    I switched to VMware Workstation after a bad experience with Virtualbox. I can definitely say that the performance increase is drastic, especially on bad computers like my old one, and VMware tools were easy to install. I have had few problems with VMware, but have no regrets about switching.

    VirtualBox has always been my go to. But in my experience it is ALWAYS super hard to configure correctly. I spent the whole day today trying to get the configurations right to fix some problem with a Windows 10 guest, and in the end I could never figure out why performance was just not up to par even with 8 cores and 16 GB of RAM (I had plenty to give). I tried installing Windows 10 on VMWare and instantly out of the box it was as smooth as my host machine and it only allocated 2 cores and 2 GB. Not only that but getting my webcam and microphone to work was seamless out of the box unlike VB.
    I have a soft spot of VirtualBox but it seems like from these comments bad experiences are more common than I thought.

    2 things to say about on this video:
    1. There is a way to prevent easy install when installing Windows on VMware.
    2. The pre-configured option of a macOS Guest on VirtualBox can't even run macOS, probably because VirtualBox doesn't want non-Macs running macOS.

      @@NodmadTroy VirtualBox 6.0.24 is the last version before 6.1.0 was released, and 6.0.24 was the last version of VirtualBox to support PCI(-X)/PCI-E/AGP device passthrough. However, you need the VirtualBox extension pack to be able to do any kind of hardware passthrough, and this only works under Linux, and the last version of VirtualBox (6.0.24) and its respective extension pack to allow for this feature is at several months out of date. But, it does exist as a feature, and VMWare on Windows, regardless of version, doesn't support it whatsoever. I think VirtualBox is the only Type 2 Hypervisor to ever offer hardware passthrough, even if if only works on Linux, which has KVM/QEMU as Type 1 Hypervisor solution built directly into the Linux kernel anyway.

  • @VoidPaul97

    Just to clear things out: VMware can run macOS virtual machines. The thing is that since of Apple's policies they don't add it. Because unlike VirtualBox which is free and open-source, VMware Workstation Player is the free version of a closed-source commercial use program. There's a GitHub repo with an open-source tool that "unlucks" that feature (it's more like a patch tool). Now on this aspect VMware could be a bit hard, but the resulting Virtual Machine will run smoothly and with greater performance.

    Thanks for this - now I will download VMWare.
    Noob question, if I install VMware, and allocate some ram and memory to it, does it mean for my main machine (the OS without the hypervisor), the RAM will be depleted? So if I have 32 GB RAM physically, I allocate 8 GB to VMware, does my main machine only see 24 GB RAM? I ask because I do video editing on my main machine and I don't want performance to suffer because of this.

    • @jayit6851
      @jayit6851 2 роки тому +1

      Your guest machine will typically use the memory allocated to it. It doesn't remove it from your host machine but task manager for example will show all of that allocated memory as "in use". So if you have 32 GB and allocate 8 GB, your OS will still recognize 32 but show you are using 8 and you will only have 24 to work with for other applications on your host.

  • @Vili69420

    Pretty much VirtualBox handles your cpu better but has crappy 3d acceleration , VMWare has a bit more of a cpu performance hit but the 3d acceleration is on point and it allows of like 8gb of vram instead of the 128mb on VirtualBox.
    TLDR use VirtualBox if you are going to run like a small Linux server without a GUI and if u want a VM that can run games and stuff use VMWare.

    • @jayit6851
      @jayit6851 2 роки тому +1

    I’ve recently upgraded my HW to Dell XPS desktop with Win11, Intel i7, 32gb ram, RTX 3060T1 graphics card.
    Question: I’ve got legacy CAD software that runs under WinXP PRO SP1. The hardware still runs put the printer has died. New printer (Brother Laser) do not support WinXP. I absolutely need a printer for the CAD system. I’ve got GB’s of cad data I need to support. This is not a business, but decades of my personal work. So I need to get this working.
    I was thinking I could set up a WinXP PRO SP1 virtual machine on top of Win11. Install WinXP PRO and CAD from original disc’s (with key). and let Win11 handle the modern printer. Is this doable?

    A conversation I'm having here but want to express group wide to ask about what I'm looking for and what hypervisor virtualization software can provide it and it has been lacking in my earlier experiences with Virtual PC, for instance.
    I have a range of computers from different eras like a 98 laptop with 433mhz Celeron to the current. Will keep 98, install DOS, and Linux on the 98 laptop. Actually, DOS might be unnecessary here since W98 still has16-bit support. The Linux portion here will be the greatest challenge. All will be bare metal OS systems. Virtualization and emulation will be pointless here. As for newer systems, they will only contain bare metal contemporary era Windows with virtualization DOS and earlier Windows and current internet capable Linux distro. It's 2022. x86 virtualization and hardware should be capable and doable to support hardware including early DOS era Gameport, which has been lacking. I can go DOSBox and or Retro Arch emulation if I have to but I really want virtualization software to step it up with the hardware support to give me bare metal experiences.

If so which one? My motherboard only supports 8th and 9th gen Intel CPU's I currently have 32 GB of RAM on my newly built PC, thank you for your time.

    Using virtual box for Older OS like windows xp and prior

    I use VMware and VirtualBox,And from my experience on both,Let me tell you one thing:
    VMware is just better in virtualization than VirtualBox,With VMware,You can set video ram to more than 1GB and in windows 10,If you install VMware tools, Transparency will be auto enabled
    VirtualBox is better in running wider range of operating systems,It has support for macOS whereas VMware workstation does not (But VMware fusion has macOS support), VirtualBox has a great range of supported operating systems from windows,linux,macOS to MS-DOS,IBM OS/2 and other rare operating systems

    Snapshots. You cant make snapshots in VMWare Player which for me is a massive NO GO.
    When using VMs to test software installations you absolutely must have snapshots so you can reset to a know state prior to each test, and you definitely dont want to have to create a new VM each time.
