Little tidbit; Captain Falcon was designed to be almost a sort of mascot, a flagship character, for the SNES. While this ultimately failed, it's fun to see he managed to pull off being a flagship character anyways by being heavily iconic, yet not very close to his home series at all. Captain Falcon doesn't represent F-Zero anymore. Captain Falcon represents Smash Bros.
Tom de Kler Most of the moves are from the dragon king game. Since there's not any f zero games being made (probably since GX was so tacky on cutscenes), Falcon has been THE smash bros character that requires only thinking fast and reading, with some speed. No projectiles. All about fking your opponent with mind games and style. Making up your own moves and combos, etc. Smash 4 is OP $#!7 with those new characters and dlc for the new gen skylanders pussies that all want trophies, so Nintendo made armored up muthafukkas like little mac to give bad players a chance to win, or else the casuals would get offended. fuk those new generation. cruel world. toughen up. When Old Skool whoops their @$$E$, the new gen won't know what hit them. So they comment whiny $#!7. They should've played fast games like Guitar HeR0, Tetris, NFSMW2005, Halo... instead of playing minecrap, cawdooty, plants zombies, and skylanders
Isnt Falcon "in smash specifically" a Sentai reference/parody which is why he calls out attack names, and is doing a Kamen Rider kick in his smash 4 render
Another thing worth mentioning: Captain Falcon was meant to act as Nintendo's flagship character during the SNES's lifetime (like Mario had during the NES's time). However, F-Zero didn't see the same amount of success that its fellow launch title Super Mario World did, so they mostly kept Mario as the mascot, and Falcon kind of fell by the wayside. Even so, this may play a part in Falcon's inclusion in the Smash games. Despite not having the character development of most of the rest of the roster, he's a major part of Nintendo history, and Sakurai perhaps felt that he deserved to be in the game.
+1braker That applies to a majority of Smash's roster. A lot of characters get recognized more for their appearance(s) in Smash than they do for those in their own games.
Like if smash had to create one character that's actually from smash and not any other. it would be falcon the most sense be was the first character made before smash was actually smash
When he crashes into you in those games, it's like a shoulder tackle. He's a bounty hunter, it's the same as asking where most of Samus's powers came from.
+OfficialNinjaSkillz you're one of those that looks up shit of a character in a fighting game so you can say "I'm such an hardcore fan of this character i know all about 'em"
Drako Alpha Nah, I don't care for the F-Zero games i wanted to know at least something about the character seeing as i decided to focus my time with him :p.
sakurai pulled another ice climbers on the nx, captain falcon's bulge was too large, he has the largest 'SMASH' due to his bulge. They could not find a way to fix this feature, as with ridley, it's too big to scale down. Captain falcon was instead delayed for 2017.
6:30 the fact alax reference this editing bit he did 5 years ago in his most recent videos is ducking amazing. If you’re reading alax I love you man keep up the fantastic work
Would you happen to know the name or artist of the Big Blue cover at that time stamp? I can't find it anywhere and it's uncredited in this video. It absolutely slaps and I'd love to find the original.
Imo I think Captain Douglas Falcon himself is just the human embodiment of his vehicle. Falcon Punch may reference the strength of collision of the Blue Falcon and his Falcon Kick and Raptor Boost move reference the use of the boost power of F-Zero vehicles. His Falcon dive might be a reference to how pilots eject their dying aircraft/vehicles with a parachute, although Falcon might just jump out and grab onto a ledge or something. His running speed is fast.. just like an F-Zero machine. Might be a bit of a stretch, but that's how I see him. Can't say the same for his neutrals.. Most characters do just have original neutral attacks that don't reference anything in their original games.
3:33 Oh my god, Alax! I was literally crying from laughter! You've done it again! Ten stars! Funniest KYM yet! Also, I like the new Cat voice. Is that from Animal Crossing? At any rate, that was amazing. Never stop being amazing!
Good video, but... You never mentioned once the Falcon Punch's origins. Like, I get it's nowhere and it's first appearance is in Smash, but there has to be a reason! Like, why is it a thing? A super powered punch augmented by fire for some reason in the shape of a falcon. Was it put in simply because they wanted the character to have a strong punch and made it unique to look cool? There has to be more to it then that
+Ethan Schmidt Yep, there's basically no reason for mentioning it because it would be redundant. I mean I get you, I should have mentioned it but it wasn't the focus of the video. It kinda just became his staple move because his name was was Captain "Falcon". Maybe it could be traced to Iwata and Sakurai laughing while thinking up a moveset for him and then this would be joke actually became his staple move.! :D
+RelaxAlax I think there's something to say for Japanese superhero shows and their influence on Captain Falcon. The skin-tight muscle suit and the helmet that doubles as a mask are very Kamen Rider. The fighting style of crisp, clean, powerful moves is pretty similar. Naming your attacks "Your name + punch/kick" is a classic staple of the genre. Calling out the name of the attack even more so. My guess is that whoever drew that original Captain Falcon comic was trying to evoke that sort of superhero imagery. Sakurai saw that and went with it, since the character had no background anyway...
Old comment but the Falcon Punch still fits and represents the "*High Risk/High Reward*" area. If it hits, its VERY powerful. If it misses you are open to attacks and death.
In the original F-Zero comic, and also in the original games, Captain Falcon is very similar to Judge Dredd : he moves the same way, he got a very similar outfit, he do the same facial expressions, can be very rude at times ... But in the Smash Bros. series, he's depicted in another way, he do all of those sentaï likes moves that are not in the original game. It's like it's not the same character !
