Yes I would say you need thick wood. I have used 4”x2” in the past and they will bow under the pressure. Paint the stands or use tantalised timber and place them on bricks so their off the floor.
@@gwenyngruffydd All lumber is sized less than it is called. 2x4 is 1.5x3.5 1" lumber is 3/4" I'm 68 and as long as I can remember lumber has been sized small. I remember when a 2x4 was 1.75" x3.75". I guess it so they can get more lumber from a tree. Most lumber, if you don't use it fairly soon after purchase it twists and warps, if left to sit.

That’s my favourite spec for a hive stand. But I do use 2x4 as well.
I only mentioned it as here in the states most 2x6 are 1.5x5.5. If you want full size you would have to go to a mill.

Harold Keiner our wood does that too. Unless we buy CLS timber. I think they are sized much smaller too.
