  • Day 290 - Another project manager called me yesterday with a question about a project closure document template I’d made. After our talk, she asked me “Are you sleeping better?” “Yes” I said. “Much better.” “What changed?” She asked… In a second, a dilemma passed through my head. How do I tell her that the problem was work all along? She’s suffering the same issue as me, can’t sleep at night due to work stress, but she’s still young, with a mortgage, and small children, and decades of necessary work ahead. How do I say, “I’m better now because I found a way out. I at last grew old enough to escape; but you can’t come, not yet at least.” I lied a little and told her I’m better because my big two-year project is done, which is the truth, just not the whole truth.
And now I think I’m understanding a little why some old people who feel as I do-that work is like a prison sentence-don’t talk about retirement as feeling like a form of escape. It’s because it seems insensitive to talk that way in front of young people who may have years or decades of hard labor ahead, their prison sentences being long from over. It’s better perhaps to just keep quiet and let them find out for themselves someday. Let them discover the feeling of release when their time has come, and when their long sentence is through.
