You were spotting at the BAD 1R location. Get away from the trees and stand near the service road that leads to IAD. It's infront of the gate for Udvar and you get good side/belly shots of planes.
***** I was a little further south than I wanted to be that evening. Will keep the other spot in mind for next time. Went about 200 feet further north the next day and it still worked out well for being my first time getting 1R arrivals!
I was in chantilly that weekend as well! Stayed at the Comfort Suites facing the approach! I saw the 787 on approach as well as a a380 a while before!

Awesome! Where is this? The Air and Space Museum parking lot is a good place to spot. They usually don't mind you especially if you are there touring.
