- I discuss more about SPST, SPDT and SPNO-SPNC relays.
Attention: Do not try any of what you see in this video at home. It takes at least two years of HVACR schooling to become qualified to learn in the field how to work on heating and air conditioning equipment. Then it takes another three years of apprenticeship training to become competent enough to safely work on heating and air conditioning equipment.

Just started HVAC tech school and this is the best explanation I've seen of why we see different kinds of relays. Thank you.
Its been 3 years, how are you doing in the trade ? Tired of attics yet lol !
Hey DrZ,
Nice vids on relays. It's nice that guys like you,Fritz,5tank,Dizzie, and others are willing to share their knowledge for us youtubers. I have a friend that does hvac who has helped me out with my system when I needed it and between his help and all of ya'lls vids, I have a greater understanding of hvac.
Thanks!
@DrZarkloff Yes I have a six point fan relay and the inside blower fan is always on? Once I remove the fan speed wire which comes from the motor it turns off. The fan speed is connected to the normally closed set of contacts i believe its 6 or 5 . Fan relay was switched. I was to it could be the heat sequencers.
As always, another top notch video. Very concise and easy to understand.
So glad to find a rare super-human! Subscribed for life!
The coil voltage is on pins 1 and 3. The line voltage goes on pin 2 and the load voltage goes on pin 4.
DrZarkloff can you explain it with voltages
Notice the soldered terminals for 24v(1&3). Continuity shows the rest.
I'm not sure but if I understand your question correctly, you could use a double pole double throw relay.
@RockinGuy1994 These relays can be used for lots of things but usually in a residential application they are used as fan relays for blower motors. They are also good to use if you need just a set of contacts to control when something comes on/off, like if a relay on a control board goes bad.
Very good explanation for beginner level folks! Thank you.
Thank YOU! 🙏 VERY WELL EXPLAINED
@Whatasize410a I don't know if bypassing anything on a furnace is a good idea. The manufacturer put in the safeties to protect the end user.
Man do I agree and also now a days these young kids have no idea what these do I been doing hvac for 14 years and now I'm finally a service manager and I can't tell you how many times these guys call me about this and I tell them to get a oem board and not to use these
@RockinGuy1994 They can be used in heat pumps as well as energize blower motors in any type of system.
great video. what kind of relay wound i need for 3 positions, on, off, and another one (im going to be heeking up a small strand of LED's) they will be coming from 2 different power sources. and can you tell me which wires would get wires to which number? thanks alot
If you look at your explanation about the DPDT, i understand why it's a double pole. But if that's the case, your drawing of the SPNO-SPNC should be a double pole too. Can someone please explain what makes it double pole or single pole?
I checked an indirect boiler water heater last night. I found that the water heater was the priority on the panel zone control which mean the control zone panel was on the o. Position. Turn off the heat, the house still hot. Need some help with that
Do you have a video on how to wire a time delay relay for a blower ?
Can you please also cover DPST-NO relays? Preferably 208VAC primary, 24VDC secondary, 30A.
Thank you for posting!
Remember when this guy played in that movie arachnophobia? Best movies he was in we dumb and dumber. From movies to hvac? Nice. I’m a fan! 😉
Hey. With a SPST do I bring power to coil? With a SPDT I understand why I would bring my power to the 4 terminal but is there a common wire that is landed anywhere. I'm just learning
Are they also referred to as peanut relays?
Dr Z I want to bypass the fan control board to my furnace (it went bad) I know I can use a relay can you make a video or direct me were I can get it.thanks
Have you worked on a 3 pole definite purpose contactor for 3 phase compressor? I have a commercial AC which has already burned 3 contactors. It marks 24V, 240v and other higher voltages. Never worked on this before, just wanted to check if you have any idea about 3 pole definite purpose contactor. Thanks
You should read whatever the control voltage is between 1 and 3 if it's calling.
Hello, I am used to line by line wiring from point A-B, now my new job has ladder schematics with transformers,coils ,relays,times and terminal blocks. Could you tell me the best youtube or book I can get to learn this ladder schematic? Thank You
@maxp8ntballer If you mean 3 poles, you'll need a 3pole single throw relay. You can get that type of relay in the cube type of relay.
I'd have to know more about the LED setup.
One of the best videos I've ever seen
how can you tell that a dpdt relay is bad with checking it by multimeter? across 1and 3 should have reading?
I'm so confuse about how to wire a relay, for instance I have a 120v 11 pins relay and A & B pins are coil relay. where should I connect incoming feeding wire (hot) and white neutral wire. Also I'm confusing with terminology for COMMON. What is referred to?
Hello,thanks for the info. I bought a spdt relay but just need a spst. Can I just connect the
line wires to terminals 2 and 4 and leave 5 empty? Thanks!
what age were you when you stared getting into the construction trades Dr.Zarkloff
i have an SPDT relay to fix my thermostat issues i am having with the Nest thermostat.
how do i install it? what wires go where? i have Y1, G, Rc, W1, and C being used on my thermostat
how to power the spst?? sir?? where i can put the power input?
@gmctrk63 Thanks for watching. It's an accumulative knowledge.
@gmctrk63 Thank You so much for listing me Sir , beside some of the Best Tech's I have had the pleasure to get to know , and become friends with including the good Dr. !!!
You are to kind !!!
Thank You !!!
