    Rory Dowling is one of the UK's foremost guitar builders and his company Taran Guitars is now well established with over a decade of creating excellent handmade instruments. In this video Rory tells me about the process of making one of his beautiful guitars and we look at three completed instruments - 2 versions of "The Taran" and a Tirga Beag (pronounced Chigra Baeg). All Taran guitars carry the Gaelic names of Scottish mountains. Evocative stuff.

    Have to shout from the rooftops how lovely working with Rory was and how exceptional the guitar he made for me is. Him, Zach and Caelin definitely know wood...10/10 for the setup/fretwork as well. Didn’t even have to ask for any tweaks. Just perfect. Great video to revisit, Michael!

      Gilbert Walker thank you Gilbert! Rory’s making some very special instruments. Check out the demo videos I did too to hear them up close and personal.

    Very interesting! I have never considered Wenge for a neck wood. The most recent acoustic guitar I had built is a parlor size from The great Canadian builder Peggy White, with a red spruce top and wenge back and sides. It’s a year and a half old now and the sound is absolutely astounding already. I can’t wait to hear how it sounds in another 10 years. The Wenge rings like a bell. It’s really a special timber!

      glad to hear that you know of her. I’ve got two instruments from her so far. I have a 12 string soprano guitar which is tuned from a to a, and I have the parlor. They are both amazing! She lives close to me, so we cross paths as frequently as possible :-)

      Absolutely !! What you do is amazing. I guess it helps also the luthiers to get more visibility as well. Great stuff, thanks for your work. You should strike a deal with the Luthiers because you're making them a fine promotion ;-)

    Wow 3.2mm top...that seems so thin. Must be really responsive.

    Will the laminate rocklite neck material seperate over it's life? If it gets a bit wet from getting caught in a rain storm

    • @MichaelWatts
      @MichaelWatts  6 місяців тому +1

      Highly unlikely. Rich lite is more of a compound than a laminate as I understand it.

    Enjoyed your video Michael, but as a Taran owner I am biased.
