  • Episode 14, Season 2 of Reveal New Zealand from the East Coast of the South Island - welcome to Kaikoura! We're checking out some accommodation at the camping ground, the seal colony and of course crayfish tasting in Kaikoura is a... ✪ Take a look at campervan options for your trip here - www.motorhomerepublic.com
Welcome to Kaikoura, New Zealand. In Maori Kai translates to food and koura to crayfish, so there's no awards for guessing what we wanted to do crack into. You don't have to search deep around what to do in Kaikoura before crayfish pops up. Also on that list is seeing the incredible seal colony along the main highway!
After checking into our accommodation, the Top 10 camping ground, we woke up early to make our way to Nins Bin for a crayfish breakfast. Nins Bin is a world famous in New Zealand, 40+ year old, third-generation, food truck specialising in all things crayfish - not only that, but the setting is amazing as well!
Just around the coast is Ohau lookout over a seal colony that is just far too easy to reach, it's literally next to the road but home to hundreds of seals including seal pups! Seeing the seals playing around in the waves, acting all cheeky like and cuddling with their parents was so amazing to watch.
Overall Kaikoura is a stunningly beautiful place and would be pretty special in winter, the mountains form the backdrop and with a sprinkle of snow up there it would pretty special!
Kaikoura is also known for it's whale watching, in the next episode we'll take a boat tour in search of finding some new friends diving around out there.

Went to Kaikora on our NZ trip a few years ago and they'd parked shipping containers at the bottom of hillsides to stop any rock falls after the earthquake as it was still unstable. Good to see the road finished. To say the crayfish was a bit expensive is an understatement.

Thank you for showcasing my 2nd home soooo well! We own the original homestead in Goose Bay which is 10 minutes south of kaikōura township. Looks like you had amazing weather! The waterfall where the seal pups used to hang out was a very sad loss.. It was so cool to watch them play under the waterfall and so beautiful. The earthquake was a challenging time for us and were heartbroken with the devastation that it caused. Thankfully kaikōura is now coming back to life! The Pier Hotel is such a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the view. The coastal road of kaikōura is so unique and beautiful. Glad you enjoyed your stay 😊

At 10.21 you can see behind you the tunnels that allow the seals to still go upto the waterfall. It is all sealed off (haha) to the public, but back in the day when humans were allowed up there it was truly an amazing site. The Waterfall pond was absolutely full of baby seals everywhere. So when you were saying "I don't know where the waterfall is", it was right behind you as you said that! haha

Question though - are the conversion prices right for the Nins bin? Or is it a per person price if there's 2 people for that tail?
Been watching all your videos (seriously awesome and both my partner and I have gone to a few places on our road trip cos we saw it on your videos) and every other one seems to be a per item price.

Well, if that don't make you wanna go road trippin', nothing will (gold standard weather and all!)
That waterfall (which acted as a seal nursery) was about 400m up 'Ohau Stream', over your right shoulder in the background. I've been there pre-earthquake watching them play, about 20 of them leaping and jumping, it's quite the sight. Google Ohau stream seals.

No knife and fork, that is the way to go. Meanwhile, your crayfish are huge! Almost like little lobsters. I think they are called rock lobsters here in the U.S. Our crayfish are teeny tiny...and from freshwater.

I do enjoy crayfish, and eating it a few meters from where it is caught, with the smell of the ocean in the air, all adds to the experience. But it is possibly the most overrated food in the world for the price! In saying that, you can’t not have crayfish in Kaikōura!

    • @DanegerAndStacey

What a robbery, complete rip off. Boring and plain. I paid $70 for a stringy not properly cooked tail and didn't even include sides. I also had to pay extra for the garlic butter and lemon. This should be boycotted.