Another Great Video Dr.Z !!!
hi DR zarkloff sir i would like to ask you a question , i have problem in Mani split air con the is York made in Chaina DC. converter 18,000 B.T,U the problem is out door fan motor after 20 minutes is motor going to stop after 3 minutes motor is going to restart but compressor is still ruining i have 1 replace the a new motor the problem is the same then i 2 replace capacitor 3, i replace p.c.board with the transformer for out door but sorry to say the problem is still the same i hope you will answer me for a better solution thanks & regards
sir can you suggest me what type of relay should i use..? that automatic turn on two circuits rapidly or alternately...after applying voltage to it..? and not taking out the supply voltage..! means automatic turns on rapidly..!?
so is it right I need to power the coil and then a separate supply for the common? or can I take a jumper cable for the positive side of the coil and connect it to common?
DR Z. I could use some help with how to wire a dpdt relay to reverse a 12 volt motor for my auto chicken coup door opener & closer. I have the limit switches , 12 volt timer,& 8 pin dpdt relay. Thanks !
Are these relays for heat pumps?
@tstatech Thanks. I like to make the videos simple and concise.
Hello DrZarkloff - I purchased a transformer 120VAC to 24VAC and a SPNO-SONC relay to use with my millivolt gas fired furnace and my new Nest thermostat. There was a video I saw 6 months ago that recommended the purchase of the transformer and the relay because the Nest needed a higher power source than what the millivolt puts out. Now I cannot find that video. I am trying to figure out which wires to connect to which. Can you help me? Please?
are you referring to the coil?
DrZarkloff I think I know the coil but not the load.
+Chantale Wong it doesn't sound like it was my video. I don't make gas furnace videos. I don't know how many millivolts your load is going to be.
Thank you so much now I knows how they work thanks
Thank you. Well explained!
@fritzhvac No problem, I enjoy your videos alot because we speak the same language,(Hey Yall).LOL I live in SC.
Yall keep making these informative videos and I'll keep watching and learning. Thanks man!
i cant grasp the need for normally closed on the relay? why would you want current running through while no 24v?
you want to turn something off when power is applied via 24vac. maybe your turning off an electric fence for one minute :)
thanks you for all the videos.
My air handler fan does not turn off. do think i need to change my relay switch. thermostat turn off and outside unit turns off but the fan in the air handler stays on. Help!!
Did you figure this out? Was it a relay?
Awesome video dr.
DrZarkloff good video,keep up the good work!
Nice video! I'm learning thanks.
quick question if you were to accidentally connect 24v to normally open position and 24v on the 24v position would it damage the relay?
no
thanks doc hope your right ill give it a shot tomorrow
@sparkyUonline Thanks for watching.
@christiangiba Thanks for watching.
Hey I was wondering what a schematic would look like if you had 4 relays each feeding a light , would it be SPST , because the lights must turn on and off ,
What would it be and what would the schematic look like
@PutSome5tankOnIt Thanks. I like to make the video as simple as possible.
@CHUNKY502 Thanks for watching.
Bhai stating capacitor or running capacitor kis kis me joint hota he ...vo batavo number
Can I ask what relay I need? I have a motorcycle horn I want to work only when my stock horn and mainbeam are on. Will I need 2 switching relays or is there a single relay I can use. Thanks for you help
you should be able to use a single pole double throw. You probably need a 12 vrf
you should be able to use a single pole double throw. You probably need a 12vdc coil.
excellent video doc
I have a 4 pin and the parts place gave me a 5 pin as a replacement. Can this work?
Yes
Ok I got a new install AC everything works fine but when switch to heat the heat pump works fine but lower inside don't come on yes heatpump
Armando Monreal What kind of tstat do you have? You might want to be sure that the tstat controls the blower.
DrZarkloff Honeywell 3000 I install in not sure on the one our vendor install he came in and said it was the Tatat the original one didn't have the switch for gas or heatpump on the backside so he just replaced the face of it I'm not sure if that's all he did
What about if I don't cross them cause I got a switch with 5 points 2 in the middle 2 on top and 1 on bottom what is that ? I think power is in the middle and then with switch power goes up or down it was a switch for a sunroof that Brock now ima replace it with a radio shack switch can I do that man thanks nice vid
I'd have to see it to be for certain.
great video the best i have seen thanks
Yeah man it's a 5 pole switch so I'm thinking is a double pole double throw switch
@V8Jagnut lol. I wonder would would happen?
Good video my friend.
great video, thanks.
Thank you. Amazing!!!!
Bless you
Very much helpful!!🔥🔥
thanks for the info friend i need this data
TQ sir, nice video
Thanks God bless
Such great help.
hac tech
Good job
@5tank why isn't my boat moving? Nah, just kidding. I don't know much about relays.
do u have a facebook fan page?
@DrZarkloff id say smoke, sparks and a bad smell.lol
Nice video
is it just me or is this guy Jeff Daniels twin?
@ramirez509 It is possible.
thanks dude
yes
@niper99 Thanks.
thanks
@achzdck Gotta love those 130 degree attics. lol
Good until the mass edit to loose track of what you were trying to say.
@achzdck Good advise.
On position I mean
do not connect the 24 volt and 24 volt common together.
agine good vid. ye should try puting one in a microwave.lol.
he sounds like Jeff Daniels
Sorry no.
@Metalcastr lol
hvac
Doesn’t make as much sense if you don’t show us with a meter. Good try
My ears hurt
