- Teenagers under 16 years old will be banned from using Tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram, X and Reddit under the new world first laws introduced into our Parliament today.
The Government wants the law to pass next week, with social media platforms to face fines of up to $50-million if they don't comply.

For all you non-Australians, you will notice that in the vast majority of Australian political issues on youtube, the "comments are turned off....what does that tell you????????
Same in Canada
Says they see no point in having dumb comments from dumb people......
Because of idiots.
I understand it's due to a high court ruling which laid out media companies (later, I expect, individuals, too) are liable for libelous comments made on pages they manage. That it had a chilling effect on many meaningful avenues of public forum was a contemptible side effect. The man who brought his case deserved his justice, I just wish it didn't have to cost us this.
Media outlets in Australia have a legal responsibility to manage comments on their social media posts, so it's easier for them to simply disable comments.
Not about protection it's about the digital ID they are introducing.
Duh we already have digital ID in australia
@@strathjackprivateIt’s voluntary so far. But what’s more concerning is introducing it for employers to access, rather than emailing them Id etc directly. Because if it’s all in a place where employers can access it then so can hackers. And much more likely to hack something that stores millions of people’s f I D and pirate information. No doubt employers would have in their ad, please provide your digital I D, to make it easier for them and because many employers are looking for people who blindly comply with no questions asked.
lines up with the misinformation BILLshyte as well
What are you dummies talking about, the new Digital ID coming means LESS companies will have to store your ID docs. It's also not mandatory...
and eventually a tyrannical social credit system
X and Quarden Token are going to be merged. Easiest money in my life

kids are smarter than adults when it comes to hacking. they will find their way in, just like the ants find their way inside my honey jar
No kids are not smarter than the experts and The same with their older brothers and sisters who think they're smarter than the expert's just lots of dumb people being manipulated by the Internet
I can see a huge increase in VPNs being used by Australians, just like the Chinese do
Theres mention of VPN's on the chopping block too
Quarden Token is easily going to hit $1 this month
Quarden Token will go 100x after launch on Binance
Because of a few all will suffer. My heart goes out to the children who have taken their lives over social media/bullying. But it's the parents job not the Governments.
It starts from the top.
It put more strain on parents, when parents are struggling with food, housing and basic living pressures.
Musk don't care for your kid, he sees dollar signs and having the reputation of being the wealthiest man. Not biggest hearted man.
And the parents are obviously failing for years.. are you blind?
No Consent to your digital identification for my family thanks. Not sure who you think you are anymore?
We did not agree to this. Parents have this responsibility not Government. You are overreaching your jurisdiction.
You still have the option to set up an account you verify and give your kid access to it.
Parents should be controlling their childrens internet access. And having conversations about social media platforms and etc. Its easy enough to do.
but the parents are Australians....
@@Hangover-ry9bo what do you mean by that??
Have you met parents?
Totally agree. The state is imposing itself upon the rights of parents ( and responsibities) empowering themselves whilst giving even greater powers to Foreign entities to govern the interests and activities of Australians on line. It's a total betrayal by the uniparty.
@redhammer9910 you obviously don't have children locked in their rooms, not wanting to go out into the world, because it's turned into a mean and violent place. Stop thinking about your rights, thinks about your children's rights to grow up without harassment from keyboard bullies.
Highly likely there will be partnerships between X or Tesla with Quarden Token
Robots advertising products this is why we need to stop the Internet in its tracks
If I were a parent, I would just not give my child a smartphone. Problem solved.
Agreed 100000000000000000%
You can still access social media through android, so smartphone or not, makes no difference. It's either no phone at all, or age restrictions.
@@roslynjonsson2383no its not 😂
You can control what your kids do if youre not terrible at parenting.
“Its either we lock the alcohol in the vault or the kids are going to get wasted when we’re at work”

@@liammorgans7329 You obviously don't have kids. You also need to stop living in fantasy land, if you for 1 second believe a parent can control a kids phone. It takes kids less than 5 mins to break through the parental security codes. The kids have been able to break those codes for the last 10yrs. Which is why it's now got to be the government who puts limits, through the website itself
You very obviously don't have kids, and need to stop living in fantasy land. Kids learnt how to break through all the parental security codes nearly 10years ago.
When your kids go to friends, school, anywhere out of the home, they are out of all parental controls, and to deny that is just kidding yourself. You've also forgotten what you, and every other kid, got up to behind mum and dads back, especially around ages 13 to 15.
Unless you want to lock the kids up, and never allow them to go out anywhere without you, then you're kidding yourself.
Sounds like another misinformation billshyte to me

Quarden Token has two of the largest Tesla shareholders already; most likely something is coming
And what has that got to do with the internet grooming children
The owner of a social media site doesn't want less people on social media??? Crazy..

