This is a fantastic video. I admit I didn’t even know about Métis Fiddle or culture. I live in Louisiana and I am very Milyer with Cajun fiddling. I just listened to several Montana mystery novels written by a Peter Bowen with the main character Gabriel, a Métis Who is a champion fiddler. It reminds me a lot of the Cajun Fais dodo dances. In any case, thank you for doing this all those many years ago. A quick Google and your video came up. Merci beaucoup from down here on the Bayou
You, sir, are a true inspiration. It's clear how much passion you have for music, and you play that fiddle like it's going out of style. Which, thanks to guys like you, it never will. Thank you for sharing this unique piece of Métis and Canadian culture, and making it so accessable. Salut de Vancouver de Nord! Keep 'em coming.
trent, ty for posting this, i'm metis too & play the ham. dulcimer, autoharp, accordion & a little fiddle as well. Didn't grow up w/my people/adopted, so i'm always eager to learn new stuff and as much as i can. ty so much. meegwech
I just got home from the John Arcand Fiddle Festival in Saskatchewan and LOVED every minute of the Metis style. I'm catching on to the chording style...slowly! And I'm determined to learn the footwork! Thanks for sharing this!!!!
I have heard Hangmans reel plaid by Erin Marshal and Shane Cook at Montana fiddle camp two different years. Both Impressed me and yours sounds just as good! Keep on fiddling. Jim
Very good. Down here in the southeastern United States we play that "Devil's Waltz" as well--mostly fiddlers but many banjoists also. Never heard it called that before, however, most down here call it "Rye Whiskey," "Jack of Diamonds" or "Drunken Hiccups."
first of all.. you have the cutest smile! ANNNNNDDD... you are incredibly talented. Everything is pitch perfect with such a beautiful tone. Thank you for posting! Ill try using your advice the next time I practice the fiddle!
Dude, you rock. I've always thought of the violin being such a majestic instrument, but man, you make it sound so unconventionally awesome. Keep it up!
You are AMAZING! I play a lot of that metis style too apparently. I mean the more rhythmic asmpect you spoke of. I have been trained as a bluegrass fiddler, but I always seemed to find myself adding more of the rhythm like the Metis. I just never knew it was actually called something else. And I'm gonna try that Metis tuning now too.
hate to say it but you are right on! This is more Canadian than Bob and Doug MacKenzie standing in front of a map waving flags. He should also be on hockey night in Canada or working for the Oilers.
Hey. Please. Don't remove this video. I pledge to be a Metis fiddler. And that can only be achieved by watching this 200 times. Please give me a list of songs in A tuning. Hye hye
Now I see where John Hartford must have picked up his ability to dance while playing fiddle. He must have listened to some metis style fiddle. You are a master!
If y'all like this, you should also check out hardingfele playing. A traditional norwegian instrument and style of playing. A classic is "Fanitullen". It's really cool!
watch?v=cc-WGo4N8h8 Even the tuning is the same (called troll tuning in Norwegian). The tune Devil's Waltz feels very similar to the Fanitullen I linked, both in the pizzicato, as well as the dancy feel. Further interesting is that Fanitullen translates roughly to Devil's Tune, I suppose it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to figure Norwegian ships would have docked in Canadian ports...
Daniel, there are so many variations of genetic mix in us, that we all don't have dark skin! Some of us that have Scottish ancestry have light skin and red hair. So please don't judge a book by it's cover.
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A Violin is Culture. A Fiddle is... (wait for it)... Agriculture! :-) [I stole that joke 40 years ago...]
It is a joy to hear you play, Trent. Congratulations. Also liked Ry's accompaniment. I am an old time & buegrass fiddler from North Carolina.

Les Metis ont appris que de nous acadie a la Louisiane.

WOW! Not sure what to say the finger work is wonderful...I'll admire my violin more.

you should make a version more music less talk for people who already know about the fiddle
By that I mean...I'll place more value and invest more time with the violin.
