I don’t think so. ND can lose that game and still go 11-1 and make the playoff. In the flip side, A&M can lose that game and still go 9-3 or 10-2. Both scenarios are still really good
Could be true. It will say a lot more about ND and go a long way toward securing them a playoff spot as this could be their toughest game. A&M could squeak one out but not amount to much
Actually, I’d like to rescind my statement. A&M plays a fairly easy schedule with all of their toughest games at home. This is a much bigger swing game than I could have imagined. I don’t think Riley Leonard is all that great, so if he has a poor showing, ND is suddenly questioning everything whereas A&M will be saying “why not” with their schedule
So is the real UT at OK - it sorta defines both teams' expectations for the new SEC schedule. And that's if Tennessee doesn't get surprised sleeping on NC State at a neutral site
Biased cuz I’m an Auburn fan but Oklahoma at Auburn feels like a huge one. Both have a good chance of being 4-0. First SEC road test for Oklahoma. Could be a huge turning point for Auburn if they win that one and start 5-0 going into Georgia or huge for Oklahoma as they play Texas the following week. Assuming they both start the season strong this would be a huge turning point for either team.
Josh, I would think if you’re going to include a Nebraska game under the heading “Biggest Swing Games,” it would be the week 2 Colorado at Nebraska game. You made a good case for the Ohio State game, but still, importance hinging (most likely) on margin of victory for Ohio State?
To not have Michigan as the swing game makes zero sense. There is 1 game the solely defines OSU every year and that’s vs Michigan, Nebraska is hardly relevant and probably has a 90% of losing that game
@@jayandrusiak No one can deny the importance of Michigan/Ohio State, but I don’t believe the traditional last game of the season for both teams would qualify as a “swing game;” the season will be over.
Maybe for Texas. But Michigan has not only a new Qb, but also a totally new OL. Very talented rising seniors, mostly, plus 2 older players, yet they might need a few weeks to gel. I expect that line to be great by mid season, but they easily could lose Michigan the Texas game, without that saying much for the B1G championship...
I genuinely think Tennessee at Oklahoma is one of the biggest swing games this season. It’s early in the season, and if UT takes it, they’re going to be playing Bama undefeated and with a revved up roster hot on the Nico train- and if they take our Bama (which is a genuine possibility in the atmosphere of Neyland stadium), then they’re likely going undefeated into Georgia and making the playoffs whether or not they win that game. If Oklahoma takes it, they start out their SEC play (because yes, it’s their first SEC game) with a huge statement, knocking off the team led by Josh Heupel, their former National Champion QB, and Nico Iamaleava, the current most anticipated QB walking into this season. They would be setting up very nicely for future matchups with that kind of momentum, and I think they have the staff and the fan atmosphere to do it. One of the most underrated swing games this season in my opinion. I feel confident saying the winner of that one will go on to earn a playoff spot and be a genuine threat.
Josh, Nebraska played Ohio State close a couple times during the Frost era - and do you know what a close loss to a great team proves? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! If close losses were indicators of success, Scott Frost would have been coach of the year and Nebraska would be punching their ticket to the playoffs
ANY game Oklahoma plays in the new SEC will be a SWING GAME! Beating Oklahoma to trash both them and Big 12 is a statement win for every SEC opponent. I count 4 different teams in the comments referencing Oklahoma.
Georgia vs Bama is the biggest swing game. Either passing of the torch or a reminder that nothing has changed, at least that’s how the media would see this. Also OSU and Oregon fans should root for Bama so they get their 1-2 matchup
I honestly believe that UGA will get past, over, through and around Bama in Tuscaloosa this year. A little frustration taken out for Not being able to beat Saban in the past, except for in the Nati. Don't get me wrong. Bama is very, very good and a playoff team. I just think UGA will be ready for Bama this time around because of Kirby Smart.
@@brianreese7804 UGA hasn't "been ready" for Bama since 2007. Kirby is 1-5 and the 1 required two attempts in the same season, after getting the breaks beat off them in the 2021 SEC Championship.
Nebraska possibly starting 7-0 just shows how OVERRATED the Big10 is. Nebraska is rebuilding and a fringe top 30 team at best. They should easily win their first 4 conference games.
