I think it's funny that you work all day on cars, then go home and watch Ivan work on cars. I bet Ivan does the same thing with your channel. Both channels are top notch.
Love that you actually did a full diagnosis rather than throw a part at it. Outstanding explanation and walk thru of the inner workings of the whole circuit and process. Great example of going the extra mile and showing the full scan results, illustrating the circuit and talking it thru along with service bulletin. Haven't seen your stuff before, but will definitely subscribe follow and like. Thanks for creating the video. Very helpful video. I have a similar issue with a 98 Chevy c 2500. Four-wheel drive that is stuck in 4 wheel high motor engages on the transfer case but immediately disengages. I don't want to do what most people do it just start throwing parts at it. I've tried everything I could possibly do mechanically myself. I have no broken wires no frayed wires.
FYI if your trans fails to shift and seems stuck in low range on your 99-03 Chevy/GMC check the 2 wire connector on your transfer case and see if its shorting together it will save you 2700 dollars for a new transfer case and transmission! 5.3 with 4l60e
Thanks for the video. I have a 2007 avalanche with 190,000 miles. The dash is going haywire intermittently and saying service 4wd. I think that its the ground or the actuator. Thanks for some insight. You are definitely a great mechanic, only wish I could find one like you around me in NJ. But until then Ill need to be a hands on owner. Thanks again and keep up the good work.👍
Did you ever find out what the problem is ? My 09 Silverado 1500 I replaced the front differential actuator and the 4x4 started working again then after a couple weeks the lights on the dial weren't lighting up so I replaced the shift dial because it seemed loose and the trucks got 200+ thousand miles on it and then the lights came back on for the dial and it would shift from 2x4 to 4x4 then after a couple weeks again no power to the shift dial with no lights on the dial . So I replaced the transfer case actuator and now I get this big red N at the far right of the dial but that's it . I checked all the fuses under the fuse box under the hood and everything checked out good with no blown fuses at all . I had read that I'm supposed to put the transfer case in neutral before bolting on the new actuator but that doesn't make sense being most of the time when the transfer case actuator goes bad the trucks in 2wd and when I bought the new actuator there were no instructions at all saying anything about this . I've checked all the grounds and cleaned the wires going to the frame and other locations and used anti seize on them once tightened then sprayed paint on them to help seal it more and still nothing . The pins in the wire harness looked good no corrosion but I can't tell if those pins got pushed back like he was saying in the video and unfortunately I can't do a probe with my fluke to do continuity tests on the pins because GM made the pins so small I can't get my test pins for my Fluke to get into the harness pins to do the test . The wiring on these trucks is absolutely piss poor as far as how small the wires are that get brittle and crack in the insulation and cause all kinds of problems not to mention all of the body modules that these trucks have that do go bad and cause issues as well .
The best place to start is checking the grounds. There's one under the driver. And then there's one on the firewall in front of the passenger. That ground has a mega fuse, a plastic cover covers it. I've taken that off and sanded down to bare metal. My gauges started working properly after that. It's been awhile and the issue hasn't resurfaced. Good luck. Let me know
Meh. My 2000 f150 linkage rusted up, to the point the knob pulled off and I smacked myself solidly in the chin. Took me hours to get it loosened up. (Deep Creep finally prevailed). Both have their issues.
Well, everyone wants things automated so they no longer have to think or make decisions, so you need things to be electrical to do that.... Never mind that you can't set a trouble code for a mechanical operation with some electricals.
And here's the predictable comment(s) lamenting that modern cars are simply too difficult to understand and that anyone who likes their modern conveniences is just a simple dolt who can't be bothered to perform some other perfunctory operation(s). Oh, the irony ingrained in such comments! I will take my modern vehicle full of convenience, luxury, and reliability over your vintage, polluting, inefficient death traps any day of the week.
Eric O does it again. I especially like how he had the previous video with the similar issue it shows that his way of testing narrows it down to the actual problem. My wife’s friend has a Rouge with a bunch of systems not working correctly been to an indi and sent to dealer, all I could think of was Eric O he would find the bad ground.
At least the "ding-dong" verifies his work. That virtually assures no come-backs. It separates the men from the boys & the technicians from the parts changers.
Ford and GM has had t-case motors forever and none of them ever last very long. The only thing that a transfer case should be shifted by is a linkage connected to a lever inside the vehicle.
3 years ago the range actuator motor on my 2005 Silverado stopped working, gave it a few taps with a hammer and it's been working ever since. Should have tried the hammer tap to see if it worked, just to satisfy our curiosity.
Eric your a dang detective brother. I want to let you know, your efforts showed me how limited my BlueDriver diagnostic tool was in many ways. well, we all know the tap tappy on a starter motor shade tree engineering solution, why not on a t-case motor! booo for not trying it live! lol nice job as always!
It looks easy when you know what you are doing. Someone gave me a free Saturn coupe today because it won't run and she got a newer car. I have previously jumped started it for her so I suspect an electrical problem. It is old, no air conditioning and burns oil but I need vehicles to practice on and I have plenty of parking so It will only cost me a tow bill. The battery appears to be ok (12.7) but I will need to do a battery load test when I get her home. Depending on what I find out it will become a spare vehicle, or I will call Pick n Pull to come and get it. Either way it is a win. I have been watching Eric for quite a while so decided to give it a go. The best part is it is not a rust bucket and the transmission shifts.
