    Great to see someone caring for a wild animal. Just remember, it's better to grab ticks as close behind the tick's heads as possible and then pull them out, so that you don't squeeze more of the tick's saliva into the animal, because the tick's saliva can carry diseases.

    When my dad painted our garden wooden fences with creosote in the late summer years ago, hedgehogs would lick the fence and generate saliva/creosote which they then coated their body with. The creosote saliva would prevent ticks and fleas. We could hear the hedgies in the summer grunting like little pigs as they worked themselves into a frenzy with their anti bug activity. We used to leave saucers of milk out and catfood for them and watch while they ate and drank their fill.

    Dude, just a peace of advise, dont just jack a plier into those ticks and pull 'm out. Grab m with your plier, and start turning them, clockwise or counter-clockwise. Dont matter. Do it gentle and then they will let go without even pulling them. You might end up with a ticks head stuck inside the hedgehog thats going to infect him and in the worst case die.

      @@Tepadj We use oil to prevent him from grabbing back in or putting his claw back into the skin again. This is all just a very short moment of roughly 3 seconds. Oil, take pliers or something equal, slowly turn it one way or the other, and the tick will let go, with it's head and without complications. As i was 12 i got a tick too right behind my ear. Basicly my parents thought me that oil was the best followed with turning, and not pulling as seen on this video. You can rupture the body from it's head and the head stays inside the skin.

    You have to be careful when handling hedgehogs with your bare hands, although it seems silly (which it is not) the hedgehog coats its spines with its saliva when it eats certain foods, impregnating its quills with powerful chemicals and bacteria that could make you visit the hospital several times with complications in the worst case.

    1) I am amazed that you can catch these wild creatures so easily. 2) I am glad you make the effort to help them. Ticks are insidious creatures, and I sympathize with anybody who cannot reach them on their own. Humans can generally remove a tick themselves, or with the help of a friend, but most animals cannot reach certain parts of their own body, and there is nobody to help.

    • @DeathlordSlavik
      @DeathlordSlavik 2 роки тому

      Some types of birds and a couple of other small animals will eat ticks off other animals and some animals understand as much and will let them eat them while others don't seem to understand as much and wont let themselves be touched.

    • @vizzini2510
      @vizzini2510 2 роки тому

      @@DeathlordSlavik Indeed, oxpeckers and cowbirds are routinely seen eating all types of bugs off the top of large animals, but their motivations are purely selfish. It is just serendipitous that the host animal benefits from the pest removal. Also, these birds cannot usually reach ticks in the most sensitive areas, like the armpits and groin areas. Many primates groom each other, which seems to be for the mutual benefit of both parties, but I think only humans would intentionally remove a tick solely for the benefit of the victim.

    Just been to the Yorkshire Agricultural Show and a specialist there said squeezing or tweezing ticks out causes them to release into the victims bloodstream whatever disease etc they are carrying. He said to use a tiny crowbar to prise the ticks jaws apart. He said they will drop off anyway when the tick is full.
