Actually, Boa were formed much, much earlier - Mladen Puljiz (vocals) and Slavko Remenarić (guitar) started a project - originally called "Boa Constrictor" earlier in the 70s, while the pair were still at the university. Many song ideas came about during that time and some of them later took proper shape in Boa's repertoire. Their influences at the time were more of a prog-rock/glam origin (the singer Puljiz mentioned Yes and Roxy Music on more than one occasion in some of his interviews during the early 90s), but of course, as is the case with many new wave acts, the punk/post-punk explosion changed that course completely, coinciding with the contemporaries paying attention to one another (in Boa's early-80s' material, the presence of Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads' polyrhythmia are quite audible, Japan were also a big influence (that group's earlier material maybe even more than the later "Gentlemen Take Polaroids"/"Quiet Life"/"Tin Drum" blend of east and west) but for me the most thrilling element is the bass, which betrays a certain, and very effective Gang Of Four presence as well). They in fact never liked the suggestion they were the answer to the UK New Romantics'. Now, I am not sure if they were already appearing in public around 1979 (I'd say 1980 would be the earliest), but then I might be wrong about it... :)