I want to know how they would verify their age? Who would decide how to do this age verification? Potential to impact all of us.
It will require all users to have to prove their age/identity.
Yes. A digital identity. Think China, North Korea
Musk is correct.
You know kids can't just sign up to betting platforms or order alcohol online etc right?
@@ShadowAussie
You don't know the teens I know.
Corruption too much control.
Welcome to China's National Security law in Australia!
The rush to push through draconian bills before end of year.
Just a couple to mention are the misinformation and disinformation bill, the social media ban for under 16's that will enable the governments digital ID and the use of face recognition/bio metrics on all aged Australians on a daily basis to access social media platforms.
So how exactly can Australia impose a fine on an overseas social media site and force them to pay? Short answer is they can't. Their jurisdiction and power to tell companies what they have to do ends at their border. They can issue all the fines they want, but they have no power to enforce them or collect them.
Exactly, it is a joke, and these companies will hold our Govt up in court for years fighting these fines and guess who will foot that bill....
I imagine they would enforce it by blocking access to the servers / services if they do not comply with the laws. Similar to how there was the court hearing with the Facebook (Meta) and TikTok CEO on data privacy laws in the US. They threatened to ban tiktok in the entire country if US citizens data was being stored on Chinese soil. This is just the opposite of that. Now Australia wants the companies to capture our IDs. This bill passing is a major step backwards for our society.
@@TheOzStu one world government
Most of them are registered in Australia so they can. I'd assume continuous failure to pay would ultimately lead to ISP's being ordered to block them.
Kids don't use Facebook!
This is unacceptable, a total act of control . These teens will hit the streets and crimes will skyrocket.
Cant wait to see the 12yo resistance, marching down the streets with their plastic minecraft swords 😆
No no no no
They want this for very bad reasons
Originally I was supportive of this proposal, until I realise that they would require companies to take our identities, resulting in us being able to be doxxed and monitored more readily. The only model that sustainable therefore is a ban on parents allowing their children to have access to the Internet and a ban on the children themselves, rather than on the companies.
It'd become a huge beacon for hackers - what a gold mine for identity thieves
💯
All of your info is already online, what do you think MyGov is? Your ID is already digital and you have to share it with companies all the time eg to access pubs/clubs, own a credit card etc. Also, social media companies already know everything about you, even if you haven't signed up to their service. It's called shadow profiling, look it up.
I expect that there's some third-party identity buying/selling companies out there who are really eager to do business with the government and social companies. A man can only consume so many fruit baskets before the digestion objects. It does provoke speculation as to whether they have plumbers on retainer at parliament.
So you think letting kids have free reign on social media is less likely for harvesting their data? 😂
Elon can you help us get he out 🙏🏼
Several apps are available for parents to do this already but morons want the " big bro gov " to do it
Government unaware of UA-cam shorts lol
UA-cam shorts is different tho and safe for kids
This is what happens when a country doesn't have a Bill Of Rights/Charter Of Rights. Australia is one of the only western countries that doesn't have one, even New Zealand has one. Three Australian states have some form of bill/charter of human rights. Victoria did this in 2006......but you see what happened during C-19. As a founding signatory of the UN, you would think that Australians would be covered by the UN Charter Of Human Rights, but it seems the Government (politicians, police, courts, etc) don't seem to uphold our rights under it. Just look at the Christmas Island fiasco on living conditions of asylum seekers. There has been a push for one for many years, but not many people seem to be interested.....I think that may change.
great idea but the way they want to implement it (and they've spoken it about before) is by making everyone get a digital passport
Did the people ask for this? Or is the government deciding on what we can and cannot do with our children? Social media is still young, so where is the data to show that there is a significant negative impact on children aged 16 and under?
They are concerned socials are exposing the youth to conservative ideals earlier than usual. It's all about voting.
not really paying attention are you.
@ about?
Don't forget about yourself - ID please if you want to use the internet
Not about protection it's about the digital ID they are introducing.
A Christmas wish for a few parents and a Christmas disaster for Australia
Still allowed on google says it all. Orwell.
Yes, totally!
Where are the parents?? Why do kids need social media. Generations lived very well and socially with only a radio or a TV.
This legislation has ‘zero’ to do with banning kids from social media- it’s about collecting the personal data and identifying data from adults.. for the purposes of holding adults accountable for any comments the gov in power determines to be ‘misinformation’ - ie. something they don’t want you to say.
They are Australians, saying 'the Government should' 5 times a week, for 20 years.
@@kevinfinnan this is exactly what the entire bill is about.
I don’t need a TV either. TV began the brain rot with the boomer generation.
@@kevinfinnan 2+2=5
nice they are banning literally the apps I don’t ever use c:
Really is about the children or is it about the money they want to make from the fines plus it's not platforms it's technology itself if schools and parents introduce children to tablets from young age what do they expect they basically opening the window to them with the technology now they want to restrict them from it and blame social platforms
How will they ever control this? Next thing will be digital ID and this is a very dangerous thing
as if anyone gives a damn what either of these people say ? lol..
Australia trusts government which was never the case pre c21
Let parents control this, it's not for a government to decide. Instead work on education for parents. Parents can choose to ban social media for their children whenever they want, parents are the ones BUYING THEM PHONES. It's ridiculous, take accountability.

