Thank you so much for this incredible tutorial! You've explained each step and the rationale for each cut so thoroughly. Feeling a little more familiar with the procedure because of you :)
Very well explained, it gave me a very good idea of what I have to do since it will be my first time preping a molar. Just reading about it tells you nothing
Omg!! Thank you so much docs for so many valuable tips! I am sure I am going to ace my practical next week with all this new found knowledge! Thank you again!
wow...I had this done to me today..just wanted to know what the dentist did to my tooth. LOL and why it ended getting turned into a cup like shape. XD LOL! I never knew what a 'crown' was, so it was a surprise to hear the dentist telling me that i needed one, to prevent it from cracking more and needing a root canal in the future.
No reason to take the crown margins down to the gum line. There's plenty of ferrule without being that aggresive. If the patient needs a new crown in the future, the new prep margins might have to go deeper into the subgingival and that's a chance for big problems.
that's cool! I was asking Kriss AI about that, and it totally backs up the idea of minimally invasive dentistry, keeping as much of the natural tooth as possible for better long-term health. Just out of curiosity, are you a dentist yourself, if you don't mind me asking?

My dentist accidentally ground down a neighboring tooth during treatment, causing part of a filling on a gold tooth to be shaved off. What should I do?
Hello, I would like to ask a question about how do you manage the light while recording these videos. I saw in one of the videos that a dslr was bring used under loupe light. However is there is setting on the camera for canceling the harsh bright light shining on the typodont? I would like to connect and learn more
You hit D35. How can I reduce proximal surfaces fast and with good results without hitting the adjacent tooth? I think that's the toughest part about crown preps.
hi, according to kriss ai there is no specific minimum age set for receiving ceramic crown and bridge treatments, as the appropriateness of these procedures depends more on the individual's dental health and needs rather than age alone. however, these treatments are generally more common in adults and older teenagers whose teeth and jaw structures are fully developed. for children and younger teenagers, dentists typically prefer to wait until their dental and facial growth is complete before considering permanent restorations like ceramic crowns or bridges. i hope this is helpful
Gearoid McKenna This is meant more as a simulation lab demonstration than a clinically accurate procedure. Also, positioning of the camera is even more difficult with a rubber dam.
hi sir ! are u practicing dentist ?if a person has excruciating pain due to cavity and goes to clinic is there any instant solution to relief the pain and send the person happy and laughing instead of just prescribing pain kilers and sending the patient with pain and tears ?question is there any solution for instant relief or there is not in modern dentistry ?on 12.11.2021 during night i was eating chapati a tooth pain started all of a sudden pain with tears in my eyes .then friend told me use cloves .i chewed and spat cloves .it was fine little but todays is 16.11.2021 and pain is there and cant chew with that side and it is swollen though a day before it was little fine .can a dentist have instant solution?i hope my point is understood thanks.
This man had a tooth infection. The pain is sometimes very intense. The most cost effective and immediate remedy is complete removal of the problem tooth. If he waits too long the root will die and infection will set in and never go away till the tooth is removed. If he visits the dentist in a reasonable amount of time the tooth can be saved and repaired. A root canal will most likely be needed before the repair, otherwise the tooth is removed. Regular visits and discussions about what is happening in your mouth are cheaper than repairing an infected tooth.
I once had to phone another country to find out what cement was used on a patient while they were travelling, to replace the crown. Not all countries use the same cement.
why to start interproximally ? if you prepare buccal and lingual sides first, interproximal area will be more accessible, since the tooth got thinner, or do you have another thoughts?
It all depends on personal preference. I think starting buccal and lingual is perfectly fine if that is what works best for you. There's no right way to prep a crown preparation, and you'll find that often times in real patients you likely will be changing your approach depending on the tooth and situation. For example, you want to remove decayed tooth structure first, and that can dictate how you approach your crown preparation.
