Mohammed Rafi doing a children's lullaby!! Brahmchari (1968) was the film in which Shammi Kapoor finally bagged the Filmfare Award 🏆 for Best Actor. Mostly his films were frothy musicals, Teesri Manzil (1966) with Asha Parekh, Helen, Salim Khan, An Evening In Paris (1967) with Sharmila Tagore, David, Pran, KN Singh. By this time, he had already lost his wife Geeta Bali in 1965 due to smallpox. Trivia: Here's an interesting tidbit for you: Did you know?? While filming Shammi Kapoor linked up with Mumtaz. He wanted to marry her & settle down once again, but she had the responsibility of looking after her family. He wouldn't marry until 1969- to Mrs. Neila Devi (if you check Shammi Kapoor's UA-cam page, you will see that he said they met when he was 19 and she was 9)!!! By this time, however, the sun was setting on heroes like Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar (1929-1999), even Raj Kapoor (1924-1988) his last blockbuster was Sangam (1964) where, clearly, he was past his prime!!! Dilip Kumar's career was running out of steam- he would take a sabbatical for 5 years (1976-1981) before doing Kranti (1981) & Shakti (1982) in supporting roles. Dev Anand soldiered on as the Evergreen star till 1978 with Des Pardes. Times change, so do tastes & trends!!!

It is a plural noun encompassing the singer, composer and poet et al. A peace of advice for you now. Whenever a song is appreciated the cynosure of all eyes and the centric force necessarily remains the singer. This holds true not only for Rafi saab rather it will remain true for any singer , simply because the driving force behind any song remains the singer. It is the singer who correlates with the spirit, pain and ethos of the lyrics and improvises to translate them on the canvas of reality with a degree of perfection that often becomes astounding and unimaginable. He could well even fail to relate with the passion of the poet and go on to spoil the broth. In that case the charm will no more be there either in the poem or the poet and as a corollary the appreciation for the singer as well would have evaporated and fizzled. So you see how important is the role that the singer plays in the making of a song that would immediately appeal to the senses of the audience in general and the intellectual elite in particular. I hope you understand the modus operandi working behind any critique written in appreciation of a song. What percentage of the population remembers the immortal poem "madhushala" written by the great poet Harivansh Rai Bacchhan? I would say only an infinitesimally small elitist group has cared to internalise, remember and appreciate it in it's unsung form. Make a memorable song of that poem and forthwith it gets impregnated and embedded upon the psyche of the masses for generations and eras to come.
