I don’t think she meant to give him that on accident,She was really interested in that story that Aunt M and told her and she just wanted to share it and if she thought it was very interesting.
This canonically happened to the Tinman. Each part of his original flesh body got cut off and replaced with a tin replica, including his torso and head. In a later book he has a horrifying conversation with his former still-living flesh head.
“Let his flesh not be torn! Let his blood leave no stain! Though they beat him, Let him feel no pain! Let his bones never break, And however they try to destroy him, Let him never die! Let him never die!” -Elphaba, “No Good Deed”, Wicked The Musical
She essentially gave him immortality with this body. He's stuck like this literally forever. And according to Morrible "a spell from the Grimmerie can never be reversed".
@deathrideroftheapocalypse8708 The guards of the Emerald City captured him and strung him up in the cornfield to punish him for helping Elphaba. Believing they were going to torture him and kill him she tried a spell from the Grimmerie to make him practically immune to pain and death. But she didn't know what the spell would actually do and it turned him into a scarecrow.
fiyero-crow when he realises he is having an esitensial crisis and want to go to elphaba: im ok im fine, just need to hang in there until i see elhpaba. realises elphaba is likely gonna murder dorothy for dropping a house on her baby sister and stealing the shoes she made for her: crap.
Fiyero after being told about the ship of Theseus: This is why I said not to think! This is why I said you're happier if you don't think! If you just don't think about these horrible thought experiments they can never get to you! cannot resist thinking about ship of Theseus
That’s terrible advice most people don’t have to worry about what the ship of Theseus means for them, besides not thinking about can ultimately give you temporary confirm just because your not thinking about the problem that doesn’t mean it still isn’t there, you can still be happy while learning to make well informed decisions
THIS POOR MAN HAVING THE ABSOLUTE WORST TIME. Another stellar job, glad I could assist on this one! Honestly adds so much with the slow zoom on Dorothy and the shaking effects, just . . .this is so good I'm going to watch this a zillion times now. What can I even say at this point that I haven't said already, you guys are AMAZING!
Fun fact, that’s the tin man’s story too (separated from the Wicked lore) He was a regular lumberjack who’s axe got cursed to cut of one Limb every day, a but a Tin’s man helped him rebuild his body under there was nothing original And the Tin’s man gathered his old cut up body parts and glued them back together to make a Frankenstein’s monster to give to the lumberjack’s wife
More than that, the Tinsmith rebuilt two guys out of tin, first was Nick Chopper( Tin Woodman) and then Captain Fyter(Tin Soldier) who both successively courted the same munchkin woman Nimmie Amee, the Wicked Witch of the East's servant girl. After the Tin Woodman left because he was heartless and The Tin Soldier rusted in place for a year, the tinsmith took the leftover flesh parts from both men and created a new person called Chopfyt who then married Nimmie Amee. There's even a point where Tin Woodman talks to his original head (In OZ you can't really die) and the head has no memory of being Nick Chopper or anything beyond being a head in a cabinet, meaning that The Tinmen are indeed their original selves.
1:52 DANG CHILL DOROTHY NO NEED TO GO THAT HARD 2:15 Had me crying fr. Very interesting thought process and the fact it was coming from Dorothy was hilarious. This interaction will make the scarecrow think twice before asking Dorothy what she is thinking in the future! Cool animation, voice acting, & dialogue!
Auntie Em: Dorthy Have you ever heard of Schrödinger’s cat? It’s the theory that an outcome only exists when observed. Schrödinger: What a great theory I’ll be sure to discuss it in 30 or so years after the year this conversation we are having canonically takes place
Easy answer. The original Ship of Theseus doesn't have a "soul" to consider in the ship's design- the scarecrow clearly does. In his case, unlike the ship, he is quite literally more than the sum of his parts- he is also the overarching will that coordinates those parts in life. Unless he was, like, losing parts of his memory or something with every part replaced and all the parts-with-memories could then be re-stitched into a "new original" strawman claiming to have the original ego, the guy has nothing to worry about.
Thinking about identity and personhood is a never ending spiral. There’s a reason why there’s a bajillion theories and thought experiments. And since he can’t sleep, he has hours to just sit and think about it without interruption. How can you be sure your memories are real and not just implanted by magic? It’s impossible to know since the soul is immaterial. What in a soul identifies you as you? If his memory gets wiped, but his soul is the same, how would that be different than being a completely different person?
I will never not find sweet and innocent characters casually saying something super dark without realizing they may have just traumatized someone or some people deeply hilarious
That's only half the question. The other half is "If you were to gather all the pieces you removed and reassemble them, which ship then is the original?"
Well, since the scarecrow is a sentient being, we can consider he's just like one of us, a human, who grows and replaces our dead cells little by little. And if the answer works for a human, it works for the scarecrow.
Dorothy gave Scarecrow PTSD just by talking about a story her aunt told her. Why do I get the feeling that Scarecrow is going to regret coming with this kid for her safety?
She was lucky she didn't mention the second half of the Ship of Thesis Where the old broken pieces are reassembled free of damage Then there could be two Scarecrows wandering around Oz
Slightly off topic, but I love how after over a 100 years the imaginable talking Scarecrow from a dream being called just a Scarecrow, Hundreds of thousands of people accepted in less than a year that his real name is actually Fiyero after watching one exceptionally good movie, despite the fact that the musical have been around for decades now. This is pretty much how legends such as that of Robin Hood and King Arthur were created, with someone adding something new every few decades or centuries until we get what we have now.
Scarecrow: If Ill get new brain will Ill be the same scarecrow? Will I forget my past life? Will I forget Elphaba!? I dont want that! Maybe I should stay dumn forever!
2:22 Incase anyone wants to know what he said: “I’m a scarecrow, but I used to be a man. Am I even who I was before? I don’t even have any internal organs. I’m just straw, loosely bundled together inside an outer shell of clothing. Can I die? How much of me can I loose before I’m lost? Not knowing the answer is maddening! WHAT AM I?!”
Well, in Oz, yes. The Tin Woodman chopped up parts of his body until he was completely made off tin, thanks to the Wicked Witch of the East. He retained his original personality. His ex-girlfriend even ended up marrying a man made from his reanimated corpse, Chopfyt, who had a completely different personality. Granted, he also had parts from an old soldier thrown in, too.
Alphaba: oh calm down you drama queen, you’re obviously still you even if your scarecrow body gets replaced. Fiyero: how can you be so sure? Alphaba: because you are a concious person and not A BLOODY SHIP. Fiyero: oh, right. Alphaba: Im starting to think you DO need a brain.
The answer is simple he is still the same soul just different body. Like when you make an alt account it’s still you just different body. Note this is only the case if the being has a soul. The ship is just a replica and before all the pieces are made it’s a replica in progress.
To be fair, Dorothy hasn't put him in any actual danger yet by her own actions. If anything, she's the only one helping him unless her dog is doing something that we don't know.
It's obvious that he's now a demonic spirit possessing the scarecrow and will always exist until the magic that binds him to this mortal plane fades away. He's kinda like Dorothy special familiar in some way.
and thos ladies and gentlemen is why children are seen as monsters in most horror movies featuring them cause they can say the most disturbing thing in an innocent little voice and then laugh as though it was a joke.

Dorothy: gives scarecrow an existential crisis

Truly, a beautiful friendship.
