I know this is a year old post, but I feel like a lot of the hate against loli/shota stuff is the result of people who cannot fathom the concept of cute or adorable. A lot of loli stuff is mostly harmless and can be correlated to the real and acceptable attraction to petite and short adult women. There is no reason to be uncomfortable with this sort of content. However, there is a large subset of loli content that is explicitly pdophillic in nature. If the content makes a point to emphasize the extremely young age and childlike nature of the character, it is totally understandable to think that it is weird. I think there needs to be a better distinction between these two categories to prevent the "liking lolis is always pdophilia" misunderstanding.

Whether loli is part of anime or vtubing historically isn't really relevant though, the argument is that it's criminal or pedophilia and somehow harming children and therefore bad. Problem is it's (the anti- argument) just a false and hypocritical argument, like "violent video games make people violent" or "porn makes people into sex offenders", there have been countless studies on these things even and they've been repeatedly disproven. From what I've seen, most people aggressively making the anti argument fall into four categories; closet lolicons or actual pedos projecting, given how many get caught with it in their likes/favorites (or get caught soliciting actual minors), people doing it for bandwagon clout, people who just get off on harassing people, which is also kinda predator behavior. *At best* it comes from people who just aren't mature and can't separate their gut reaction of "that's gross/weird" (which is fine) from "that's immoral and needs to be purged" (which is not fine, without a sound logical basis...which in this case doesn't exist. I know this is a year old post, but I feel like a lot of the hate against loli/shota stuff is the result of people who cannot fathom the concept of cute or adorable. A lot of loli stuff is mostly harmless and can be correlated to the real and acceptable attraction to petite and short adult women. There is no reason to be uncomfortable with this sort of content. However, there is a large subset of loli content that is explicitly pdophillic in nature. If the content makes a point to emphasize the extremely young age and childlike nature of the character, it is totally understandable to think that it is weird. I think there needs to be a better distinction between these two categories to prevent the "liking lolis is always pdophilia" misunderstanding.

Whether loli is part of anime or vtubing historically isn't really relevant though, the argument is that it's criminal or pedophilia and somehow harming children and therefore bad. Problem is it's (the anti- argument) just a false and hypocritical argument, like "violent video games make people violent" or "porn makes people into sex offenders", there have been countless studies on these things even and they've been repeatedly disproven.

The issue here is the cognitive dissonance between ACTUAL "kid-diddlers", and the trope/genre/character archetype. If you go to Japan, "normies" use the word ロリコン to refer to kid-diddlers. In the anime/otaku/culture scene though, the same word is used just to describe people who likes loli characters or aesthetic. Heck, you can probably search for "goth loli cosplay Japan" and see old people in that aesthetic.
Provided the person (despite being an adult or not a child) is short enough, Japanese people of both "sides" will still refer to that person as a ロリ.

If you apply the same conflated mindset to Teens or other short characters in anime fiction you'll be thoroughly confused with the vast ocean full of characters with very young looking appearances but have assets that would make even Kim Kardashian cry with envy. A good example is High School DxD where adults and teens look so alike that only elderly people specifically drawn to look like granny/gramps actually look like "adults".
And tbh I doubt these people will even try to replace Vtubers after booting out the lolis. They act like they can rebuild communities from the ground up. But they never have the guts to actually commit to it. It's like how a lot of antis who hate AO3 refuse to use the code to make their own AO3.
