"Fair market value" is only valid when the sale is voluntary. In the case of a forced expropriation, the compensation should be greater than "fair market value" to take into account emotional trauma, moving expenses and the inconvenience of living somewhere that does not correspond to where they have chosen to live.
This is unacceptable. These are heritage homes, there is no amount money that will compensate the homeowners for the emotional distress . shame on our government for allowing this to happen 😢

Disgraceful but this is what Canada has become a disgrace to anyone that HAS TO live here. My ancestors fought for this country, what ashame it wasn't worth their lives. Fair market value? If they posted their house for sale on their own, they would’ve gotten a lot more. They are not doing them any favours. They are doing them a huge disservice.
that's not true, they'll get A LOT more than the house is worth because they can't legally be forced to sell the house, only make arrangements to move, so the owners have ALL of the leverage in price negotiations because they don't necessarily have to move at all
Wrong. The law states they have to pay what a reasonable person would pay. They never get what's fair. They get what the government offers and usually below market value with other costs creeping in the home owner covers
What about the person who has to move from there and their commute is 3 to 4 to five times longer costing them $20 to $30 in gas a day for the rest of their life.
