As a BMW tech. I strongly agree with you about the quality of gas being important to the overall performance of the vehicle. But there's one thing that you said that isn't exactly correct. You referenced the issue of the n54 (or any other n5x engine for that matter) having and issue with carbon build up in the intake. Yes. V power does run cleaner than most pump brands the issue with those engines as well as most modern engines is the direct injection. With direct injection. The fuel never touches the back side of the intake valves where they seat into the head like traditional port injection. So in that case the extra additives for cleaning the valves are not applicable. At dealer we regularly pull the intakes off and walnut blast the intake valves to clean them and maintain performance. Great content but just saw that and it bothered me to not inform.

Love the way you've modded the car so far, quality parts and it looks so clean! Excellent video as always
I’ve owned one for a good few years now and in the uk 2004 model, she is on 130k now and done bearings last year at 128k and the rod bearings were perfectly fine and had another probably another 30k+ on them, but peace of mind I suppose. One of the issues I’m tacking just now is play at 12oclock in my steering wheel, replaced the lower coupling and still not fixed. Really really annoying, have a purple rack steering rack and new track rod assembled to go on next.
If your M3 gets a paint correction and full detail I hope you make a full video on it. Something satisfying about cars been snow foamed, wheel fallout removers , shampood , waxed/sealants and tyre dressing been applied. 👍🏼
If you coat the plastic trim pieces with some of the ceramic coating stuff (like Avalon king) it brings it back to life - no need to replace! Maybe they’ll even sponsor you to do it
Not my personal car to give an opinion on but you cannot say "Maintenance first" then spend almost $9000 on suspension and mods and disregard the rod bearings and vanos. My m3 still on stock shocks and wheels but i can beat on it all day everyday and not worry about my engine blowing up. Ive done rod bearings and vanos ive yet to do my subframe i have the redish plates just waiting on bushings. You should deff do a video with the rod bearings and vanos. Its so in depth especially the vanos repair.
Man I just started watching your videos cuz I got me a 08 335i twin turbo & was ready to dump it to the trash, but by watching your channel and reading comments ima give this car a chance
Maintenance first! But does it last. You might want to swap out that mechanical fan before it takes out your radiator and hood. I'd suggest a good SPAL fan and a soft start pwm.
Rod bearings are pretty much a given maintenance item on N/A M cars. Just replace them every 100k and drive like normal. Don't forget to do any VANOS + VANOS line maintenance while you're interested there.
In regards to the interior trim. The clips should be put in the wrong way to fit in perfectly then you turn it to the correct position. I used scissors to fit inside the hole of the trim clips to turn it.
My rod bearings just blew in June (‘02). Like you said, destroyed my engine. I bought a new lower mileage M3 and swapped all the parts I had invested (thousands of dollars). The current car has 60K (other car had 150K).. I didn’t know that was an issue with these motors until it was too late. I’m still going to do the RBs for my own piece of mind in Summer 2021. You should see if your car had the rod bearing service done already. There was a complimentary recall from BMW. Just give your local BMW dealer a vin and they can look it up.
I thought it was e92 m3s and e60 m5 that had rod bearings problems? All I would do is put slightly thicker oil in it clean her up and drive it, high mileage just means keep up with services and let it warm up properly
Your right David i have had m3s 2 e46 and e93 verts only v10 and v8 had this issue - my friend owns a bmw garage he said the same i think its peoples anxiety being scared creating fear on all M engines

