I was thoroughly impressed with all of the Faithful and the Fallen books. Every one of them kept me on the edge of my seat. I just finished A Time of Dread and boy is it dark. I love it. I don’t know that John Gwynne can fail at this point. He is just an excellent storyteller.
You got me reading the Faithful and the Fallen. Im here to see what you thought of these. I fuckin Love John Gwynne man. Thankyou for turning me on to him and Cahill and Ruocchio. I look forward to more of your suggestions.
I finished Wrath this weekend. I immediately ordered the Of Blood & Bone series. In two weeks I'll pre-order book 1 of his 3rd series. He's now my new favorite author. ... And yes, I cried after Ruin. Hard.
TRUTH AND COURAGE!! This series is definitely darker than FATF, but not too dark if you don't enjoy that kind of thing. I loved reading about the fall out from Wrath, it felt like reading about family and was really bittersweet. Great twists throughout the book, and if you think you enjoyed this one, just wait until you read the next two! Even more twists and jaw-dropping moments, and literally the only scene that has ever made me feel like I've been physically punched in the face
You have become my absolute favorite reviewer and content creator! I have gotten so many amazing recommendations from you. Abercrombie and Gwynne, specifically. Your recommendations are like those I receive from other learned friends; I trust your opinion and value it. I look forward to jumping into some discussions in the future.
I loved this series! They only get better from here on out. It took me time to get used to the characters (personally not a big fan of time skips), but they way he progressed the world was super cool. By the middle of the second book, the new crew grew on me quite a bit.
Great series, been hard to find something I like since I read ASOIAF. I haven’t ready the new series, but the faithful and fallen gets better every book
I loved Blood and Bone trilogy. My only complained is coming from Faith and the Fallen is the more narrowly focused story. Fewer POVs and Areas in the Banished Lands I just wanted more. However, the world and story evolved after the ending of the first series was done so great. I love stories were there are consequences from the actions of the characters, to the world and themselves.
I read through “Malice”, “Valor” and started “Ruin”, I haven’t finished it yet, I had gotten side tracked with another book series. At first I wasn’t a fan of the classic tropes but, I really enjoyed the books and the way he twist the tropes for his story. Plus his action scenes are some of the best I’ve read.
Thanks for the review Mike, Ill be giving it a shot when I finish The Faithful and the Fallen. Also based off your recommendation ! keep up the good work
John Gwynne is definitely on my TBR, but right now I probably have to wait a bit to buy his books, have just bought 8 Branden Sanderson books plus 6 other books, it is not completely impossible that I happen to buy one of them on my kindle.
Definitely an author I have wanted to read for a while. I will definitely picking up the original series. I am looking at starting the Licanius trilogy ready for the final paperback out in December
I just starting reading malice last night. Read the prologue and the thing about the gods before chapter 1. It was interesting. If I end up liking it, I'll eventually come back to this review.
I will be starting this next month after Greatcoats, do a read along side of that. Definitely excited. Just to make sure I’m done for whenever his next series launches.
If subverting expectations is becoming expected, does that mean stories should follow through on the original expectations in order to truly subvert expectations? 🤔
I only have 2 complaints about the series 1. I kinda didn't vibe with I think her name was Riv. The girl that's with the White Wings. But I think that's a very subjective thing- liking a character or not. 2. And that's a big one for me: ma bois Farrell and Dath were Corban's childhood friends and grew up with one another like brothers (especially Dath) and yet they were mentioned only once or twice? Would've liked to have them remembered as his best friends and closest advisors or companions or something of the sort.
Riv is a character that definitely had to grow on me and I agree with you 100% on the second part but history only remembers the biggest players so I think it is reasonable.
@@GreeneZonee but with the legendary status Corban achieved you'd think his best friends would also be remembered especially when they themselves were also quite skilled fighters. I mean Farrell was swinging his hammer against normal foes and a sword against the Kadoshim to decapitate them and Dath was the commander of the archers and with Camlin the first to use bow and arrow in a battlefield situation. He came up with a new battle strategy something like that would be remembered (at least by military societies and this the banished lands are)
Awesome book. But somehow I feel like the sacrifices and hard work of Corban and his partners were wasted almost completely. Things are really bad in Bland. Somehow it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Loved this entire series. If anyone doubts Gwynne's ability to write battle scenes, wait until the final half of A Time of Courage.
Absolutely! A Time of Courage I still think has one of the best climaxes to a fantasy story I’ve read in awhile

I better stop watching. I'm still on Malice. I'll come back to this video later!

By this point Gwynne is my 3rd favourite author aswel.Slightly bellow Sanderson and Abercrombie :D
He's automatic for me.

Can't wait to see your reaction to the next two! I'm so excited for Gwynne's next series!
Perfect shirt, and the review's not too shabby either. Great work as always!
Excellent choice for narrated segment
I too, highlighted that sequence in my brain

thanks for another great review! just finished Dread & going to tackle Blood this week. love the Banished lands!
John is as automatic as it comes in modern fantasy.
I like the way u review book.. I tried to read John Gwynn book I couldn’t read any more books from him.. happy reading to u!! 😊📖
You seem to be a heavy metal fan. I like that
Always. I feel like most fantasy fans are also lovers of metal...even if they don't know it yet.
Good stuff Maynard
Insta thumbs up just for the Maiden shirt!! 🤟
i love your channel, great work man, one question if you do not mind: what do you do for living, how many hours a day can you read without pause?
Saw this and went “oh shit” to myself at work
Gerrr... watching this makes me want to start book 2 right away and say screw it to my September TBR that I worked so hard to curate lol
Finally read this today. Oh man.
Awesome review 👍 this one looked good to me
Do the books have a happy ending? Does John kill any of the main characters? Is it a sad book?

Ha ha it's getting there.

I am having trouble getting Gwynne...I keep thinking “Mike doesn’t have good taste.” Then he wears a Maiden shirt...🤘
I actually prefer John's writing style and books over the song of ice and fire. I LOVE the classic tropes with the contemporary writing.
Discord link is broken!

Somehow it left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Agreed.
