- In this Bonsai video I show you how to care for Azalea Bonsai using techniques like; Deadheading, Pruning and Repotting. Azaleas are a popular choice for Bonsai because of their small, delicate leaves and beautiful flowers.
I explain the process of deadheading, a technique that involves removing seed heads to prevent energy wastage on seed production. I cover how to prune your Azalea Bonsai to achieve the desired height and explain the process of pruning for bifurcation. I also show you a method to thicken Azalea trunks using a pond basket and discuss various soil types suitable for Azaleas. Additionally, I demonstrate how and when to repot your Azalea safely (especially in the UK) so that they do not become pot-bound, setting them on their way to becoming a great bonsai.
Azaleas are part of the Rhododendron family, which contains over 1,000 species of plants. They are native to Asia, Europe, and North America, and come in a wide range of colors, from white to pink, red, orange, and even purple. They are a great choice for Bonsai because of their versatility, beauty, and ease of care. With proper training and maintenance, they can thrive for many years, bringing joy and serenity to any space.

Wonderful flowers!!!
Thanks Nigel! 🤗
Great, informative video. I just picked up an azalia from a local nursery and because it was looking a bit unhealthy I was able to get it for half price. Now I'll take this info and use it to bring back this beautiful little plant. Cheers
Beautiful colorful flowers🎉
Incredible sets of flowers and very well presented Adam. The debate at when is best to repot is always interesting and I have tried both several times over the last 8 years. In the end, I have found that I seem to get more consistent results doing the repot and hard prune about now. I think the bigger issue is pot sizing and soil used. A good video for anybody to watch :)
Thanks very much Xavier! 🤗 Ohh that is interesting! How hot does it get for you during the summer where you are? I would definitely go on the larger size of pot for azaleas 🌸
I'm taking care for and propagating Azalea's (also Satzuki's) for many years now and I do agree with your way. Perhaps a few additional things. Removing those flowers who withered (indeed: totally!) can extend the flowering periode a lot and of course: keep them out of the direct afternoon sunlight and out of the rain, pouring into the flowers. You can experiment with the soil mixture but when you use mainly Kanuma soil (which tend to turn slightly acid in time), you should use normal fertilizer but when you are using a mixture that is not acid (or doesn't turn acid), then you should use a fertilizer that is specially suitable for Azalea's and so on. Do not mix that up otherwise the soilmixture gets too acid or it doesn't get acid enough. It's a mistake that Kanuma users make quite often. Personally, I use Kanuma mixed with Azalea soil (from a garden centre). It makes the mixture cheaper and it prevents it from drying out too soon, wich can happen these days quite easily during hot and dry spring or summer periods (I live in the Netherlands). I always repot after flowering and removing the withered flowers and a lot of foliage and then keep them out of the direct sunlight for a while. And you are very right: Azalea's are very resilient. Originally they are growing in quite harsh conditions and in mountain regions. There, they tend to grow rather low. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your experience and tips! 🌸 Your advice on soil mixture is very useful especially if I switch to using Kanuma soil! Repotting after flowering and keeping them out of direct sunlight for a while is excellent advice too. Azaleas are indeed resilient, growing in harsh conditions in the wild. Thanks again for the helpful tips, and good luck with your azaleas in the Netherlands! 😊
amaaaaaazing, hi from darjeeling, india
Great info and confidence :) Glad I found your channel
So much great information on azalea bonsai. Great video Adam!
First time catching one of your videos, good stuff man. Also great timing as the day you posted this was the day I brought home my first two azalea to get started. Really excited to add some flowers to my existing bonsai.
Great video Adam they are some nice trees mate 👊👊
Thank you Andy! 🤗🌳
Excellent tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you very much! 🤗🌳
Great stuff, thanks mate!!
Очень красивые растения 🌱👍
Great video as always.
Thank you very much Dave!
Excellent tutorial, much appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video answered all my questions about azaleas. Thanks
Glad you found my video useful!
Thanks. Beautiful
Thanks for watching Janet!
You're welcome. I got a question: I repotted my focus and found either a root or limb below soil level that has two seedlings sprouting up. What should I do??
Really good video on Azalea bonsai especially why to remove the seed sack to put all the energy into the tree. Taking about trees wanting to pass on their DNA I know of some trees who have never flowered then suddenly one year they have a great flush of flowers, then the tree dies due mainly from being neglected over time, happy to think it has passed on it’s DNA from the seeds it produced. Really good idea to use chop sticks to hold the tree in the basket. Thanks for the video Adam BTW I don’t have any azaleas in my collection.
Thanks Adam. 🌸 Would like to see the progression of some these azaleas. Ty
I will post updates in the future on my channel and my instagram @notionbonsai 🙂
Great movie like always Regaeds from Galway
Hey thanks so much! Hi from Derry!!
Enjoyed this and those azalea are looking vibrant and healthy.
You need a tiny little bonsai towel for dabbing the rain off those flowers 😂
Azaleas, unlike many other trees, are basally dominant and grow strongest low down. This means they put out lots of suckers from the base, shoots and stronger growth low down so prune these bits strongest. Since the apex is weaker, prune it less.
And they propagate easily from cuttings so save any larger bits you prune off to grow roots.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🌸 Haha, a tiny bonsai towel sounds perfect! 😂 Thanks for the tips on pruning azaleas Jason. For sure they send out lots of suckers! During the growing season I am always cutting the ones at the base out!
Great video, thank you for the detailed walkthrough. I had one question, where do you get your big tub of wound seal putty?
Wow. Where did you buy your tool storage?
I enjoy your video's and explaination. I learn a lot. Thanks
This was a very well executed tutorial on getting this done, also the full explanation of getting air pockets out from under the bonsai in order to have a healthy root ball grow. Really enjoying your content.
