You should have a goal to pray for the blessed souls of Purgatory daily and also ask them to pray for you. I know how busy things can get and we just lose track of time. A couple of years ago I started saying Prayers in the car I turn off the Radio and Pray no matter where I’m going, to the store or on a trip . Try this sometime you will be surprised of what comes of it

So God tortures souls in Purgatory for doing bad things---missing mass, not believing in His Son, stealing a loaf of bread---and will only release those souls early if someone prays for them? while those who don't get prayed for have to stay for their full sentence of torture? Got it... (I hope I don't get sent to hell, or even sent to Purgatory for too long.)

Sorry to tell you that you haven’t got it. When we repent we are forgiven. But in return Jesus asks us to grow in holiness and charity. The sheep and the goats are separated by their acts of charity. Good works are our thank you to Jesus for His free gift of mercy. If we are careless or lazy in our Christian living then we may end up in Purgatory to be purged of our lingering attachments to sin. Pray for the souls and God applies mercy. We can trust His mercy and justice. Jesus teaches Purgatory several places in Scripture. In Matthew 18 He warns us we will not be released until we have paid the last penny. It’s important to repent and try to improve, with the help of God. Blessings
No, God does not torture anyone, either in Hell or in Purgatory. The people who experience Purgatory suffer to a greater or lesser extent depending on how attached they are to their moral imperfections. They suffer at the hands of God as a healer. The souls in Hell suffer to a greater or lesser extent depending on how much a child of Hell they made themselves to be. If they hate goodness and virtue, then, when they directly experience God who is Goodness and Virtue in Person, they will suffer because they won't be able to evade any longer what they hate.