I see a lot of comments saying rod bearings. Vanos is just as important. I did the same thing with my M3 made it look good until something failed. I thought it was rod bearings so I went In checked them thank God it wasn't them .changed them anyway. In my case it was the vanos exhaust hub had a broken tab. If this happens it sounds like a spun Bearing. S54 engine is a legendary engine just have to know you way around it .to keep it running to the best level
Bro I'm telling you I've owned several e46 m3s the rod bearings don't go bad on them if you change the oil every 3-4 k miles. Obviously, eventually they will most likely go out but that is in the very high miles. The m3 that has the terrible rod bearing issue is the e92. People are very mistaken about the rod bearings on the e46s.
I'm literally at a BMW performance shop that deals with this issue all the time. Rod bearings issues is definitely a thing. Of course most engine self destruct because people failed to change the oil regularly and/or properly warm up the car before beating on it. But that doesn't change the fact that these engines need a bit more attention. Who knows how well the previous owners maintained this car.
@@VehicleVirals Yes I agree but also the rods are far more prevalent issue in the e92 m3s. The e46s, especially the later models, don't have nearly as bad rod bearings. I get why you went and did the job though. You are right you don't know how the previous owner treated the vehicle.
I am fairly certain that when ever you replace the spark plugs, you always replace all those gaskets. You know because they are 20 years old. Hint: All old E46 BMWs require lots of attention, all the plastics and rubber pieces are dry rotted.
Daily drove mine for two years for around 15k miles - before converting it to track car for 30+ Trackdays (see vids for the beating it took), the only issue I ever had was the plastic locating cup under the gear level failed, cost me £15 ($20) to replace..
Update the headlight cluster of this bad boy with some nice angle eyes, and wire them into the interior lights circuit so that they trigger when you unlock the car with your remote.
Not sure if it’s been done recently, but it would’ve been a good idea to check the valve clearances while you had the valve cover off. It’s very easy to check them. Maintenance first! Great looking car and awesome build! Almost makes me want one!
Sold my e46 M3. Miss it, but it was the right decision to sell as it would have been an expensive high milage car once you add in the cost of bearings, gaskets, bushings, coilovers, new wheels etc. For that money can buy a newer car with better performance.
It’s funny you said maintenance first two times in the video but you took care of installing an aftermarket suspension and wheels rather than changing bushings, tie rods, etc. Without mentioning the items like the rod bearings… suspension is always first cuz that wheel gap you know …😅
I don't know what year your car is. But at the 2003.5 mark BMW changed the rod bearings in all the S54 engines. So only cars that are older than that are at risk of Rod Bearing Failure. Other than what a normal high performance engine would need. Actually these engines if (as you have pointed out) maintenance is done as required run for hundreds of thousands of Miles without any serious problems. Of course you need to do the Vanos up dates but after that they are very good for longevity.
@@VehicleVirals Thank you for the kind reply to my comment. Well it's two years later since those comments and I'm very blessed to say my S54 is still going strong. I guess your BMW techs and you yourself have experienced this problem on this model of engine. I'm no expert and have only owned two N54's and one S54 so I don't have a vast amount of knowledge with them. It may be that it's a possible thing but not a for sure thing (Justifying a healthy concern for it happening to an expensive engine) as so many others have been driving these and dailying them as well as tracking them without experiencing that problem. At least not from many of the YTbers and myself (I daily mine and drive it like I stole it each and every time I have the chance LOL). But most all of them do agree that doing Blackstone oil testing is only wise and can let you know if you're going into deep waters on your Rod Bearings. Thank you again for your high quality and helpful videos!
Get an oil analysis from Blackstone every oil change (or even other oil change) for like $40.00 and they'll let you know if the rod bearings are going to fail on you.
Love the E46 M3 content and BMW content in general. I'm I the only one that thinks that those wheels don't don't do the M3 justice?🤔 it was better of rolling stock🤷🏾♂️
Not sure what year your m3 is. If you’re pre 3.5 they have more than likely been done by bmw per recall. If it’s after that time stamp you should have them done regardless. They are a 100k mile service per bmw along with vanos. Hope you can see this 👍🏻

Theres no BMW E46 M3 thats 3k USD thats a steal, period. The car, the platform, the engine are timeless and awesome. But I'd have literally 6-10k ready to drop on the car before I turned the wheel on a steal 3k USD M3. VANOS, subframe, rods is that almost, unless you have shop friends that can help you out. The car is amazing, and IMO if civics sounded anywhere near as good as the decatted S54, I'd buy one right now. Rasp is ///Motorsport, cest magnifique. Keep up the good work on the car, you'll realize whats what when you bang off the rev limited at 8,250 rpm.

Hello. About rod bearing, I noticed BMW recommend Castrol Edge 10-60 "Supercar" for M models. I just brought a E92 335i (you are for something in my choice ;) ) and the previous owner was using this oil. So you think it's a good idea to extend the rod bearing life ? Do guys at PSI, or you, are having experience with this oil on M and non M engines ? Thank you.
Unfortunately many people don’t seem to understand or care about this. We have many customers with s54 cars who we highly recommend getting black stone done because they are over mileage and STILL rather spend money on less important stuff. Highly stupid in my opinion. RB should be number 1. Then subframe if it hasn’t been done.

