Winter Fishing for Toothy Critters

  • Winter fishing for toothy critters. As much as Graeme hates the cold weather he sets out to the big Carp water of Sandhurst, but is intent on seeing if there were any toothy critturs in the water in the shape of a Pike. He uses a few slider lures, but as usual doesn't even know the names of them. Later in the afternoon he finally gets some rod bending action. It’s a classic winter day, the water is clear and the wind is down. Then it’s off into the Surrey Countryside to check out some of the older equipment and tools that were used years ago...All a good watch so sit back and enjoy a journey into the World of Totally Awesome.

    8:01 - sometimes its worth changing lures once or twice if you know a swim has been known to have some pike in it. A change of colour or a lure with a different action might trigger them enough to strike.

      The rivers will be out I imagine,so I might make a phone call and see if I can get some Ragworm for a bit of shore fishing now the wind is going North. Once its gone to East next week I will probably sack the fishing entirely and just work on the properties.

      I'm afraid I got quite carried away last autumn and travelled long distances to film some of the events as I enjoyed it. Nothing to do with UA-cam algorithms telling me to do it,I just wanted to record some of the events or items as once they are gone that's it...there will be no way of knowing about them,unless everyone goes back to old books.

    Hearing anyone in the U.K. complain about how cold it is there is funny to me. Where I live, it gets below zero (fahrenheit) every year. It's been a very light winter so far, and we still have half a foot of snow on the ground.
    Honestly, where I live isn't even that cold by U.S. standards. Shoutout to my fellows in the Upper Midwest, Northern Plains, Intermountain West, and Alaska. Y'all have some real hardcore winters.
    The U.K. with their mild, oceanic climate, don't really understand how easy they have it.
    I'm not complaining, though. I love the challenge. Winter is my favorite season.
    However, I do find the Enlishman, or the Scot, or Irish, or Welsh to be rather amusing when stating how cold it is ABOVE freezing!😄

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 місяців тому

      But its a Maritime damp cold over here,not the dry cold with powder snow etc. I am so grateful we get the influence from the North Atlantic drift or we would get the same cold winter temperatures as Newfoundland or similar latitudes .

    A Triumph Vitesse! A Dursley Pederson bike.. a Salter bros Oxford bike...famous for its boats on the Thames in the 1860's +which you flippantly ignore as you were probably fishing on the English Channel hoiking out 100lb cod on one of them. And as for the tool museum... Are you down there this year?

    Just what was needed . A bit of lure fishing 🎣. I tried your advice Graham with regards to using light stick for night lure fishing . Didn't make any any.. where that was fishing on the tees we had lot of bad storms and there was many trees under the that had washed down from Yarm areas.. so blank all night. 6 hours.. start 9pm , I left at 3 a.m. I enjoyed it and isn't that what we do stupid fishing times. .. I've been buying loads new gear so I instantly like to get out there and try it the day that I get it.. I was fishing boxing Day and New year's Day.. and twice in between.. I don't celebrate New year it's the same old shit just a different year . Boxing Day might as well be a normal day too . I hope you had a great Christmas you and the family and a good new year also . I haven't been fishing the last couple of days unfortunately it's done nothing but rain up here in North Yorkshire.... Looking forward to getting the house starts becoming claustrophobic if I'm not out at least three times a week.. haven't even had any chance to do any beach fishing as the weather has been so.. cold does not scare me but wind in colossal waves especially fishing in Whitby or saltburn or staithes .. gotta be careful especially when you're fishing alone late evening or tbrough tbe night..thanks Graeme

    Apologies for ram raiding. 39.57 They are syckles or Sickles. They were used for topping the leaves of swedes, turnips and seeding cabbages prior to harvest. so they would get a better taste with the frost...which is proven doesn't happen today... but anyway. They would also carry them around (farmers) for preventive work in the fields whilst checking the sheep and cattle. And genenerally swashing at something which shouldn't be there. Nowadays we have pesticides to do all that which runs in to the rivers and kills the Fish...Scythes are those things that Mr Time brings along, but great for cutting back areas of your land that is getting overgrown...but if you see some bugger with one...call your enemy out. christ I Could talk for years on all this stuff.

    Some lovely pike, especially nice to see as rivers are in the streets currently, and we'd be lure fishing between lamp posts. The strings on the bicycle wheel are a dress guard, from the days when ladies cycled in skirts. Sari guards are still a big thing in India, and cycles and motorcycles are generally supplied with them.

      I normally bounce between rivers,lakes and beach at this time of year .If the rivers flood I try to find a stillwater that isn't affected by a moving watercourse,so is less prone to flood. And if the wind is down and a high tide coincides with dark I will trek off down the beach. I can feel a shore fishing coming shortly in fact !!!

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 місяців тому

      Yes,I always get the lure back as I've been unhooking Pike for a good few years now. To be honest I'm always more worried about getting a treble in my hand than the teeth on the Pike...I've seen a few hooks in people,big hooks with barbs,and its not something I wish to emulate.

    What happens to the fish when it swallows the whole lure and it cannot be retrevied

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 місяців тому

      I don't think I have ever had a Pike take a lure down so deep I can't get it,as the lure is being retrieved away from them so the fisherman knows the instant he has a take. With bait of course they can pick it off the bottom and swallow it, but I think the time is coming to get rid of barbed treble hooks and just use either doubles or singles,barbless.. Always a bad case when a Pike gets netted then twists and rolls and a hook barb goes through the netmesh. I find trebles in landing nets a nightmare personally so carry a pair of scissors to cut the net if stuck,or crush the lure trebles barbs with pliers. It all makes unhooking a bit easier.

    • @steveow40
      @steveow40 8 місяців тому

      Try using a single circle hook for dead baiting, it completely eliminates the flying trebles in the mesh or your hands debacle and even better it prevents any deep hooking of the pike,