2:25 "Nebraska may be favored in all eight games before they play this one [Ohio State] in Week 9." No offense, but Nebraska plays _seven_ games before they face Ohio State, not _eight._ 1) UTEP, 2) Colorado, 3) Northern "Irate", 4) Illinois, 5) Purdue, 6) Rutgers, 7) Indiana. Ohio State is their 8th game. The extra week is 10/12 when they have a bye. I agree watching the Big12 is very entertaining.
As a Bama fan Hugh Freeze at Auburn is a dangerous combo, he’s one of the better coaches that’s under the radar love him or hate him he knows what he’s doing
I think Georgia at Alabama is another swing game. Mostly because its not just another case of can Georgia finally get a win in Tuscaloosa. But also how strong is the Alabama fan base after all those years of being spoiled by Nick Saban. It can determine how much or the fans are true fans or how many are leftover bandwagons.
I would throw Florida at Tennessee in there, for whatever reason no matter how bad Florida is Tennessee struggles with them. If that trend continues you’ll see a 3 loss Tennessee that’s left out of the playoff.
Hopefully, that's the sentiment inside the ohio locker room too, and a much improved Nebraska team catches them looking ahead to penn state. That 4 game stretch of Iowa, Oregon (road), Nebraska, and PSU (road) is brutal. I don't see ohio making it out of that month without at least 1 loss. It very much could be Nebraska that gives it to them
What about Clemson vs. Georgia. First game, Clemson probably has about a 25% chance. If Clemson wins, they have a marquee win and might be a lock for a playoff spot…and it could serve as that weasel Dabo’s statement that he’s still a championship caliber coach. One more good but not great year and I think we can kick him to the curb. If Georgia loses, we’d have to ask where the bottom is on their season. They penciled in (at worst) this W vs. Clemson, and now are staring at @Texas, @Alabama, @Ole Miss and a potentially very good Tennessee with a loss on the ledger. That game could decide who’s in and who’s out when we take inventory at the end of the season, so it’s an enormous swing game
@brianritchey7923 see I’m with you man, except for the fact that if you look at roster strength and trajectory, Clemson’s shot is probably much less than 25%. I would LOVE to see them knock off Georgia that early, but I don’t think anyone’s going to catch them slipping until maybe midway through the season. Still a very important game though to set the tone for Georgia’s program- I’m hoping it’s at least a close one
Michigan Texas week 2. Most are assuming Michigan will be taking a big step back while Texas gets better. Even though they both lost roughly the same amount of production. Sure, Michigan has a new coach, but also had the deepest team in the country last year and rotated players at almost every position all game with little to no drop in production. Meaning, the "backups" had almost as much playing time as the starters and their experience level is much higher than what allears on paper. As of now, michigan is a 2.5 dog at home. What's the narrative going to be if michigan wins? My guess is that if it's close, the narrative will remain almost unchanged with the additions of it being an out of conference game that doesn't matter, Texas was on the road early in the season so it doesnt mean anything, and a few other "reasons" their preseason predictions weren't wrong. But what if michigan wins big or in dominating fashion? That's when things would get real interesting, and we'd get to see some people struggling to somehow keep Texas at the top of the pile while somehow discounting what michigan did. If Texas wins, small or big, then of course the game not only matters, but is a huge deal. We'll be hearing things like Texas will win the SEC and NC, while michigan is losing 3 or 4 or more, and missing the playoffs.
Don't think UM losing to Texas would tell us much, though. Michigan has not only a new Qb, but also a totally new OL. Very talented rising seniors, mostly, plus 2 older players, yet they might need a few weeks to gel for Michigan's run first offense to really click. I expect that line to be great by mid season, but they easily could lose Michigan the Texas game, without that saying much for the B1G championship...
@positroll7870 It tells us that Texas is the real deal and a legit NC competitor. I know most already seem to believe they are that, but I'm not one of them. I think Texas is being overrated, and they're not even as good as they were last year. I also think michigan is being slightly underrated. So if Texas wins on the road, it's a bigger accomplishment than they'll likely get credit for. I guess it won't matter though since they're already being ranked so high, but it should. If Texas wins, the worst they do is 10-2, but could easily go 11-1 or possibly 12-0 with an upset over Georgia. If they lose, I think the best they do is 9-3, but 8-4 is equally likely. Both scenarios probably keep them out of the playoffs.
