Avay Ashram: গান্ধীর তৈরি আশ্রমে আজ হচ্ছেটা কী?

যে আশ্রম তৈরি করেছিলেন গান্ধীজী সেই আশ্রম আজ নেশার আখড়া। স্বাধীনতার আগে ব্রিটিশদের হাতে গুঁড়িয়ে দেওয়া আঞ্চলিক অর্থনীতির চাকা ঘোরানোর জন্য সুতো ঘুরিয়েছিলেন গান্ধীজি। তার অনুপ্রেরণায় পরাধীন ভারতবর্ষে শুরু হওয়া কুটির উদ্যোগের সংস্থা উদ্যোগের সংস্থা মৃতপ্রায় হয়েছে স্বাধীন ভারতবর্ষে সেই কংগ্রেসের আমলে যারা কিনা গান্ধীজিকে নিজেদের আদর্শ বলে মনে করে।
প্রথমে এই আশ্রমের নাম ছিল সবিতা মিশন আশ্রম। পরে মহাত্মা গাঁধীর পরামর্শ নামকরণ হয় ‘অভয় আশ্রম’। গ্রামভিত্তিক কুটির শিল্পের মাধ্যমে অর্থনৈতিক স্বনির্ভরতার জন্য ১৯২১ সালে পূর্ববঙ্গের কুমিল্লার এই আশ্রমের প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন ভারতীয় জাতীয় কংগ্রেস নেতৃবৃন্দ। তাদের মধ্যে প্রধান ছিলেন প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র ঘোষ, সুরেশচন্দ্র বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, হরিপদ চট্টোপাধ্যায় প্রমুখেরা। বিভিন্ন সময় এই আশ্রমের কর্মকাণ্ডে যুক্ত ছিলেন চিত্তরঞ্জন দাশ, সুভাষচন্দ্র বসু, প্রফুল্ল চন্দ্র রায়, শরৎচন্দ্র বসু।ভারতের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলন অভয় আশ্রম একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা নেয়। সশস্ত্র বিপ্লবীরা নানা সময় এখানে আশ্রয় নিয়ে লুকিয়ে থাকতেন। রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ১৯২৬ সালে ত্রিবার্ষিক সম্মেলনে সভাপতিত্ব করতে কুমিল্লার অভয় আশ্রমে এসেছিলেন। এছাড়া চক্রবর্তী রাজা-গোপালচারী, সীমান্ত গান্ধী আবদুল গাফফার খান, যমুনা লাল বাজাজ, ঠক্কর বাবা, সাদিক আলী প্রমুখ জাতীয় নেতৃবৃন্দ পদার্পণ করেছেন আশ্রমের উন্নয়নমূলক কর্মকাণ্ড দেখার জন্যে। বাংলার বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে অভয় আশ্রমের একাধিক শাখা গড়ে ওঠে। তেমনই এক শাখা ছিল উত্তর 24 পরগনা জেলার বিরাটির এই অভয় আশ্রম।
