Great video folks!! :) We've owned a UA family for 3+ years now, and I'd spent ages comparing all sorts of competative offerings before we actually bought one - but still today (mid 2018), I'm convinced that the Urban Arrow family offers the best package in terms of usability (particularly w/two kids), handling, quality, looks and price. The recently announced Riese&Mueller Load 75 might become a game-changer though... ;-)

We actually took some footage this morning as we thought people would better 'see it to believe it' :) My wife did it alright-ish with the three in front.. there was some huffing and puffing and a short break at one of the side alleys (fortunately, there are a few leveled streets up Bathwick hill that you can nip in for a breath!). I hope putting a short clip of it soon.
Thanks for the feedback! Bathwick hill has a sign of 11% (I haven't measured myself). I just found veloviewer.com which states Bathwick at max 12.2%. you might find your hill there too :) I do a steeper one (Widcombe hill) at 14%, with the kids... only problem is that if you have to stop half way up (the 14%) then it's very difficult to restart and it's quite narrow too (unlike Bathwick hill) so is potentially dangerous. I think that as long as the road is wide enough you could at least give it a try.. 10-13% is my own personal safe limit with a cargo of 3 kids worth of 60 kg total.
Desperately jonesing for one of these in New Orleans. Despite having owned and raced an MX5 with no small amount of enthusiasm I absolutely detest being tied to my car (a shoebox. The Mazda is in pieces at the moment). Still deciding between the Urban Arrow and an original Bakfiets with the Shimano Steps kit but hopefully will scoop one or the other up in the next year or so.

We are waiting the delivery of our Urban Arrow. It felt a really great bike on a test ride. We are expecting to use the bike for many daily errands with kids and leave the car at home.
Thanks for the really helpful video; I will go for a test ride, soon. Living in a mostly flat, urban part of Cheshire, my main challenge is avoiding the really congested roads. There are many shared cycle/pedestrian paths, through the green spaces, but all with those gates and "slalom fences" to discourage moped and motorcycle users. The length of the UA Family might mean a few diversions for me.
Hi Kola, Sorry for responding so late.. I missed your question (doubt) which is a fair point! Two things I can say now after more than a year of frequent use. 1. Filtering through traffic is pretty doable. You are not like a normal bicycle but your width is pretty much the same. As a healthy habit I try to behave like a motorbike when it comes to filtering: i.e. always overtake from the right and keep insight of the cars' side mirrors (try even getting a look at the driver). Sometimes I wait behind a car like any motor bike would do. 2. Slalom fences are not as bad as I thought... you get used to them. Unless they are very poorly designed (older ones) but even then I manage by getting off and doing a few back and forward maneuvers. So did you get an UA at the end? I hope you got the family on two wheels by now.
Bath is a relatively hilly city and electric bikes are a great solution for such places especially because those same hills trap pollution in the city centre. I also cycle around Bath/Bristol. I use a folding bike that can be taken for free on buses and trains. The former are an alternative to electrical assistance for getting up those hills with your shopping!

I have a cargo bike already, but a very simple one - not very sturdy. So now with two kids, I think it might be time to upgrade. I'm considering this one, Riese & Müller Load 60 (has suspension) or the Bullit. Anyone with experience with these? I have tried both the UA and L60.
I'd like to use one in Budapest (HU) where it's also quite hilly. Do you use the normal battery (a so called Active) on your Arrow or a Performance one? Thx

Hi Vavann, Thanks for the feedback! I must be honest and say that the child sitting in the very front (on the bench closest to the front wheel) can get squeezed from the over head canopy, especially if he/she is slightly taller than the average 3 year old and even more so if he/she has a helmet on. However, the two sitting frontwards, on the bench closer to the handle bars, are fine (i assume for bigger kids too) as they enjoy the full height of the canopy. As for rain proof.. it is very durable and does the job. I'll add by saying that we found that you can sit a child facing forward at the bottom of the case - just in front and under the back bench. It's not ideal but sometimes more comfortable than having to bend forward if you are sitting in the front bench.

Not sure if I'll get a reply on this video since it's almost 3 yrs old, but do you still own and use this? And how is the balance of the bike when you have 3 kids in the front or a full load of groceries? I'm thinking of getting one of the new 2019 models (The Shorty) so I can get my full months groceries. Oh and how long does this last if you wanted to do no peddling at all? I'm thinking of opting for the double battery install and a couple spares to be on the safe side.
Hi Bruce, Here I am, sorry for the late reply... it's one of my most worked-on videos but I've been neglecting it for a long while. Yes, we still have the cargo bike, in fact, we are car-free for nearly three years and highly depend on the urban arrow especially during the rainy seasons. We've done more than 7500 km to date. The bike is great with stability as the cargo is well below the centre of gravity. We have an Xtra cycle with a crago at the back (for comparison), the kids being much higher there really make you feel unstable. Infact, when they are in the front of the urban arrow, the bike feels even more stable than without any cargo. Any cargo bikes that have a low cargo will feel stable. (low, means, I believe, lower than the body centre of the rider)
Very tempted, but I haven't got a garage, nor am I able to get one into the house. Sad really as Scottish Government are offering interest free loans for ebikes and ecargo bikes. Are your kids always that good!?
I'm not sure what kind of lights the Bakfiets Steps come with, we upgraded the lights that come with the Urban Arrow Family to a :Busch & Muller Cyo IQ Premium E-Bike light 80 Lux.... (copy paste from order) . As for your previous question (about uphills).. I'd just make sure the motor is strong enough (what make and power) .. unfortunately this can only be tested in real time. The Urban Arrow Family came with a Bosch 250 W and as I said, does the job just about for a 14 % incline. Good luck! It's really exciting!
barakimia Thanks so much for your help. We ordered our Urban Arrow yesterday (and did ask for a lights upgrade as you suggested). On another UA user's advice, we also asked for the brake pads to be replaced with the more durable ones that our posties use. Fingers crossed that it will arrive before Christmas (it's being couriered from Melbourne, which is 1000 km away). Thanks again!

