    I have mirrorless and translucent Sony cameras, but I keep coming back to the A100. Better battery life, easy to negotiate menu and a much better feel. The images have a far more pleasing look to them compared to the newer sensors. As for noise, if you know your camera it's not an issue.

      Body design seems nicer on these cameras, it's quite a natural look to images so like it, others prefer more punch. Down to personal preference. I like using OVF cameras to be honest, so do many

    Good review! My first DSLR. Great camera, nice look to the images, similar to KM (for obvious reasons). Whilst the noise at higher ISOs is definitely there its also somewhat 'film like'. I still use mine for M42 lenses with a cheap adapter. Works great!

      I would avoid JPEG at ISO 1600 as the images are not good (colour at least), the 10MP sensor is alright, but perhaps not as good as the 6MP one for high ISO, but for outside/details of course it's a better offering. I did a 3 way test showing same, and the actual exposure on the KM5D was notably higher even with identical lens/exposure.
      Look is more neutral on the A100 v the A200 and KM5D

    Good thing the in body stabilization helps you avoid the higher ISO although ISO 800 is fairly tolerable and with current software most of the noise can probably be negated. Will be testing this on a used A100 soon myself hopefully.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  6 місяців тому +1

      You can use ISO 1600, but forget the JPEGs because the saturation is so low. It is quite noisy, yet I have to compare it to the A200 and KM5D because what each camera rates as ISO 800 or ISO 1600, are not the same. A100 isn't a camera for those who do a lot of low light, unless you have fast lenses.

      Try it the Sigma is good, yet it is also fun to revisit these older cameras. I still get a kick out of taking photos with them, helps to focus on the result, not the technology (it's a fairly basic camera in many ways)

      @@MrBazReviews Will do. I am also considering the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F2.8, and saw your review of this lens. It's significantly cheaper, smaller and lighter, though certainly not a good as the Sigma.

    A100 was my first DSLR. I no longer have it but it was a great camera. I have mirrorless E-mounts but the bigger A-mount bodies are just better if you have lots of A-mount glass, particularly how they feel in the hands. So I'll probably not give up the A-mount bodies even if I upgrade to the latest with better support for autofocus. I may even go backwards to pickup something with OVF again since all I have now are SLT's.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  5 місяців тому +1

      I like using the older bodies, they have a certain simplicity about them - they feel like cameras not computers (sort of!). Yes the body size is an issue on some mirrorless cameras, maybe they went too small with ergonomics and handling. I continue to like using an OVF camera too, perhaps having a choice is good. Shame A mount didn't continue with some OVF models, A900 Mk II etc. I had the A99 but never quite got used to the EVF.

    • @gregkempchannel
      @gregkempchannel 5 місяців тому

      @@MrBazReviews I did enjoy my a100 but my personal favorite from around that time was a700 (never owned a850/900). I bought the a55 SLT as soon as it was on preorder, I wanted to know if I should jump from Sony or if it would work for me. I have had a bunch of cameras, couldn't name them all probably, but the a55 I still have and still use even though I have others that are much higher end. I was able to get used to EVF pretty quickly, but I also followed the ongoing debate/rants people had back then over the loss of OVF. I understand though enjoying the simplicity of older cameras.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  5 місяців тому +1

      @@gregkempchannel I heard the A700 didn't sell well, but I might try one a friend has the camera. I did use a few SLT ones, A57/65/77 and did a video on the a99. I have to be honest whilst I liked the a99, the D800 is a better camera, having shot with both for extended times. a99 AF was pretty good on accuracy, but so few AF points was an obvious mistake.
      a77 suffered with the SLT low light, I have mixed feelings on SLT/EVF, I can use it but I just was more than happy to use an OVF. A900 had a really good OVF too, might do a video on that some time! Some of the older cameras are fun to use

