  • Retro fans seldomly catch my attention, but this was one exception. Full metal construction, faithful recreations of various parts, and decent performance... it's definitely one of the best retro fans I've ever came across!

    Ita not breeze it's the white noise. You just can't beat that bering low burrrr and fading in and out with oscillating. My grandma had one, and I'd sleep so well listening to it.

    These fans I have seen at my local Walmart before and the mainstays brand without the logo on the badge too, lack of oil from a new fan stinks unless the user knows how to fix it.
    I just got my first fan for this year while visiting canada again, a super desk fan that says super on the base and I posted a pic on my channel post.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому

      I agree. It's planned obsolescene implemented by the manufacturer to prevent their products from having a very long lifespan.
      Neat! I saw the photo you posted of the Super. That would be an early 90s model.

  • @Panacycle
    @Panacycle 6 місяців тому +2

    I have the slightly older version that's branded mainstays and also has a normal cord. I tried using it but it seized up about halfway through the season, so you are spot on about the lack of oil.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому +3

      Yikes, it sucks that so many newer fans come with insufficient oil in the bearings. Planned obsolescene is probably to blame.

    My 16 inch version of this fan and the electrically identical UtiliTech model both had an issue with the bearings locking up, I wonder if these 8 inch fans have the same issue? Let me know how it goes.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  Місяць тому

      So far no issue! But I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually does lock up, because the bearings sound underlubricated out of the box. It's a bummer that this is such a prevalent issue in fans nowadays.

    Neat fan. These are just meant for the appearance and not for the performance at all. I own a 16" retro fan and it's airflow is awful. Today's big box store do better than these. However, you can't really complain when it comes to built quality with these fans since they are completely metal.

    • @sivaranjanis596
      @sivaranjanis596 6 місяців тому +1

      Actually, if you bought this fan last year why didn't it show up in the 2023 fan collection?

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому

      True! Most retro fans tend to have better looks and build, but fall short when it comes to airflow and noise.
      I kind of forgot about this fan during the production of the 2023 fan collection video, since it was still inside the box and tucked away on the shelf lol. But it'll be in this year's montage!

    I just got one, $28 US. But mine has a round knob speed control switch and the color is "sage." I ran it all night with no problems, everything worked on day one. Quiet enough. The sound is good for sleeping. Hopefully it will hold up because I like it. I don't like as much as my older US-made Hunter brand 12-inch retro fan that I use every day in hot weather. I think one company in Chines makes these for lots of different retailers. Thanks for the review!

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 місяці тому +1

      No problem! You’re definitely right about the generic nature of these fans. Most big box store fans are like that.
      I think the rotary switch design is new for this year. I do like the new colour options they introduced too. Nothing beats true vintage fans but this is definitely one of the better big box store fans you can buy nowadays. I would keep an eye on the bearings though. If the fan ever runs unusually slow or squeals, apply a few drops of oil to where the motor shaft enters the bearing. Under-lubrication is a common problem on today’s fans unfortunately.

  • @nostalgiccameralife
    @nostalgiccameralife 5 місяців тому +1

    I just bought one of these, marked down to $21 (it seems they may have been recently discontinued). Bearing noise started after about three seconds of running, prompting me to look online for reviews. So I see I'm not the only one, I suppose this is normal for these.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  5 місяців тому +2

      That’s a really good deal! Yes bearing noise due to insufficient and/or poor quality lubrication is extremely prevalent in today’s fans. I usually take the motors apart and oil them myself before using new fans.

  • @moonglade80
    @moonglade80 4 місяці тому +1

    Is there a way to add lubrication to these as it seems they are being made without enough? I had one very similar in red from Wal-Mart I loved which stopped working a few years ago. I wonder if it seized due to not enough lubricant? 🤔

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  4 місяці тому

      Yes, it likely did seize up due to dried up oil, which is a very common problem with these fans.
      This video (ua-cam.com/video/0pT9p-bajxg/v-deo.htmlsi=w7sEOcHZCo8jn1OF) shows the disassembly process for the fan, and I’d suggest following it up until the 2:00 mark. Try applying some oil (3-in-one electric motor oil (blue & white bottle), or Zoom Spout all purpose oil) to the area where the motor shaft enters the motor, and see if it frees up.
      If not, follow the video up to 3:18. From there, you’ll see 3 screws on the back of the motor that holds the white plastic gearbox to the motor itself. Undo them and you should be able to pull the gearbox away from the motor, exposing the rear motor shaft. Oil can be applied in the same manner. Usually this will free up the motor.
      Hope it helps! Feel free to let me know how it goes or if you have any questions!

    I like the looks of this fan, and how they seemed to have paid attention to the antique details. I do wish they try making the performance as powerful as the antique ones though, but I can’t really complain since the price will probably increase a lot

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому +2

      I very much agree! Wider, steeper-pitched blades, and a more powerful motor could boost its performance. But considering its current price, and the abundance of good quality metal parts, I think it's acceptable where it's at.