Those encoder Motors are a common problem I believe, out of the blue mine went out while driving down the highway. Didn't even get a check engine light although this was in a 2002 1500 HD.

As always, great stuff, Eric. Thanks as always. Going to take my accumulated knowledge to diagnose a friend's crank-no-start this afternoon. Wish me luck 😄
As always, great work and skills Eric. my issue is different in that my 07 Avalanche shifts to 4HI and 4L, and all works (tested it on 4 jacks and watched the engagement/disengagement of front axle) and in the snow) but the lights are always flashing in the selected gear. checked all connectors, and grounds, cleaned up grounds. front actuator works when pulled and watched, t case motor responds to command (could hear it). it has electric knob. NP8 t-case . does this mean something is failing but not completely allowing the 4wd to shift etc.. and a matter of time before complete failure?
I'd like to see video's on walking through the diagnostic process with one of those code readers that you can buy for less than $50. I frequently seem to take forever drilling down to the problem although I only work on my cars and trucks so I don't have any professional experience.
It's about impossible to do this with a cheap code reader on these trucks because of the extensive amount of wiring and all the body modules these use and of course if you don't have a good wiring schematic it would take you forever and you'd probably still not figure it it out because everything in these trucks is run by computers and modules . There are so many fuses and relays on these all over besides what's under the dash and hood it's ridiculous. I just went under the hood on my 09 Silverado and popped the cover off the fuse box on the driver's side and 1 atza time pulled each fuse and cleaned them and checked them to make sure they weren't bad the used some stuff called Deoxit that's mainly used for cleaning out corrosion in volume pots and fader sliders on mixing boards to cleans the corrosion out and seals them so it cant corrode again and it took me about a hour and a half to do each 1 including the relays and 4 pin 40 amp fuses and spraying the Deoxit into each fuse receptacle and inserting and pulling the fuse out multiple times just to scrub any corrosion out and make a better contact then flushing the crud out with more Deoxit. The stuff works great and you don't need a lot of it to work but it's kind of expensive for what size can you get but it does work . It's been around for over 60 years and is mainly used in radio stations and recording studios to maintain the volume balance tone bass pots and fader and sliders used on mixing boards and if course guys who play electric guitars use it on there volume pots and tone pots as well as on the amplifiers pots switches etc. I figured since my truck is old and I live in rural WI where we get alt of snow and salt is used it probably is a good idea to do this so those fuses are making full contact and not getting corroded up and failing . You can find this stuff on eBay and probably Amazon but I found it on a place called Amplified parts who sells it also for guys like me who work on our own guitars and amplifiers besides trying to work on our own vehicles.
I have to say, Eric is the guy I want fixing my vehicle generally...but if I was beating the outback into submission with a 4WD, I want Ivan to come along for the ride. A "no-parts fix" doesn't always work for long, but when you're stuck 500 km from cell service and 1000k from civilization (for a given value of "civilization"), you only need it to last _just long enough._ 😃
When testing, instead of using the 4amp light, could you have front probed a DVM and watch the positive voltage go negative when switching (or visa versa)?
@@mattmanyam agreed. If you really wanted to be sure then just test both. You could even do it at the same time if the test light pins are long enough.
Using the test light confirms that the circuit is capable of supplying a decent load (like what the motor would draw). The meter will show you voltage but you can get tricked using a meter because it could have loose connection to where it'll show voltage on a meter but when you go to put a load on it then it won't work because of the voltage lost through the loose connection.

UPDATE: new 4wd Actuator (one in the front diff) from RockAuto fixed the problem.
Big Eric! You are the MAN! GREAT JOB WITH THE VIDEOS! WE ALL LOVE THEM!!
Gotta love GM. They're the bread and butter for mechanics like Mister O. They're breaking all the time!
Awesome presentation with humor
I have to say, Eric is the guy I want fixing my vehicle generally...but if I was beating the outback into submission with a 4WD, I want Ivan to come along for the ride. A "no-parts fix" doesn't always work for long, but when you're stuck 500 km from cell service and 1000k from civilization (for a given value of "civilization"), you only need it to last _just long enough._ 😃
Trust me... Off camera... I'm the guy you want 😏
As always I have a question and your there thanks man love the content
Hey Ivan, Eric O has to stand behind his work, he says, so he can't do those no parts required fixes. Sounds like fightin' words to me. :)
10:11 we need one of those office depot easy buttons but with eric's voice saying "well that was easy!" when you hit it
this reminds me of a channel i used to watch few yrs ago - Schrodingers Box
When testing, instead of using the 4amp light, could you have front probed a DVM and watch the positive voltage go negative when switching (or visa versa)?
Yes, but that doesn't verify the capability of the circuit to deliver the current required to run the motor, while the 4 amp test light does.
@@mattmanyam agreed. If you really wanted to be sure then just test both. You could even do it at the same time if the test light pins are long enough.
Ideally youd want both, using a light verifies the circuit holds a load in some cases you would not be able to see with a test light or multimeter
And not just any test light! Lol it’s gotta be a 4.02 ampere 12.8V bulb 😆 but seriously a 1 watt bulb probably won’t load the circuit like the motor.
