Yes, those were Portuguese ships, being that Portugal was the first European Power (and the most powerful navy in the world at the time) to reach Asia by sea. While also being the first to set foot in places like India, China, Japan and much more, way before any other western kingdom. You can tell by the Templar Order of Christ cross on the sails.

I wonder how Ubisoft will conclude Yasuke’s story after Oda’s assassination during the Honnoji incident. Historically there are two stories which is still widely disputed today. Maybe that’s Akechi Mitsuhide being murdered after he betrayed Oda. He was assassinated in a bamboo forest by bandits while he was retreating from Toyotomi.

as far as I can tell from what I remember and have looked up (being honest there)
Yasuke (his Japanese name) was never granted the role of a Samurai, BUT was made into a personal bodyguard and then close attendent of Oda Nobunaga. He never covered him up because he was a extremely rare site (a man of his skin complication was not thought to really exist in (at least) central Japan). He then got elevated and was given a house, some land, some servants, and a stipen as he would be officially hired as a court retainer. We don't know what happened AFTER Oda Nobunaga died to him; he could have went back with the jessuets, he could have headed westard and settled outside of town (not really likely), he could also have become just a minor pirate, we really don't know EXACTLY what happened except one thing; he did live after Oda died.
Further, Ubisoft is not really a good company anymore and well probably make this game with dozens of DLC or some other thing that makes it a 5/10 at best (in my opinion). I mean, the saying is "Dont Pre-Order" because of what they did last time. ALSO, more then likely they did alter the story to fit more modern sensibilities. I would have likes it if the Samurai noted in the Trailer was actually just straight up a hard core villain and was the main bad guy OR the sub-main bad guy...instead of making him a good guy. The story is more-then likely going to suffer from being bland.

No idea where you are getting all of this fanfiction from. So little is written about him.
      1. He is never said to have been a bodyguard
      2. He is said to have been an attendant. (Letter by Lorenzo Mesia)
      3. No writing whatsoever about whether he was covered up or not.
      4. No sources saying he got any land, houses or servants.
      5. He got a stipend (which is a payment for service, like any attendant would get). Source (Matsudaira Ietada's diary)
      6. Again, no source says he was a retainer (koshin)
      7. We do have information on what happened to him after Nobunaga's defeat. He was sent back to the Jesuits. (Letter by Luis Frois)

In particular, the sacrificial ritual of the Onbashira Festival at Suwa Taisha is very similar to the story of Isaac's sacrifice in the Bible. Yasuke was a retainer of Oda Nobunaga who was very fond of him. It isn’t stated anywhere in history or past historical scripts that we are aware of to suggest he was ever a fully fledged Samurai like he is depicted here but he was given a sword, a house with land and title so it isn’t mad to suggest he wasn’t ever a samurai, especially when in this period of feudal Japan the word Samurai didn’t really exist or was ever used to describe warriors as such because they where described mostly as bushi which translates to warrior, samurai was a wildly used term much later in Yasukes time. There is very little history about Yasuke other than this so I’m not mad at this and just don’t understand how people are up in arms with why they made him a Samurai as their argument is baseless especially when they use the lack of evidence to suggest he was samurai against the argument which is a contradiction because lack
of evidence can work for both sides of the argument. Having said all this, it is very clear Ubisoft are playing the diversity card but I’m not mad as I can see that playing with a character new to this land as Yasuke was could cleverly be used as a way for us to navigate this new culture through his eyes and learn the culture as he did would be a great aspect to the game. Finally, we have a Japanese protagonist yet people are complaining we don’t have a male Japanese protagonist which is very unfair to Naoe’s character and I very much look forward to seeing the game through her perspective also.

    • @Allmightyimortal

Sorry but no. True there is a record stating he was a bushi but that is it. Samurai was used, it just was not that popular and would not be used that often for a while. That said if you can't say he wasn't a samurai due to lack of evidence, the same applies in the reverse. Meaning that your argument is just as baseless as theirs. Basically, you are being a hypocrite.
Also if they made an Assassin's creed game in Africa and used someone from the middle eastern, Roman, Greek, or Dutch characters would you be good with those as well or not.
Finally people have been looking forward to an Assassin's creed game set in Japan with playable Japanese characters, just like in every other game where the main characters are from that country all the way back to Altir. But now that we finally get Japan one of those two characters is not Japanese. That is the problem. No one is upset with Naoe and your statement there at the end is hopefully, unintentionally, missing the point. Both characters should be Japanese not just one. The statement would remain true if the female character was a different race and the male character was Japanese.

