Cooper probably one of the most electric return players since Tim Dwight. A bi week this week, why not consider involving Cooper into the offensive scheme of the Hawkeye offense?
I agree, but Coopers vision is just amazing. As a high school study QB, it's amazing what he sees as any play developes. The F&F team would never consider Cooper in a wildcat formation, but wow, how cool would that be? Cooper won't be back for his SR. year next year, as he will enter the draft, and why not, nothing will change in Iowa offense until a whole new system, without F&F politics and show.
A few takeaways. 1. “He who thinks they are always right, is a fool” - Kirk Ferentz “circa 2023” 2. There are apparently wizards controlling the outcomes of NCAA football games. 3. Kirk saying it is bad because of explanations he gets. Now you know how Hawkeye fans feel, Kirk. 4. Kirk must have gone to the White House spokesperson school, because he spits out political deflections like he was in the same class as the first black openly gay female spokesperson. 5. It must be a hard pill to swallow knowing your son is losing his job because of your own stubbornness and inability to adjust to the progression of a sport you are “The Dean” of.
The big ten would want a bad team in Indy tho so Michigan or Ohio looks better and can get into the playoffs easier. Also there are no good big ten west teams so I doubt they care that much.
it's clearly in the rule book. He made an invalid fair catch signal with his left hand. This makes it a dead ball at point of contact with the ball. Section 8, Article 1c: A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery. If the catch precedes the signal, the ball is dead when the signal is first given. Section 8, Article 2 - VALID SIGNAL: A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled their intention by extending one hand only clearly above their head and waving that hand from side to side of their body more than Section 8, Article 3 - INVALID SIGNAL: An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B: a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2
It's very unfortunate what happened to Cooper and the entire Woods squad. It's even more unfortunate the the F&F crew uses it as a smoke screen so they don't have to address the obvious reason the Hawkeyes lost the game.
I have no idea why he was using his left arm in a circle and pointing out the side line. Was the circle showing his other players he was going to circle around to the other side of the field. Did not look like a normal fair catch that is for sure😢
It's not a penalty, so you wouldn't throw a flag..what he did simply kills the play. Just like a valid fair catch signal would. This was a valid call and was handled properly regardless of what the players or you, the viewer, "thought" in that moment. If you're Minnesota, of course you attempt to tackle in that moment, bc you have no clue what the refs call there. Stop coping, take the L. He shouldn't have been waving his arm in that circular motion if he intended to return the punt. It wasn't a natural running motion and that's super clear to see. Iowa still had the chance to get in field goal range and win it with a FG and FAILED. Iowa lost bc Iowa freakin stinks. And Iowa freakin stinks bc the coaches are trash. Those are facts 😊