My Headcanon is that Smash is actually the Captain's game now. This is his franchise he co-owns with Master Hand and Kirby. *THINK ABOUT IT IT MAKES SENSE, REALLY*
+DeLisi I guess nobody wants to tell where the music came from at the beginning cause maybe both relaxalax and his fans think we're a bunch of squeakers that shouldn't be gamers in smash.
According to his Smash 4 trophy, he entered the tournament to prove his skills outside of racing. This implies he *always had those powers*, but never put them to good use in F-Zero.
+Can'tThinkofBetterName Which I still find incredibly stupid, since the only clone-ish thing about Lucario (in relation to Mewtwo, at least) is his standard special. I wouldn't even call him a semi-clone of Mewtwo.
far from it, hes a showing that Nintendo hasn't let F-Zero go yet if hes the mascot, why isn't he right on the front cover, nice and big? nope hes not there on many smash covers. definitely not a mascot for it
We can say the same about Fox MacCloud.... he is never seen doing his move set ether. well in The Game Theorists in Culture Shocking he is compare to a Kyuubi a Yokai, Im ok with it but still... I think u should make a recape of this video, he is a video game charater after all not a anime charater, his Move set was adapted to the anime, maybe to make up for it or for the charater... Well I love the charater and wish u can make a recape soon on the charater, even if his move set was fully develop in the anime, Some character in smash have some moves they never us or they us in some new game/anime, I really dont see it fair....
I always wondered why falcon had this particular style he got. He will forever be the coolest fighting character of all time. I'd wish he could be more present video games in general.
The last time I did some research on this I think the conclusion was that at least 3 different people have been known as "Captain Falcon" in his universe, similar to Robin for instance. Or they may even be separate universes.
Actually all of his flamey moves could be from inside his main vehicle the blue falcon since the car has some kind of bond to all falcons (there are 3 falcons) and can grant the owner some kind of power so that is most likely where his pyrocanisius come from
As far as I know, his moveset came from the development of the original _Smash_ game, before it featured Nintendo characters. There's a few pictures of it around, and the fighter characters in those pictures have moves resembling those of Falcon. Once Sakurai and his coworker(s) were allowed to use Nintendo characters, they added Ness and Falcon as characters of lesser known franchises as a bonus. Ironically both characters became possibly among the most popular in _Smash_ and better-known than their own games.
I also think it refers to him just being a basic fighting game character. Since when most people think of fighting games, they usually just think of some guy using his fists and feet and usually not like Mario flailing a cape or some stuff.
If you wanna go that in depth though, you have to look at his speed as well. His falcon punch literally bursts into a flaming phoenix. In order for a punch to burst into flames over such a small distance, in such a short amount of time, it would have to travel at MACH 23, from the get-go. that's 7683 m/s, and he reaches that speed in half a second... pretty fast.
There’s also the fact that the original Douglas J Falcon died and passed his Title to Rick Wheeler. So likely the C. Falcon in Smash is most likely either Wheeler or whoever would have succeeded him. My head canon is he is either Wheeler, whoever holds the title as the top player in Smash, or FM3K. Since Falcon is the Title that goes to the best racer (or in this case the best Smash player), and players like FM3K carry the spirit of what we acknowledge as the best, it just fits. And I like meta stuff. ^_^
+RelaxAlax This episode was amazing. I defiantly saw an up in production value, and its great how much better the quality of your videos are getting. Have you gotten a new camera as well? Cause, it looks much better than that other piece of crap you had before. Not sure about Cat's voice though... Kinda preferred the silent approach (cats don't really "talk", you know). Either way, I'm just glad I subscribed to you as soon as I did (roughly when Know your moves started), and see that we are going to have an amazing year on this channel. Thankyou Alax. Have a good one!
I can't wait for more Know Your Moves episodes. I really can't wait for the ones on Mr Game and Watch, Dark Pit and of course Master Dedede or King Dedede to those who don't look up to the king as I do.
Hey you know how Starfox and co. use g-diffuser devices for the foxfire, whatever his side B is, and reflector? That could be the explanation for some of the fire and boosted strength stuff.
Smash Bros. defines Captain Falcon. He's basically Smash's unofficial mascot at this point. His Falcon Punch is so iconic that they used it in the F-Zero anime.
Everyone keeps complaining about how Ganon doesn't use his sword.
I just realized that Falcon is holding a GUN.
I'll be honest
It took me until sm4sh to notice(I agree with you tho)
Makes sense for a Bounty Hunter
No more complaining from those people
I'm pretty sure he used it in one of the comics
Ganon gets his sword in Ultimate. 🙂
The F-Zero anime aired in 2003, thus meaning that the Falcon Punch, nor any of his moves, came from there.

Isnt Falcon "in smash specifically" a Sentai reference/parody which is why he calls out attack names, and is doing a Kamen Rider kick in his smash 4 render

His falcon punch literally bursts into a flaming phoenix. In order for a punch to burst into flames over such a small distance, in such a short amount of time, it would have to travel at MACH 23, from the get-go. that's 7683 m/s, and he reaches that speed in half a second... pretty fast.
what's the song from the dragon king the fighting game intro?
It’s the F-ZERO Big Blue theme
Okay but like why was that introduction fucking hype
I like the Banjo and Kazooie text sound effect. Nice touch. 10/10
Captain Falcon's moves were possibly inspired by the Peregrine Falcon AND the fact that he comes from a racing game.
You forgot about the Captain falcon anime
Yo, what cover of big blue is at 6:30, I actually can't find it anywhere.
Austin Glenn I've been looking for it myself. No luck either.
6:56 is the only picture I’ve ever seen with Sakurai smiling and it is beautiful
I know I'm very late, but I am wanting that intro song, but it seems I can't get to the video, hope someone who can help sees this
I love winning as Falcon you get to be cocky and blast the Remixed-ed version of the F-Zero theme