My children are older than yours (6 and 10.5) and sit side-by-side on the main bench. Their combined weight is over 50kg, and I have found cycling uphill very doable. Sometimes I'm a little puffed by the top of a long uphill (around 12% for 500m), but I've never had to stop and walk. It is easier than cycling the same route with just me on my 21-speed mountain bike! We've had it for two weeks now and ridden 225km (it's Summer holidays and lots of fun to get out)!
Be warned - the small front wheel combined with the powerful disc brakes can make the Urban Arrow Family extremely unstable in low traction situations. In heavy rain or on tram lines/manhole covers the slightest touch on the front brake can flip the bike on its side. Check the Facebook group for multiple examples of crashes. If I hadn't been wearing my Abus helmet last week when I went over, I almost certainly would have had a brain injury. The very upright riding position adds considerably to the impact force, because your head pendulums so far before it hits tarmac.
After seeing your video a few months back we have now purchased our own urban arrow. Having so much fun on it. We live near Brighton and use it to go into town and go shopping weekly. We have found the only thing that worries us is security when you leave the bike so luckily our importer The Flying Dutchman did us a deal on the Abus Alarmbox 2.0 with it and now we can also alarm the bike when we are in shops. I believe that the assist itself will not help you exceed 25 km/hr but if you go down hill I even reached 59 km/hr (not recommended!). Our average in and out of town is around 16-19 km/hr

Why shouldn't it be 'safe' for children? You might argue that cycling, in general, is not 'safe' because there is very poor infrastructure for cycling and we are overrun by cars. But the bike itself is very safe. The stability is much higher than a three wheeled bike.
barakimia well when you put a child in car seat it has to be strapped in. Then the car itself is in a reinforced cage basically. In this the kids are totally exposed.

However, this is true for any bike and whether it has kids in it or just a regular bike with an adult riding it. The problem in this case, and it's important o raise the subject of general safety (so thank you!) is not with the bike but with the space we share with cars and with the lack of infrastructure which allows safe riding. Regarding straps: the bike comes with them (even though they look flimsy) and I can report that I had a few emergency stops (usually, when pedestrian pass our path in a last moment) and that the kids (and pedestrians) were just fine - no one falling out of the seats. Bare in mind that a bike goes at 20-25 km/hr max (I usually cruise at 16-18 km/hr) a sudden bike stop would not cause the kids to fly forward as happens in a car (for better and worse the braking of a bike is much slower and the bike doesn't go from 20 km/hr to 0 in a split second). In fact, I feel safer when the kids are not on their own bike when I cycle around town - just because I'm the responsible and do the judgment of when to stop, turn etc. I have to wait till my kids are far more confident riding in town and that they are more responsible and aware when cycling in the unprotected cycle ways we have around us. Fair enough, you can have a very safe bike but if the roads are narrow and full of angry drivers, that won't do much good either. The urban arrow has the kids well below the centre of gravity and I personally feel very stable when riding. I find it safer than a three wheeled cargo bike.
@@andrewg9457 Yes a car is a big cage. But how many are not that safe or the child seat used is not that safe. SUV's tend to be not that safe either. How long did it took to have back seat straps in a car? Most accidents happen because of poor infra and a driver of a car that is doing something else or just not paying attention. I have had drivers pass me and then pull on the cycle path just in front of me to park there. We have some road presence I would think. I even added reflective strips on the side of our cargo bike. I am careful and only ride 25kmh on roads where I can, in city centre I cycle at a lesser pace. If infra is better we can all have a safe trip around town. infra is the real key here.
In reflection, this video is probably a bit too long. I guess this is the outcome of trying to be both promotional and give as many technical details for those that are interested... I'm considering putting shorter videos covering specific elements. Please comment below if you have any constructive thoughts! :)

In such a area I would go for the performance or even new cargo line motor from Bosh. It has a higher initial torque and helps a lot.
Great video but Be careful and selective about your music. The volume is to loud. You have a pleasant voice and that’s enough.😌

I find the frontlight is good but the rearlight isn't very Bright

you can have big covers to store the bicycle outside but best is to store indoor. Safer.

@@andrewg9457 Yes a car is a big cage. But how many are not that safe or the child seat used is not that safe. SUV's tend to be not that safe either. How long did it took to have back seat straps in a car? Most accidents happen because of poor infra and a driver of a car that is doing something else or just not paying attention. I have had drivers pass me and then pull on the cycle path just in front of me to park there. We have some road presence I would think. I even added reflective strips on the side of our cargo bike. I am careful and only ride 25kmh on roads where I can, in city centre I cycle at a lesser pace. If infra is better we can all have a safe trip around town. infra is the real key here.
In reflection, this video is probably a bit too long. I guess this is the outcome of trying to be both promotional and give as many technical details for those that are interested...