Maybe at some point you could visit Tradman's bonsai in japan?
Hey! I am glad you enjoy my videos 🙂 Maybe! I have not heard of this before.
Free watering services 😊
Yes for sure!!
Perfect timing. I am going to dig up some azaleas out of the backyard and pot them soon! I need information on yamadori (yardadori?) azalea bonsai!
Ah nice one! In the uk I recommend to repot in early spring instead of after flowering unless you can keep your trees in a humid environment in partial sun 🤗
Hi Adam great vid! Im from Doire myself and been watching your vids for a few months now and i was wondering do you get your substrate locally or online.
Great video again Adam. I'm working on an azalea rescue project. Bought three in one small pot, almost no leaves, the whole thing dry as a desert. Since I've heavily watered them some new leaves have started to form, but last week I repotted them into pond baskets and a 1:1:1:1:1 of akadama, lava, pumice, zeolite and ericaceous compost- now we water and pray ^_^
Btw, do you only work with Satsuki's? Or do you have Kurume's as well?
Ah nice one! I hope it survives for you! If you mist the azalea with a solution of epsom salt i have fount that this helps boost chlorophyll in the leaves! 1/2 tablespoon of epsom salt to 1L of water!
@@notionbonsai Oooh definitely gonna try that- hadn't heard that one before. Thanks for the tip!
Really hoping they'll pull through ^_^
Can we get a Notion Hair channel? Your curls are amazing!
🤣🤣
Beautiful set of trees. Unfortunately azaleas can't bear the cold in my area unless in ground or put in a coldframe/greenhouse, which I don't have and make jealous of my club members' beautiful azaleas.
Chào bạn hoa đẹp
Cảm ơn! Mình cũng thấy hoa đẹp! 🤗
Great video, I just wish I could grow azaleas here in the Palm Springs-Indio California area. It’s so hot here from May through October. Rain, what’s that. Can grow other plants and trees. I learn much from your videos that can be applied to other plants and trees.
Thank you! 🌸 Azaleas can be tough to grow in such a hot and dry climate. It's great that you can still apply the techniques to other plants and trees, though. Keep experimenting and adapting what you learn, and you’ll surely have success with the plants that thrive in your area 😊
Great video, Adam, flowers not flewers, lol, 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hello Adam where do you order your bonsai soil mix
That one you repotted was gorgeous!! I love that color! Where are you from may I ask? I had family from County Down, Bainbridge I think it was? My sister and I want to visit there someday along with Fyvie Scotland as we had a lot of family there too.
I always enjoy the flowers on Azalea! I am from Derry 🤗 Co. Down is a nice place too!
Wow! Your azaleas looks stunning😍 I bought one earlier this spring but I don’t think it’ll flower until next year☹️ It was a bush from a garden center and I split the 4 trunks and sadly 2 of them died for some reason, I hope the other 2 survives until next year😍
Thank you Dahlmasen 🤗 No rush in Bonsai! You will surely get flowers next year! Maybe the 2 that died did not have enough root or may have been stressed too much. Glad the other 2 lived for you!
Thank you for the video. I would have a question, what's the after care when you pruned them, do you keep them in the shade for a while or they can go back on the same spot? (Quite exposed and sunny in my case)
After pruning, they can go back to the same spot. After repotting, I like to protect them and keep them in a humid environment for a few weeks. 🤗
just pruned one of my azaleas last night. its a rhoda azalea hybrid i found last summer on my trip to new jersey (the garden state lol) for 12$ i got 2 plants in one pot.. i let one flower and the 2nd i kept pruning the flowers off to let it get healthier. nice work adam! what are you using for pests (imp)?
Ah lovely! It is always great fun to prune 🤗 I am just using a general pesticide for the aphids.
😍🌳
🤗🌳
I don't have any azaleas but I did enjoy the video 😊
Thanks Rojin! 🤗🌸🙂
👍👌🙂
🤗🌳♥🌸
video 2 of asking you to please make a bonsai in the shape of your channel logo
I really like this idea! I am now on the hunt for a suitable tree for this! Thanks for the idea!
@@notionbonsai yay
Hi Adam how come the leaves of my azalea is brown...please help me save my plants,,,,Thanks
Hi! Brown leaves on an azalea can be caused by several factors. It might be due to underwatering, overwatering, poor drainage, or exposure to too much direct sunlight. Check the soil moisture, ensure it's draining well, and place the plant in a spot with indirect light. If you see any signs of pests or diseases, treat them accordingly. Good luck, and I hope your azalea recovers soon! 🌿😊
If you wait until the flower is in full bloom to remove it, isn't most of the energy of the plant already expended?.. is there an earlier stage to spot that can completely negate the process (branch by branch)
Hey! This is a great question! If an Azalea is particularly stressed and you really need it to recover from something, for optimal energy conservation, you can remove flower buds at the early bloom stage, when they are just beginning to open, though this sacrifices the aesthetic value of the blooms. If the tree is healthy, it is still completely fine to deadhead them right after the flowers start to wilt. This way the tree does not waste any energy in creating the seed head. I hope this helps!
@@notionbonsai thanks!
I feel like having suck a fst fraining soil is unnecessary, why add all the grit and then put moss on to hold water. Why is ericaceous compost with grit or pumice of whatever no more suitable especially if u dont want to be a slave to the watering
Hey! I totally understand your concerns. It rains a lot where I live so I personally prefer to use faster draining soils. I find the sphagnum moss is a lot more aerated and better for root development than mixing in compost. Though there is nothing wrong with doing this either if you live in a climate with less rain. Hope this helps! 🤗
