    As a person who has very, very little experience in car repairs watching this video was great. I feel like if I set this video up on a screen next to me and had my gearbox out of the car I could follow this from start to finish (with a transition to the differential video) and rebuild the gearbox. That's so reassuring. Thank you for the upload.
    All I need now is to figure out how to take the car apart.. and then get the parts.. and finally tools. Damn.

      I did mine using a shop manual and trying to understand the extremely poor diagrams and weirdly worded text. Using this video and pausing it to do it step by step would be a 1000% better than any manual. Unfortunately there was no UA-cam when I did mine, or forums to ask for help, slow and painful was the only option. While I would never rebuild another mini gearbox unless my life depended on it, if I did I would be heading straight for this video.

    Watching your video reminded me of the terrors I went through twenty five plus years ago completely rebuilding my 1978 mini gearbox. The whole time I was waiting for the video to be over to end the pain, but couldn't stop watching. It's like watching a train wreck no matter how painful the memories I couldn't stop. Even back then every bearing was stuffed , every shaft worn to the point of replacement and syncros shot, I can't even imagine the search for decent second hand gears today. Shafts and bearing obviously replaced with new ones, but decent second hand gears, I cringe at the thought. Hopefully someone is doing reproduction new gears these days . Nice step by step video, but the lack of oiling the holes and assembling dry, hitting the end of the shaft with a metal hammer all very questionable practices for someone who appears to do this for a living. Also why no brass bush turned up to slide over the shafts and seat the bearings squarely. I had to resort to doing what you did for a one off build, but doing it for a living please invest / make the right tools for the job.

      There's no issues associated with assembling these gearboxes dry. This gearbox is based on the original from 1959. Cutting edge then, but not subject to super-fine tolerances and finicky assembly techniques. There are also no special tools required to assemble them other than say, circlip pliers and bearing pullers. Tony has built hundreds of these gearboxes and if the assembly technique were causing failures we'd have seen that long ago.

      Sorry but poor assembly techniques don't have to result in immediate failure to be bad techniques. I might be able to get away with assembling main bearings dry and not spin a bearing, but that doesn't mean the bearing won't suffer damage to the top layer of bearing material and shorten its life. The gearbox doesn't have any pressurised oil, and waiting for no absolutely reason to get oil to a dry needle roller with capped ends, on a dry shaft encapsulated inside a gear is just plain loco. Yes the gears are sitting in oil once the gearbox is filled, but it isn't sewing machine oil that will seep into every crevice quickly, it is heavy motor oil. There is a reason why every friction point is lubed before assembly in any motor / gearbox, it takes time for oil to get there. Take a look at some of the badly worn shafts you have in the shop, the severe wear is right where the needle rollers sit, overwhelming proof that lubrication to that point is marginal at best. As for the Poms not using specialty tools, you're kidding right, they are kings of the specialty tool. But irrespective if there is a specialty tool or not (and I bet there is) Gearbox building 101 would tell you never walk a bearing in from side to side if avoidable. I didn't have access to a lathe to turn up a simple tool that goes over the shaft and could push the bearing squarely on all sides, but you can bet if I was doing it for a living it would be one of the first tools I made. And holding the gear (specialty tool?) with multi grips is amateur hour, seriously how long would it take to make a proper handle for that so shards of steel can't possibly come off and go in the gearbox? As I say great video in that it shows clearly and exactly what to do, but we are going to have to disagree on some of the assembly processes.

      A couple of things. I didn't say that specialty tools didn't exist - I said they're not required. Yes, the gear that is held with the channel locks is a tool (it says "tool" right on it), and since it's outside of the gearbox the possibility of "shards of steel" getting into the box isn't much of a worry outside of your strictly theoretical take on things. Also, in Tony's defense, he has many specialty tools that he's fabricated over the years - not just for gearboxes but for engines and other things he works on - just as any experienced mechanic would.
      But, to be fair, I don't completely disagree with what you're saying. I mean I won't argue that it's wrong to use assembly lube on needle roller bearings. By all means, you should. Just understand that by your own admission your experience includes all of one gearbox rebuild while Mini Mania has been rebuilding Mini engines and gearboxes - and racing them - for decades. We know what works and what doesn't.

      lol granted yes only one "mini gearbox" that's only because I did it right the first time, but it definitely wasn't my first gearbox by a long shot, or my first motor (I built a 1340 for the mini). Sorry if gave you the impression that I was talking about assembling with lube, I would never use assembly lube on a needle roller, just plenty of fresh clean oil liberally applied.

    Hi , thx for this video , it show all the steps and make it simple.
    i have used also the A+ 1/2 and the 3/4 selectors, which have a harder springs ( i refere to those 3 springs inside the selectors ) and now the gear change had become also a little more harder.i refere to the gearlever from inside the car. Is this ok , or i had to use the older selectors? thx again

    Hi - Unfortunately, no. Mini Mania doesn't rebuild automatics. However, JPAT in the UK still sell internals for the classic Mini Auto gearboxes. They may even be able to answer some technical questions, as well.

    Hi I have a problem with my Mini in were the left indicator stalk has separated into two parts the small end piece and the one with all the symbols for horn and indicators but when i click them together and turn on the ignition the horn is on constantly. Also the main problem is when you try to operate the horn is doesn't spring back like it normally should what do you think i should do to fix this? thank you .

    so this is a 22g1128 casing?
    does anyone know the part number for the flywheel housing that connects to this as my mechanic says I chewed the bearing and the surrounding area on mine

    I am in the process of stripping one down and got to the point of removing the main shaft from the housing everything is undone and loose but the main shaft gets stuck on the housing where the bearings go is there anything I am missing to get it out

    Are you using A+ shift hub in that? , no, shift hub are not the same they have diffenent springs inside

    Hi, my mini is a 1300 injection, automatic transmission . I have a problem it goes on reverse very well but it doesnt work on driver nor 123. what can be the problem? please help

    Great video. But you put the selector knuckles around the wrong way. Male goes on the gearbox and female goes thru the diff.

    why did you not put oil on the part as you built up the gear box ?

      The gearboxes can be built dry as they are also the sump for the engine and the gears live in engine oil. It's not like building an engine where assembly lube is required in certain areas to protect the engine before the oil pressure can build.

    See 38:42. You didn't bend over the lock tabs under the bolts on the 3rd motion shaft bearing plate.

    Great video. I seriously appreciate it... but your editing is making me nauseous. It's like I'm watching it through a glass of water. The Editing is "bubbly" or wobbly. That's the only way I can describe it.
