Do you really think it’s possibly to palpate the psoas through all the body tissues? Is pain what you’re looking for here? I would say that palpating deep enough to get anywhere near the psoas would cause some pain.
Some Yoga practitioners do this exact palpation BUT with a medium inhale breath NEVER with a deep breath. The deep breath will actually tighten this area. Your client may have a tender area, so be very very patient and slow. This condition is hard to have it "release". Use visualization of a clench fist and the have client release it slowly with breath being released. Also "rescue postion"(back on floor) and both thighs/feet on couch. Deep slow breaths doing same visualizing and doing hand clenches helps my clients.

maybe the muscles belly itself but where people show palpating for the psoas is the bursa that runs over the hip socket