I kinda saw that coming.
But let’s be real; if he’s for “free speech”, why is he restricting what is considered the “truth” on Twitter?
Michelle Rowlands should be summarily sacked. Just another of Albanese's ratbag Ministers. Why are kids permitted to take mobile phones to school? Seven hours of phone-free time is the obvious place to start weening youngsters off these addictive devices.
Don’t forget ‘Lynette’s Law’.
I deleted snapchat because of the constant schoolgirls from 13 to 16 asking to PayID them for photos. Sick World
You can bet these teens in 2 yeaes time WILL NOT be voting Labor.

@ Elon Musk has allowed a diversity of opinions on X. Freedom of speech is in desperate need of saving because Aussie simpletons lack basic pattern recognition skills. At least US has been saved.
it's not about saving young people, it's about controlling everyone's social media usage;
Think about when that person turns 16 and they're just given the keys to social media - completely unaware
Social media companies, if they don't simply just leave the Australian market, will have no incentive to put in protections for young people, so those that will subvert the controls (and they will), will be even more vulnerable;
AND WHY REDDIT?
Why not go back to the app development the government did for parents to help control their kids usage?
No way I am giving my passport or license to Facebook or X for it to just get leaked (and yes, it is being put back onto the platforms to manage) in the next targeted attack
I honestly can't use google anymore without tagging reddit at the end of every question. Reddit is a hub of peer reviewed information and free speech. There is no bullying effecting children on that site. I think this bill is a huge step backwards in protecting children online. There is far better ways of doing it.
@@nightpixel24 💯 agree
Platforms would not have direct access to your ID info for verification, they would check against a third party age verification service that basically issues a token to confirm if you are eligible. Also it's always interesting to see people get super worried about their data being leaked but don't care when social media platforms literally farm every little bit of personal info they can possibly squeeze from you 24/7. TikTok for example is basically chinese spyware.
@@YuuToobz But then how would platforms enforce it?
Who writes that 3rd party token? It'd have to be the social media platforms - especially if they're the ones being fined if they don't enforce it
And leaning into your points, I am worried about data being leaked and farmed - including more personal data; verification makes it even riskier.
It also goes into the misinformation and disinformation bill;
While it seems super genuine - laws that are passed without a proper scope, people should see massive red-flags
@@guitaroso Plenty of ways to enforce compliance, they already do some of it so it just needs to be expanded. The third party for verification can be anyone and would be independent from the platform. It's not being implemented for a year specifically so platforms have time to sort that out. If you were, you would never use any social media in the first place, and would be vehemently against kids going anywhere near it.