@Allmightyimortal just going to say, depending on the time period, literally all of those cultures were in various places in Africa. So again, not off base for them to be in the game in some way or another, time period dependent.

@AkodoGarou first part. True, but how exactly do you think the backlash would be by the same people defending this choice. That's more what I meant.
Second, I'm calling him a hypocrite because this situation needs more info, he states as much and then doubles down on him being a samurai. We honestly can't say one way or the other and so people voicing opposition to this are just as valid as those in support. He days that but doubles down on his side and says the other side is wrong. That's why he is a hypocrite

@@AkodoGarou I mean if you had an AC game where you made the main character of the American civil war Chinese, massage history to make him a bigger deal and push modern Chinese values, we would have the same problem. Then if ppl say you're only mad because he's Chinese, you're being entirely disingenuous over WHY it's an issue. If it wasn't a Ubisoft game, it wasn't an Assassin's Creed game, it was even less historical and it wasn't during the warring states era then there would be far less outrage. Ppl would not care if it was an entirely ahistorical game and new IP. Yosuke could be fighting cyber robots with the power of god and anime on his side and people would love it.
As for the historic nature of what's being argued, as far as I can tell most of the evidence that Yosuke was a Samurai being cited right now comes from 2 professors who wrote a non-peer reviewed book in 2019 with flimsy evidence or the fact that Japanese ppl made content about black Samurai loosely based off of Yosuke, which to me isn't evidence. It's like citing Netflix as the reason Queen Elizabeth is black. Even the first result on google is a reddit post from 2 days ago citing a Britannica article from 2022 citing the book from 2019. Prior to this I vaguely remember looking Yosuke up by accident (A manga about Oda made me go down a rabbit hole) and most of the search results is no he was not a Samurai. In fact, ppl were arguing if he even was black, which is the only reason I remember searching it. It depends on which definition of Samurai u use and it requires the loosest version of the definition and only then can Yosuke be a Samurai, albeit one with little legitimacy. At that point, even Wikipedia brings up a long list of maybe Samurais based off of loose definitions of Samurai. It gets ridiculous.

As a Black person, I'm naturally very interested in Yasuke's story and love that he's in the game, but I understand that he probably should never have been included as a main character. that’s all false lol you learn that from your western sites lmao. To be a samurai you need to be born as a pure blooded Japanese noble family it’s like knights where all knights came from a nobles family. You need to start at the age of 5-13 to start your samurai training and that’s the rule and the rule of the way of the samurai never changes ever. So how tf is Yasuke a samurai? When he’s only been in Japan for 1-3 years until he was shipped back to the Europeans. Yasuke was nothing more than a servant or retainer and retainer in Japan can mean anything IF YOU READ THE ACTUAL TRANSLATION FOR IT AND NOT THE WESTERN ONE. It’s practically a maiden job which is accurate for Yasuke because it stated that he clean his masters sword and armor plus he cook food for him to until his masters death. And let me break it down to you that in Japan Yasuke is nothing more than a fictional figure because he’s not in any history textbooks in Japan ever, in Japan he’s known as a folklore or a myth. There’s several ways to contradict Yasuke being a samurai like when Yasuke failed to protect his master from a traitor and if Yasuke was a samurai and failed he would’ve had to commit seppku as every samurai who fails to protect their masters needs to commit seppku which Yasuke never because he was no samurai and he was release back to the Portuguese

In fact, there are many Asian cultures which would have been more interesting for AC to explore - Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam etc.
Still, from the trailer, Shadows looks good, and yeah, Yasuke was an actual person, he was Oda Nobunaga's retainer (his personal samurai basically, before they became an elite class later on) and only one of two foreigners to achieve that title (the other being William Adams.) The protagonist in the anime Afro Samurai was inspired by him as well.