    • @gregkempchannel
      @gregkempchannel 5 місяців тому

      @@MrBazReviews Nothing wrong with having a different opinion on what works for you. Do try the a700 if you get a chance, that's one I might reacquire. I thought long and hard about switching from Sony, because its not just the camera really the investment is in the glass. The SLT's gave new flexibility, by shooting from the LCD screen I could place the camera any where for perspective without my eye behind it. I was doing a lot of event photography so that let me quickly get shots that would be harder to setup with an OVF. I should also mention, on the a55 I don't really use the tiny EVF, I bought a tool called LCDVF which turns the LCD screen into a giant EVF. I do have the a99 and really enjoy it, I don't know what I'm missing on other systems I'm not vested in, but I have no doubt that Sony still had not caught up to Nikon by that point. I think Sony knew they wanted to push toward all mirrorless so each gen was a step toward that, and now here we are, for better or worse. I do agree that the low light hit with the SLT is frustrating at best, however I learned to get really good at denoising and could get it to look almost like film grain using Lightroom and Topaz at the time, even the a55 produced many of my best low light (ISO3200 typically) shots I've ever taken. The mirrorless bodies at the time were the ideal candidates for infrared, another obsession of mine, I have a NEX-5 and NEX-7 converted for it. I have a bunch of Minolta AF glass that's perfect for infrared and good for regular photography. I do wish Sony had continued to make OVF cameras longer and I keep thinking it would be cool to have an a900 which I missed out on. Technologically the newest cameras are amazing, but I do think they take some of the joy out of photography by making it too easy. Sorry that's a long comment, I should make my own videos on this stuff!

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  5 місяців тому +1

      @@gregkempchannel Interesting thoughts, I think for me I like the choice, I see the EVF advantage, but also feel a disconnect at times too, that is solved with an OVF.
      My interest was mostly as a Minolta user, I did try the adapters and E mount, but never really found what I wanted, and lost the video AF on the new adapter (I sort of need AF for videos)
      I had the A77 and that struggled in low light, hard to work with over ISO 1600, even though I felt the body was pretty good overall.
      A99 solved that, but looking more closely and comparing it to the 24mp APS-C cameras, you get the same low light performance, almost identical not the full frame experience on that side. Though the dynamic range was excellent and competitive, liked the GPS built in.
      Sony's direction just departed my own, I wanted a new A700 and A900 OVF option, which never arrived, I didn't want to be pushed into using EVF only, I was OK with it as an option or on some bodies.
      So I wandered a bit to the D800 and D780, and found mostly what I wanted, of course Nikon have their own quirks too. D780 I would say is significantly better in low light v the A99, the SLT compromise did hit a bit at times.
      I don't enjoy auto everything cameras, I have grown quite fond of the D800 the output off that camera is sensational, for some reason it's just like warm honey lol. I use it more than the D780 for photos.
      The D780 is really what Sony could have made for A Mount a modern DSLR with good AF live view, but there are a few things I'd change.
      My Minolta stuff some is still here, I might even look at some SR/MD things later on. Always liked Minolta not scared to try new things, I wish they were still around.

I am more tolerant of noise then some, but yes the A100 isn't the best in low light as we can see with the results here. The Fuji super CCD was useful, and also the EXR sensor later on, I used a few with those sensors and they did well for dynamic range. The High 200 mode does work well for Raw shooting same for the KM5D. I have a 3 way comparison I am working on A100/200/KM5D soon I have done some after I finish a few more videos!

    Thanks. I never warmed to the Sony A100 either ......the pictures just weren't as warm as those from the Konica Minolta 5D.
    The other problem I had with it was that when I used the little flash on top, exposure was all over the place - sometimes okay, sometimes way under exposed. The KM5D never did that.

    • @MrBazReviews
      @MrBazReviews  6 місяців тому

      I don't use the flash much, but the 5D seems more accurate with the onboard flash, there is a known issue with bounce flash over exposure on the 5D, that wasn't fixed, but it can be worked around (just use the flash exp comp). A100 I think looks less interesting by default, suppose it is down to preference. I'll look into this in a later video comparing the 3 models

      I was just using the A100 flash indoors at a birthday party. I couldn't believe the variability between good and bad.
      Also, I remember lots of talk at Dpreview when the A100 came out that it didn't have a certain filter on the sensor (anti-aliasing maybe?) resulting in it being the sharpest of the 10 Mpixel cameras around at the time. But, I didn't have any other 10 Mpixel cameras, so couldn't verify.

      @@The157ra Once I've done a few more videos on other items, I'll come back to the A100 and do a 3 way video A100, A200 and 5D so I can compare them properly. Maybe the A100 does have a lighter AA filter I'll find out when I test it, but I can say right now the KM5D gives the most exposure at identical shutter speeds, this is why it's known for better high ISO performance too. But I will do some testing properly, also want to make it a discussion about differences not as technical. A200 was OK but they chopped it down a bit too much, so I kept 2 x KM5D bodies. A100 was too expensive v the 5D's when it came out, and the high ISO isn't great - so I skipped it.