Maybe they’ll even sponsor you to do it
Wheels, tires, coilovers before spark plugs?
I would do an oil analysis and go from there on the rod bearings
Same issue here. Been sitting my E46 M3 since I got my Blackstone reading. Definitely do that first when buying an M3.
Wishing you better lucky this time around!
S54, S65 S85. All have the same issue.
@@VehicleVirals not so in the uk thats for sure all the e46s for sale here today not one has mentioned or added changed rods
All the v8 and v10 have a status as rods done or being done
Your worring for nothing but cant hurt to refresh things up
Check out evolve automotive M specialist hes of the same opinion matey
Have a great day
Interior clips are less stubborn when they're rotated 90° before installation then- "like a door key turn" rotated back 90° to lock into their respective slots.
I used to feed Shell to my S52 and constantly had knock due to carbon build up. Switched to Chevron and never had that problem again. My 2 cents....
I get that the aftermarket tires and wheels are performance upgrades however in terms of esthetics I prefer the stock wheels.
interestingly e90 330i's and 325i's do have metal valve covers, sucks they went with plastic afterwards
Without mentioning the items like the rod bearings… suspension is always first cuz that wheel gap you know …😅
A broke down ride is better than a dressed up walk!
You are so lucky to have a friend like Ali to help you out with the cars:)
Even after the updates, they still had clearance issues. Not as bad but still a thing.
Don't even waste money on these until you've done the bearings. If you take them off and they're "not bad" you've got lucky and get to keep your crank
well, if you are concerned about the valve cover gasket, Why not switch it out. You were 1/2 way there!
E46 M3 is the best looking M3 in my opinion
Should have done a valve adjustment while you had the valve cover open but them shims are annoying.
Get an oil analysis from Blackstone every oil change (or even other oil change) for like $40.00 and they'll let you know if the rod bearings are going to fail on you.
Rod bearings at the top of the list...after $4500 coilovers
I wish I had a good BMW shop like that around me to do some of my harder jobs. Not looking forward to working on my e90 turbos in the future.
Good shops are hard to come across. Best of luck with your car!
Love the m3, this is some quality content!
You can get your oil tested to see if rod bearings are an issue
Love the E46 M3 content and BMW content in general. I'm I the only one that thinks that those wheels don't don't do the M3 justice?🤔 it was better of rolling stock🤷🏾♂️
Not sure what year your m3 is. If you’re pre 3.5 they have more than likely been done by bmw per recall. If it’s after that time stamp you should have them done regardless. They are a 100k mile service per bmw along with vanos. Hope you can see this 👍🏻
I also highly recommend joining an e46 m3 group on Facebook in order to get more detailed info or even learn a thing or two
Get rid of that intake. Stock, Eventuri or CSL box are the only options. You lol notice the improved drive with those options
e30 update? That s54 build would have been something else, looking forward to more e46 content (and hopefully e30 content).
I love your M3! I had a 2004 Jet Black M3 stick shift with Dinan Cold Air Intake Exhaust system from the dealership ! I totally miss it 😬. This video brings me back to my younger days with my M3 that I leased for 4 years !! Thank you for sharing.
I miss driving mine, also haven’t driven mine due to rod bearings. My rod bearings were replaced under the recall but idk if those corrected the issue. Been too busy and it just sits looking pretty haha
bought my E46 M3 3 years ago with 199k... today it now has 211k great car when maint. is done!
Why do I think it’s going to be the airbags. I got an recall for the airbags and still need to get it done
Me too.
WOW,its been many moons back that the E46 has been in a vlog.always enjoy seeing content of this Beemer.
Both matter, but I prioritize performance first, aesthetics second.
Maintenance first...buys 7k work of non maintenance parts.
Nice video dude. I am going to continue watching to live out my passion vicariously through you to secure an older gen m3 as a project / track car!
Great video Christian. Take the 335 to a car meet and get some video of different cars
They need to start a heritage models part system like Nissan
Awesome video I just swapped an e46 rear end into my GTO and am looking up suspension parts thx subscribed
4:44 omg that’s my car😁
I have a 2006 330xi . it was taken care of by the last owner, I am very happy with it . what do you guys say about the 330i or 330xi .
...ok...second...
Ohhh, my! An E60 Baby! 15:51
Great Stuff!
#SquadetteOutForNow
Me: HAHA she still has the shift paddles!!
Also me but 3 sec later: Oh so you mention it......
Just came across a 2002 6speed m3 that’s been “total loss” bc a fender bender but no “frame damage” for stupid cheap. Been watching videos debating if it’s worth it. Thanks
Thank you.
Always do RB first. No sense spending $4500 on suspension when $1900 can save you the anxiety of losing the engine.
If it’s pre 04 call bmw dealer ask them to check for rod bearing recall history
