In re Si's dislike of bells, I can assert that I've had many pedestrians and cyclists thank me for ringing a bell before overtaking them on bike paths and sometimes the road. I will yell HALLLLLO ON YOUR LEFT, but if the circumstances permit, I go with the bell first.
Same here. I use a Spurcycle bell. It’s very pleasant sounding, but bright enough that people can hear it even while they have earbuds in place. If I was to shout at them loud enough to be heard, most folks would be offended.
Absolutely. I did say in my message that it was a massive bodge, so not surprised they agreed 😂. Around where I am there's literally 100s of tourists and dog walkers every ride and the reaction since using the horn as been brilliant, I'm no longer into hammering my way along and love the interactions I now have at the more leisurely pace I ride at😊
I don’t think the current peloton is clean but it’s not like the early 90’s when it was a free for all. What is different now imo is riders coming from a wider talent pool, more places where kids have access to bikes, more talent
As far as bell use on bicycles, I resisted putting a bell on my bikes for more than ten years, all the while complaining that most trail users don't hear or don't know what to do with "On your left!" Often, they move TO THE LEFT. I was at the LBS last year complaining about this, and one of the employees told me that, for whatever reason, bells work better. He was right. I had a bell on my last two rides of 2023, and the bell worked EVERY TIME. I'm sold.
Ah you see I would never shout "on the left", I always go for, "hello" and then allow the person to move whichever way they want. Makes life way nicer. Cheers, Si
@@gcn A single ping on a bell is much better, particularly since you usually want to be giving warning when you are still at least 50 yards away. A ping of eth bell can be hgeard mre easily than a shout at that distance.
Wow you guys, out here giving very powerful advice re: humanizing other riders/drivers and reframing our perspective to try to be a little more grateful Cheers, fellas
Great show guys. Here's a thing I have discovered for myself. If you take a watt count - say 300Watts, and divide it by 10 = 30 - that is approximately the weight in kilograms you are applying to the pedals with each leg, for every pedal stroke to achieve that wattage. Easy enough for a few pedal strokes, but 20 or 30 minutes, or an hour !! Now we're talking. However, that doesn't necessarily equate to monster leg power and massive legs like Mr. Forster the track cyclist. Dave Bedford, the distance runner from the eighties was famed for having the same cadence and stride length when running regardless of the surface underfoot - mud, rivers, woodland, grass or road. He had enormously strong legs without huge muscle mass- but it's that kind of strength endurance that I think cyclists aspire to - myself included.
Hello GCN show…I would like to say your content has greatly improved over the last few months. I stopped watching for a while, but something seems different and I like it.
As someone who lives and works as a bicycle mechanic in Portland, OR I agree that PART of the decrease in pre-pandemic ridership is due to an increase in remote work. Another large factor is a topic you’ve been covering with some frequency lately; cars. Since the pandemic, there has seemed to be a meteoric rise in reckless driving and hit and runs that have left many cyclists feeling unsafe on city streets. I wonder if other cities have had the same experience. More protected bike infrastructure!
One of the most insightful things I've heard in awhile is Cillian's remark about using "get to" instead of "have to" in regards a task to or activity at hand. It does help the mindset somewhat.
It's genuinely been life-changing since I started using that. Not in any grand, overwhelming kind of way. But if you use it consistently, it just makes enough of a difference to make you stop and check yourself, have a breath when you might be a bit stressed and make you realise that things could be a lot worse.
You guys are all amazing, but I do love it when Cillian makes an appearance. The docs about him and videos are always so wonderful, more Cillian please. And also, any chance you're going to upload the GCN+ docs to UA-cam? Or will there be another spot to watch Cillian's Etape du Tour again?
Lazkano definitely isn't 74kg, just cause the internet says it doesn't mean it's true. Heard someone say they watched some Movistar content somewhere and saw that he was down as 83kg.
I respect your opinion towards a dinging bell as you walk Simon, but in this day and age were everybody has on AirPods of some sort, ringing the bell is inevitable for safety.