James Huang i do understand what you mean, and it is true, but i would like to know why someone follow one technique, perhaps it for something useful for me
Break contacts carefully with a 330, reduce the occlusion with a barrel shape bur and then prep your axial walls. if your prep takes more than 15 minutes in real world, good luck with your career...
@@najibadi that's nasty. I'm not a dentist but if I was, I'd rather spend another 15 minutes and charge the patient for it instead of ruining my patient's life.
Hi... i recently had a root canal and the teeth was prepared for crown fitting. During the prep there was lot of blood from my gums around that teeth... is that normal?...also its been 2 days and i feel a mild pain the gums... i see little redness and swelling... is that ok?
LOL i just learned about this today, my prosth professor was like "wreak the gum i dont care about the gum at this point, it'll heal, what I need is more vertical dimension!"
After a rootcanel done, don't the doctor suppose to put fillings on top of your tooth for higher lengths to place the crown on your tooth...and doctor anyone please explain to me, i am being scammed by southwest Dental, my tooth are not at any high length for my crown, my tooth are just a big hole inside my tooth with the crown, and now the crown has came off within 2 weeks..
Just started working with a new Dr ( he's young). I've always made great temp crowns in the past, but ever since I started working with him I can't make a decent crown to save my life, and by the way he doesn't pack gingival cord,🤦♂️!
Great prep 👍 Is this a Columbia or Kilgore typodont? Looks more like Columbia, but I know that University of Pacific uses mainly Kilgore typodonts, is that right?
Dear Dr, Thank you very much for your interesting video. Btw, which one is better for this training: electric handpiece vs air-driven handpiece? Best regards
If 5he crown is having a hard time fitting and the dentist already filed the crown down is it normal to file down the healthy tooth above the one they are working on?
@ John Doe Typically over ten years but there are definitely people who have crowns for over 30years. I have patients who have crowns for over 50 years
I went to southwest Dental and they're suck, one of my tooth chips, but i wasn't in any pain, after i went to the dentist he drill my tooth, and add filling to my tooth, after a few weeks i was in alot of pain, then i went back to southwest Dental, i said i was in alot of pain, dentist doctor said i need rootcanel, well by listening to the doctor i have a rootcanel done, they charge me again. They after they charge me alot for a crown, which i was ok, but what i dont know is that the doctor didn't put no fillers on my tooth so after the rootcanel there was a hole in my tooth, and the doctor just put the crown on top and inside of my tooth nothing to support, it was bothering me so much, then the crown came off while i was eating...just want to said southwest Dental are after your money only, doctor there are so stupid.. and they don't care about your wellbeing, they want to hurt you even more so you will continue to go, and they always blame on other issues so you can spend more money on them....
Sounds almost like what people say about Aspen Dental. Go to a different dentist, preferably an independent one, and get a second opinion. If it turns out they really screwed it up then consider contacting a lawyer. I know when I had my root canal they filled the hole with some kind of special gray filler before putting the cap on, though that might not be the same for every case, I'm not a dentist after all. They also discounted some of the services to put the crown on because they tried to fix the tooth with a filling first and it didn't work.
So you had a deep cavity, they tried to fix it with a simple filling to save you money. Ended up needing to to a root canal and crown to save your decayed tooth that you didn't take care of all your life and then the fixed prothesis fell off and I am sure the replaced it at no charge but you are acting like a victim?
Question: I have read a crown can last 10-15 years. Does this mean the tooth will no longer be suitable to support a crown or can a new crown (or original crown) be refitted to the tooth?
A crown prep would have to be done again if the crown needs to be replaced. The dentist would also have to remove the original crown first. We get patients all the time who get crowns replaced after 20+ years. Sometimes crowns get replaced early because of open margins. An original crown will never be placed on the same tooth. Especially if there was decay beneath. Always best to have a new crown fitted.
Is the interproximal cut with needle bur initially for the contact point and widened up with the shamfer? Also, is the angulation on the interproximal 5 degree as well ?