It was so obvious that he was waving when you watch the video. The TV commentator for the game even said it was a good call. An invalid fair catch can happen a few ways, but the key definition in this case is the first: "An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B that does not meet the requirements of [a valid fair catch]." Coach is supposed to know the rules.
I was at the game. I heard after that there was a total of 4 yards of offense by Iowa in the second half. You can put that in the equation when thinking about why Iowa lost this game. Plus, apparently what Cooper did was illegal…although what an incredible player.
How do you signal a fair catch in NCAA? To request a fair catch, the receiver must raise one arm fully above their head and wave it from side to side while the ball is in flight.
The issue is not the right or wrong call it’s that Iowa’s offense cannot generate first downs and points. PERIOD!!!! Our team is and has been an offensive laughingstock!
How do you signal a fair catch in NCAA? To request a fair catch, the receiver must raise one arm fully above their head and wave it from side to side while the ball is in flight.
Goldy said yes. Watching all the media hype about 11-1 CFP before the game, it reminded me of the Prime hype the beginning of the year. Your still in the race and the rest of the schedule doesn't have Minnesotas defence.
Don't we have a QB standing on the sidelines that one a bowl game last year? Why in the world is he not leading our offense? This whole game is on KF and BF and DH.
How do you signal a fair catch in NCAA? To request a fair catch, the receiver must raise one arm fully above their head and wave it from side to side while the ball is in flight.
Brian Ferentz and Tyler Barnes should be fired tonight and take the B1G money to buy the best SEC recruiting coordinator and a real offensive coordinator.
That was the worst call I have seen ever. The refs who decided you cant move your arms below your shoulders its a fair catch should never ever ref again.
So, in one game, the NCAA redefined how a fair catch is called. Just pointing and the natural swing of your arm when running is the same as waving your arm overhead. Unbelievable.
The kid can't wave his arm the way he clearly did. That indicates the ball will be left alone; that results in a dead ball on recovery. Know the rules before complaining.
If they called him for making a fair catch, why didn't they call a 15-yard penalty against Minnesota for immediately grabbing and trying to tackle him?
they didn't call him for making a fair catch. That is why they let the play continue and as soon as he started running, he was fair game and thus no penalty against Minnesota. Upon review, it was determined that he made an invalid "fair catch" signal and thus the ball would be dead at point of his contacting the ball with possession. This is clearly in the rule book and can't be any clearer. Any waving of the arm other than a valid fair catch signal, which is a waving of the arm above the head, is an invalid fair catch signal.
Talk about a rip-your-heart-out loss. I've been trying to flush it since the punt return was overturned. My only question is why we would put the ball in Deacon's hands to win the game with passing? I know our rushing game wasn't going very well, but I was shocked we came out passing on our final possession.
If you don’t have rules for a game and fail to enforce them, you don’t have a game. It’s indisputable that he was waving his arm during the punt. Iowa still had the ball with enough time to kick a field goal to win the game, but the execution was terrible like most of the game. Even so, Minnesota still had time to score again to win. So who knows what might have happened. Bottom line, the Gophers outplayed the Hawkeyes.
A fair catch is no longer valid once the ball hit the ground, but carry on. Oh I’ll also mention that if it was a fair catch gophers should have gotten a flag for attempting to tackle him and would have put us on the edge of field goal territory. We’ve got us a bit of an onion to peel here. But our offense is damn near the worst in the country so I’m just venting.
@@dddizzyddd #1 as soon as he started running, he was fair game, thus no penalty on Gophers since the whistle to stop play had not been blown. #2 - as per the rules he signaled an invalid fair catch signal. Doesn't matter what his intentions were because any waving of his arm other than raising it above his head is an invalid fair catch signal (which happened BEFORE the ball hit the ground) and therefore a dead ball at the point of where he touched the ball. Section 8, Article 1c: A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery. So when the refs now call a time out to review short yardage perhaps say a 4th down run for a 1st down or a dive into the endzone for the spot of the ball...they review it and see a hold call they missed and decide to call that, even though the original call was to spot the ball..got it.

If the review was for inbounds or out of bonds that's a specific review a ref cannot go looking for anything other than what the review was originally called for.
@@EdwardCurl invalid fair catch can be reviewed after the play, the reason a flag wasn’t thrown live is because flags result in a loss of yards. An illegal fair catch isn’t a loss of yards but results in the ball being returned to the initial return location if it’s deemed to have occurred upon the review. Most people don’t know this is a rule though because returners don’t usually attempt to return the ball after waving teamates off

He was definitely not running to the ball naturally but okay. 🙄

"A win is a win" is a good, smug excuse for winning despite having no offense, but when you lose - for the same reason - what's your excuse?
Maybe the coach should worry about his lack offense and not the refs.

With one of the softest schedules in the big 10 this year previous Iowa teams would be dominating these teams. I think it shows how far the program has fallen off and it might be finally time to turn the page.
Very True, That offense was totally lethargic in the second half. If they could move the ball with any consistency that play wouldn't have mattered.
One of the softest?
As a gopher fan I agree. I was wondering how bad we would lose and was shocked we won
Agree with a coaching change but has Iowa ever been higher than this 8-9 win season other than a couple outliers. Be careful for what you wish for
I get it, you’ve been evaluating for 25 years. But you were very wrong on Christiansen, wrong on Rudock, used the practice All-American reasoning for Spencer who was atrocious the entire time…. Every Iowa QB under KF regresses. We can’t trust your QB judgement.
On top of that, you have a completely inept OC. How can you expect him to mentor young QBs.
The exception was Brad Banks. Heisman final 4. A duel threat QB. It seems like Iowa is banking on big slow QB’s with throwing arms. Maybe it’s the Steeler uniforms and they they are recruiting Big Ben.
@@FanObservation-fh3el Brad only had 2 years. Agreed outside of Chuck, and def for KF Brad is the best. Intriguing what may have happened if he comes to Iowa immediately instead of UCF then Juco
For the remaining 4 regular season games and then a bowl game, it would appear Iowa needs to score 25 points a game for Brian Ferentz to keep his job. Since getting blown out 31-0 at Penn State, Iowa has scored 26,20,15,and 12 in the last 4 games. I would say Brian has his work cut out for him.
Prior to this game he had to average just under 30, 29 and change points per game so after only scoring 10 that number has to be at least 30.
Stop whining about the fair catch call Kirk.... even the rules expert they consulted during the telecast said it was a good call & he explained why.
The officials weren’t the scandal. 100 yards total offense is the scandal. With a competent offense that call doesnt matter.

