For as many repair videos that I've watched, this is the FIRST time someone has talked about down-time impact. I thought I was the only one who worried about that! LOL. The critical thing on down-time, when a repair has to be made, is to MAKE SURE ALL THE PARTS YOU NEED ARE ON-HAND. Starting the repair, only to find you need an un-available seal, or retainer, or bearing, etc. is a nightmare when you're in the middle of repair, and wind up awaiting a small part (or large part), and you're dead-in-the-water until the part arrives.

Your preaching to the choir, I was a mechanic and it would be like pulling teeth to get folks to get this service done so when doing a brake job wether new brake pads or a brake rotors all the bearing got service I would charge in the labor cost no fighting

I’m 60 been in the construction industry since I was 20 what I’ve learned is if the wheels are turning the truck is not helping make money do the schedule maintenance and if you have a problem with the truck fix it sooner because it’s often cheaper than letting it go you just tear it up more

Agree 100%. My dad was a carpenter, and his Skil worm drive failed. He brought it to the shop, yet still bought another. I asked him why, and he said that he makes $200+ a day, and he'd rather buy another saw than miss 2 or 3 days of work.

This is absolute facts! Downtime is costly no matter what business you are in!

FYI to one and all "TIMKEN-BEARING(S)" are the Rolls Royce of Bearings. You will not always be able to get the brand TIMKEN to repair / replace your project, but if you can, spend the $$ money $$, well worth it.

"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" a few cents of fluids/lubrication/preventative maintenance at regular intervals goes A VERY LONG way in prolonging the life of equipment. "buy once cry once" aka replace with quality replacement parts, don't scrimp on parts because you will end up having to go back in sooner to re-fix it.
    Good call...do it right...the first time ;)

Unfortunately, in current times, preventatively replacing parts is a wildcard due to the massive amount of inferior new parts on the market.

I like it when some people cheap out on their maintenance and when something goes wrong they come to me..then when i ask them what they did..now it has to be done all over..incurring double cost..should've brought it to me in the first place..oop's..

As long as your seals are good and the grease doesn't get washed out.. wheel bearings are self healing; because as they go dry and heat up, the grease will then thin out from the heat and it will drain back down into the bearings and self lubricate again. This is how they end up lasting so long even when they get neglected. When a bearing finally does blow apart, you can bet it was from a seal being torn up and they drove through a lot of water and washed out all the grease, which is actually difficult to do.

the ford 8.8 axles have plastic inside of them, so when they fail... it becomes a spectacle.

Ford added the plastic so GM couldn't sue them for copying the 12 bolt!😆
