Not only is this a solid trick, but I love the fact that Brian has been introducing his daughter to the world of Scam Nation. I teach a magic class in the fall and I always tell the kids about what a great resource these videos are.
2:12 Loving that super casual "you don't have to do that" when she's about to start mixing las vegas style by spreading them around the table possibly messing up the orientations...
Yup, caught that too :p Two things that make a good magician. 1) The ability to be this chill at critical moments. 2) The ability to change to a totally different trick if something goes wrong.
@@evantilley Yeah, one of the key things in magic is that the spectator doesn't know what the trick is supposed to look like. So if something goes wrong, you can (hopefully) switch to a different trick and come back to the one you wanted. Otherwise, there are plenty of tricks that have "multiple outs," meaning there are various endings you can use. One of them is usually pretty mind-blowing, and the others are cool. But since the spectator hasn't seen the trick before, they'll be impressed regardless! :)
Only thing i have is that you should be cautious with letting the spectator shuffle - i know people who, in the process of shuffling the cards, invert some of the cards (some people do it when they riffle shuffle) It's probably a good idea to see how your spectator shuffle cards prior to doing this trick :)
I saw Chris Ramsey's version, Where he shuffled the 'non-physic' deck and ask the spectator to do the same, this should help not disorienting the deck. PS his version end up mixing the entire deck together, which is more convincing to me
I used to pretty much always put my thumbs at the top of both packets and then spin the bottom packet between thumb and pointing finger to set up a riffle. It looks like a cool sort of move, but I re-jigged that habit after seeing a magician friend's look of despair when I unceremoniously botched his brand new trick. So, I was once *that guy* lol, but we both learned a little something about spectator management that day.
The scam nation is undoubtedly one of my favorite UA-cam communities. It’s hard to find negativity here. Love the dad daughter magic trick videos, the energy is great.
Ohhh, she could've pulled a great gag on you, Brian. As she was going through identifying possible cards and she dealt yours in the reject pile, she could have gone through the entire "hand", pick up the "possibles", concentrate really hard, bet you a soda that the next card she flips over is yours... and then fish through the reject pile for yours to flip it face down. :)
If you forgot the orientation of the "Psychic" cards you are holding you can do it like " hey, I feel like there is a non"psychic" card that is in hand right now" (pick somewhere in the middle then put it on the garbage pile)
I love this trick! Like you, I've been doing this since I was very young. I notice you haven't used the 8's. If you look closely, you'll find the 8 of Hearts, Clubs, and Spades are also one way cards. They all have 5 pips facing one way, while 3 face the opposite way. It's a bit more subtle than the 9's, but they work.
You could actually use one more diamond...any diamond. If you don't see any card flipped when looking for the chosen card, then you will know it is the diamond with the symmetrical design.
Man, that's crazy I was in the exact same situation you were: learned it when I was 10 or so, liked it and forgot it until I realized how clever it is! Thank you for reminding me!
The things that I think can also be added to this trick to make it even more difficult to figure out: 1. Try to pick like only black cards first and then, when spectators will be like "well, he's simply picking black" surprisingly pick something like 7 of Diamonds to confuse them a bit more. 2. Also I think it's a good idea to pick one card like Queen of Hearts to make it even more "random". The thing is that if you can't see any upside down card then you know that they picked the Queen :)
Yep. Even better if you can come up with little "stories" as to why some cards are psychic and not others. I find it helps to distract from the real reason you're picking the cards. For example, as a guy, I can get rid of all the diamonds with the "girl's best friend" line (maybe keep the "lucky 7"). Also, the Q♥️ fits perfectly because it has a significance beyond the face value.
Awesome! My great uncle who got me into card tricks when I was a little boy, younger than your daughter taught me about this when I was 7 or 8 and I was amazed. It's great cause not a lot of people know about it
My dad did a variation of this trick where after picking the special cards out he would give you the option to swap one of the cards with the discard pile; I guess it still works since if they pick the one card with symmetry, all the other cards are the same way around and you can get it by process of elimination.
i am totally loving these videos. something about "if she can learn this i better be able to" really makes me hope you do more of these even after quarantine is over with. (shes a better co host than that other guy LOL)
I already knew what the trick was by the time you were picking the first two cards :D Very simple yet magical... That was the first card trick I ever learned
One danger whenever you let the audience member shuffle is that they'll mess up the orientation. At 2:13, she asked if she should do a wash, which you had to prevent her from doing. I first learned to shuffle from my father, who plays bridge. Since many of his decks of cards have backs with orientations, it always bothered me as a young kid that the way he split the deck and squared the cards would always rotate one of the piles. When I was learning to shuffle, I was very conscious to avoid doing that, just to preserve some small bit of order. However, since I know my father always mixes the orientations when he shuffles, I would never be able to let him shuffle the deck when I perform this.