According to the developer commentary, the black samurai character is supposed to be the actual real life person Yasuke, not just based on him.
I’m sure the game will be tons of fun but I have some storytelling concerns due to having an actual historical figure (regardless of race) as a playable character. If they want to authentically follow what we do know about him, the story’s scope would have to be smaller. If there’s a cool battle or event that would make sense for a samurai character to be present at but it was known Yasuke was somewhere else, he literally cannot be there. Then if they do decide to take creative liberties with Yasuke (since we know so little about him) I think there will be too much that would need to be made up since he would be playable and needs to be present 100% of the time. At that point, they wouldn’t be telling the story of Yasuke anymore, just some made up guy with his name.
I think they could avoid this along with all the other controversy surrounding him right now if he was made a prominent and influential NPC. This would allow Yasuke to be portrayed in the most accurate and authentic way possible and not compromising the story scope while still having him in the game but this argument and many other similar ones are being conflated with being racist and I find that disappointing.

One of the most famous and popular eras of Japanese history. Assassin's Creed may not be super historical but most of it still follows along the historical path. It's not quite as ahistorical as Nioh. I've been wanting a good AAA open world game set in this era where you play as a Samurai. The closest I 've gotten is Samurai warriors or strategy games which don't quite work. If it was fully focused on not being historical with a new IP and especially in a less iconic era, people wouldn't care if it was Yosuke or Aliens. Yasuke is explicitly written as a koshō (小姓 = page, squire.).
Which was the medieval servant of a Knight. Calling Yasuke a Samurai is like calling a page or a squire a Knight.
I just wonder, What can Yasuke do in the Sengoku period? Even they wanna change the history and making him a samurai, but he can't kill anyone.
If he was an assassin, he couldn't hide in a crowd as the only large black guy. Japanese are not brainless and blind. And they had their own heroes at that time.

He only had one sword whereas Samurai had two of them and that sword was most likely ceremonial, just like his Samurai armor. Ubisoft only chose him to be the male protagonist because DEI/ESG. A move that has backfired big time, especially in Japan. I don't care that it is historical fiction. Japanese gamers really don't like the game. One even called is his first time to understand what 'cultural appropriation' feels like. Much of the architecture is Chinese, not Japanese. Yasuke mishandles his sword. And they are upset that after 20 years of asking for a game set in Japan, they don't get a Japanese samurai protagonist.
Also there is debate whether Yasuke was even a samurai. Most evidence points to him not being a samurai. He never received the two swords (wakizashi and katana) of a samurai, only the ceremonial (wakizashi). He never fought in any of the battles and was with Oda only 15 months and in Japan for only 3 years.
Also, Yasuke is the first PC to not be a local from the region in which the game is set, and also the first PC to be based on a real person.

I understand the Author's arguments and agree with more than one, but this Yasuke hardly bothers me in Assasin Creed because it is not a simulation-history game
To those writing here about Assassin Creed: Assasin Creed is not Kingdom Come Deliverance. In this great series of games, however, we have a mythical race of Isu that did not exist The orders of Assassins and Templars did not have stories in real life like in AC lore and Franklin, as someone already wrote, did not support the Assassins. And neither did da Vinci. This is not a game that simulates the Middle Ages or Sengoku or history like the aforementioned KCD but a de facto fantasy game set in realities stylized on Earth's history. So here there is no comparison to the push for Kingdom Come Deliverance. The annoyance of the Japanese I understand but they do similar things in manga, anime. In the famous Knights of the Zodiac (Saint Seiya)in Greece, their leader is Japanese Seiya the Pegasus Knight. While in 1986 when the action of the 1st volume of the manga begins it gets away with it, in the further series taking place in the 18th century the actual leader of the knights and the pegasus is Tenma another Japanese. Where a Japanese in 18th century Greece came from the mangaka didn't care. Not saying I'm happy about Yasuke in AC, but I wouldn't go overboard with the outcry from some fans. Mixing real eras with the fiction of the Isu race, time travel and the age-old almost Templars and Assassins. It's a world not KCD and more in the style of the Code Geass manga where you supposedly have our Earth but the main empire of this world is centered in America has an Emperor and it's called the Britannia empire and you have mega combat mechs in the early 2000s. In such situations it's hard to even laugh at a black person. Isu and time travel spoil everything as medieval or Sengoku Japan simulations.