  • @coled5090
    @coled5090 6 місяців тому +2

    I’m usually not big on retro fans, and I usually find Walmart’s fans rather boring, but I do really like these. I have two in this color when they were under the Mainsyays brand (no name on the badge) and they had a black rubber cord.
    I like how the motor housing is big kinda like an Emerson 77646, and how the oscillator knob spins when it’s oscillating.
    They did redesign these a bit this year, the colors are more pastel and they have a dial switch instead of the lever, which I don’t like as much.
    It also comes in a larger version which usually seems to be beige, and a 16” pedestal version.
    I do agree the lubrication on these is bad, one of mine I found at Goodwill would barely start when I got it.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому +1

      I remember watching your video on the Mainstays version, and that actually first sparked my interest in these fans!
      I agree, I like the look of the rather fast spinning oscillator knob. It's one of those cases when the view of the back of the fan is nearly as interesting as the front lol. I wouldn't be surprised if the Emerson motor housing shape contributed to the design of this fan's housing.
      Interesting, I looked up the fan on the Walmart.com site and I couldn't find the new versions. But I do remember checking some months ago and seeing the version with the dial. Maybe they brought back the slider switch versions?
      I haven't seen a single video of these fans that were well lubricated out of the box lol.

    • @coled5090
      @coled5090 6 місяців тому +1

      @@TheSuperFanMan yes! That oscillator knob reminds me of the GE strap fans have a similar shaped knob that spins too.
      Yeah, maybe they haven’t updated the website yet. I did see the new versions when I went to Walmart a few weeks ago.
      Oh and the Better Homes and Gardens is a magazine, I guess Walmart licenses the name for their more “premium” home and garden items. Sort of how they do for other brands like Farberware or in the past even GE.

  • @TheFanUniverse
    @TheFanUniverse 6 місяців тому +1

    I think their decision of placing the capacitor inside the base is a good one, not only because of the antique references, but also because it won’t be exposed to heat from the motor, which should make it last just that little bit longer. Krisbow’s 12” retro fan used to have a switch with a glossy indented knob instead of the bulbous rough plastic on yours, and the feel on that switch is very satisfying. Unfortunately they switched to the style of switch on yours & that feel is no longer there

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому +1

      Good point! I hadn't thought of that benefit with this capacitor placement.
      Yeah I've seen similar switch design changes too. The original almost always tend to be the best lol. Vornado's VFan Mini fans used to have a nice chrome toggle switch, now it's a black plastic rotary switch. I was told that the new version of this retro fan also got rid of the slider switch for a rotary knob switch, which is unfortunate.

    I've been curious about this fan for a while! Canadian Tire also sells then under their brand "For Living" so I'm sure it's a chinese fan that everyone slaps their name on it. I had a "retro" Sunbeam fan a while ago and it had similar blades and it didn't push much air!! and had that distinctive metal fak sound that you just cannot sleep with! lolll Oh well! Thanks for reviewing it!!!! Still waiting for the Superfanman Q&A! 😛

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  6 місяців тому +1

      Yep! That For Living version actually caught my attention too, mainly because of the nice gloss black finish. This most definitely is a generic overseas fan.
      Haha I know the exact sound you're talking about. I have the Holmes version (basically the same fan as the Sunbeam) and it sounds like an angry swarm of bees lol. I think this fan is far less annoying, though it doesn't seem to move quite as much air.
      The Q&A is coming! Either July or August this year, and I'm planning to do a live stream where everyone can tune in and ask questions live. Maybe if there's enough interest, I might eventually make a dedicated Q&A video in the future.

    Single grandma here. I just bought the same fan but it’s a 12”. Too bad you did not go over the tilting feature because mine does not tilt at all 😠. I turn the little tilting knob back and forth and nothing happens. Unless I figure this out, I’ll return the fan to Walmart. I paid almost $40 USD.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  5 місяців тому

      The 12” version is a different model, so even if I did show the tilt feature on this 8” fan, it could be irrelevant on the 12” version.
      To adjust, loosen the tilt knob by turning it counterclockwise, and manually tilt the fan head to the desired angle, and tighten the knob clockwise.
      If the fan doesn’t tilt to the angle you want, it may just be the limited tilt range of the fan and probably a poor thought-out mechanism design (unfortunately common in most overseas-made fans nowadays).

    This is a knock off of the Vornado retro fan. Any idea how the performance compares between the BHG and the Vornado Silver?

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  3 місяці тому

      The concept of retro fans wasn’t conceived by Vornado, so I wouldn’t say this is a knockoff. But performance-wise, I’d say the Vornado fans would outperform this. The blades on the Vornados are pitched more aggressively, and use more powerful motors, so they move more air with less noise.
