.
Hey where is Iron Man?😦
This radio looks like a Bell & Howell radio
I'm not sure if that's good, but this radio does perform!
@@todderbert I had the bell & Howell but had to let it go, the volume wheel was pushed in and would not turn correctly. Any advice on how to loosen the volume knob on this tecsun, especially when turning it off and on? If feel like it will suffer the same fate as the B&H
If you have skills, you can open the radio, remove the volume wheel and look at the on off switch and slider. you may be able to slightly move the metal contact bar for the switch to loosen it some. Don't move it to much. Just a little at a time.
Does anyone use long wave anymore ???
Not sure, but I'm guessing Europe. I pick up one beacon out of a small airport on 389kHz.
Yes it’s normally crispy old biddies who listen to BBC radio 4. They basically have bird aviaries, listen to The Archers so they can avoid their sex lives.
@@soldierloz The Archers 😂 throw in the Clitheroe Kid as well 🤣 (Where’s me shirt 👔)
@@richardshort4587 😆😆😆 excellent!
2-3 years ago its price was 16 dollars, and now 35 on ebay.
Does it support external electric charger? And TV frequency?
Ashwin Varghese TV frequency are allocated for Japanese FM (76-90 Mhz) or Russian OIRT FM (65-74 MHz) frequencies. These kinds of FM tuning receivers from 64 - 87.5 MHz are illegal to import, to bring, or to use in Papua New Guinea because of Police radio frequencies allocated from 68 - 87.5 MHz. Leave those TV sound (50 - 108 Mhz) receivers or World FM tuning receivers (64/76-108 MHz) at home. But you must bring FM receivers (87.5-108 MHz) in Papua New Guinea.
Ashwin Varghese TV frequency are only available on Tecsun R-9012, R-1012 and R-909T (no shortwave, but TV band).
