On the fateful night of February 29, 1960, at 11:40 p.m., Agadir, Morocco, experienced one of the deadliest earthquakes in its history. In a mere ten seconds, three-fourths of the city crumbled, and between 10,000 and 12,000 lives were lost. This devastating event sent shockwaves through Morocco, reminiscent of the destruction of Lisbon in 1755.
At that time, Morocco was celebrating its fourth year of independence, with Agadir symbolizing the nation's aspirations for modern development. The city's history dates back to ancient times, likely founded by the Phoenicians, with its name signifying a fortified grain storage and refuge in Berber culture.
The international spotlight shone on Agadir in 1911 when the gunboat Panther arrived, sparking diplomatic tensions that eventually recognized the French Protectorate over Morocco. By the 1930s, Agadir had transformed into a bustling hub, boasting a deep-water port, agriculture, fisheries, and mineral exploitation. Its population swelled, attracting tourists and becoming a vital economic center.
Tragically, the 1960 earthquake reduced this thriving city to ruins. Agadir was reborn from the ashes, but the scars ran deep, impacting the lives of its inhabitants and beyond.