Couldn’t agree more. Since we cannot control the officials, I’d recommend getting more than 115yds of offense. If we were even semi-competent at the things we CAN control that call wouldn’t matter. Bad call. But even worse offensive scheme/gameplan/development/recruiting/coaching etc. Complaining about officiating with THE worst offense in the nation is silly.
Best play ever and they stole it in broad daylight. Cooper is awesome!
The only thing the refs did wrong on that play was not whistle it dead immediately.
Cooper probably one of the most electric return players since Tim Dwight. A bi week this week, why not consider involving Cooper into the offensive scheme of the Hawkeye offense?
Because that’s where good players go to die
No, not even close to Timmy D!
I don't know how many times, last year, I told my brother It can't get any worse than Petrash. I was wrong!

I'm so gutted for the team and especially Cooper.

Couldn't blame them.

Section 8, Article 3 - INVALID SIGNAL: An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B: a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2
Should have won once again because of defense and special teams but finally lost because of lack of offense = Somehow offense got WORSE 😢
Somehow? Show me a team that loses their starting QB and best 2 receivers and gets better?
Ironic that Kirk has repeatedly said next man up for over 2 years and offense has continued to get WORSE.!!!!!!
Refs made the correct call. Minnesota dominated Hawks statistically in every category. The better team won. Anything else is loser talk. Fire BF.
If you look at the video, clearly, no one thought that was a fair catch. Not the players, coaches, or refs. Did anyone see a flag thrown?
It's not a penalty, so you wouldn't throw a flag..what he did simply kills the play. Just like a valid fair catch signal would.
This was a valid call and was handled properly regardless of what the players or you, the viewer, "thought" in that moment. If you're Minnesota, of course you attempt to tackle in that moment, bc you have no clue what the refs call there.
Stop coping, take the L. He shouldn't have been waving his arm in that circular motion if he intended to return the punt. It wasn't a natural running motion and that's super clear to see.
They can now call a penalty during review which wasn't called on the field. Every touchdown can now be called back during review for holding.
The kid can't wave his arm the way he clearly did. That indicates the ball will be left alone; that results in a dead ball on recovery. Know the rules before complaining.
@@markschuh3535agreed..why is this difficult to understand? Super simple..valid call..take the L.
See Section 8, Article 1c, Article 2 and 3 in the rule book.
"naturally running for the football", really Kirk? Who runs with one arm waving parallel to the ground?
The game should have been called a draw and a loss given to both teams. Abomination of football.
Talk about a rip-your-heart-out loss. I've been trying to flush it since the punt return was overturned. My only question is why we would put the ball in Deacon's hands to win the game with passing? I know our rushing game wasn't going very well, but I was shocked we came out passing on our final possession.
Games over! Score more points and you win.
I feel sorry for Floyd of Rosedale to be associated with either one of these teams.😢

Believe in coincidences all you want and be foolish if it makes you feel good. But this a screw job plain and simple. It was done to make some money for some specific people. In order to cover the spread, the team must surpass it by at least one point. 3.5 was the spread this time. Iowa would have won by 5 if they held Minnesota off after that touchdown had it stood. Last year Jack Campbell's touchdown had it stood would have had Iowa win by seven, and the spread was 3. They would have covered. I think I've proven it. Enough said.
So when the refs now call a time out to review short yardage perhaps say a 4th down run for a 1st down or a dive into the endzone for the spot of the ball...they review it and see a hold call they missed and decide to call that, even though the original call was to spot the ball..got it.