I love how this was one of the first I learned in scam school and the moment he started picking cards I knew it was it :D thx for remembering me this exists
I seriously love the interaction between you and your daughter. She needs to be in episodes even after the lockdowns are over. Yeah, I know, she can't go to a bar but maybe a coffee shop or the like?
I love this trick. I make a game out of it - tell them that you ARE reading their reaction (bonus hilarity if they're not sober), and they get super focused on "getting better at hiding it" each time you do the trick, to the point where they never figure it out, no matter how many times you do it.
I think it's more elegant if you only use all the sevens and all the aces. The ace of diamonds is symmetrical, so if none of them are flipped it's the ace of diamonds.
I actually performed this at a Christmas party in 2014 after I saw it on Scam School. Super easy to perform, but you have to watch the orientation of the card in their hands very closely.
It's been a long hot minute (couple years at least) since I was last watching Scam Nation content. Today I started bingeing for some reason and I have to say I am really enjoying the Brian/Josie episodes. She's a smart kid and it makes for an adorable episode, and then I got to the blockhead episode... and boy was I squirming (as intended I suppose lol) and it just reminded me how much enjoyment parents can take in tormenting their offspring hahaha - in a good hearted way of course
I do add one symmetrical card to the selected stack, to confuse critical spectators. If they randomly choose that card, there is then no card in different orientation. If they like to inspect the deck after the trick, this is a convincer... :-)
If you want to make the trick feel more personal, you can add in the following two details: * Only use cards that you and the mark 'agree' are psychic. You only ever offer the asymmetric cards, but they feel like they have some control because you let them discard some. * Let them go through the pile of non-psychic cards and pick one cards. Tell them to infuse it with their personal psychic energy. Add that to the pile of psychic cards. (Complain that their energy might interfere with yours, but you'll fight through it anyway.) This obfuscates and distracts from the card picking process, and makes the deck you've assembled seem more fair. You then do the trick just as he says. There is one exception, in that if nothing is flipped, you know they picked the one symmetric card by chance (therefore, you can always put it into the maybe pile).
Dudes please stop i can only do the simple stuff ny entire routines are built from this stuff i had to watch years worth of video's and now you put me out to dry :-) love you guys really
When Josie accidentally put the psychic card in the wrong pile, I thought she was employing the old magic/mentalism trope of appearing to mess up, but then correcting it at the last moment. If she pulled that off, it probably would have blown Brian's unsuspecting mind.
“Sounds like a terrible brand name. Enjoy Fist Toast!” That’s a great brand name imagine the marketing puns. “Fist Toast: fistfuls of flavor that’ll punch your taste buds with every bite!”
I saw you picking a bunch of odd values, so I thougt about it had something to do with it. Then I saw the 6 and then realized how it exactly worked at that time.
• 5:52 - But the five of hearts isn't symmetrical. • 7:46 - "I _do_ have to look." 😂 That'll definitely sell it. • This one definitely needs a bunch of practice to memorize what you consider "up" and "down".
Hey Brian, I can't wait to see you teach Josie your truck Naughty knotty (tying a knot while holding either end of the rope)... I wonder how many do-overs she'll ask for before losing hope?
Good morning, Brian Brushwood. Josie has a psychic abilities to find a selected card from shuffled deck. As a little magician she is most popular among her friends. We expect her a healthy long smooth happy life journey. She is a great little magician of the universe. She is a master in the art of different card shuffle. We miss Josei for all the time. I'd say the 6❤️ and 9❤️ are pretty similar, unless you're looking at the pips. I actually thought that was a really good pair to end on, specifically because they're similar, but not similar in the way that really matters!
I do a variation of this trick. But select only 5. Then ask the spectator to pick 1-4 cards. One of the card can be symmetrical, sometimes also figure cards have their suits in the middle. My deck has two I can use. It makes it very hard to see any patterns.

Thought Brian was gonna say “I was gonna ask if you showed your friends but then I remembered you don’t have any”
I had nam flashbacks at that part
I was expecting the same.
I did too, so sad
W Reams I was thinking the same thing
Oh damn ouch
2:12 Loving that super casual "you don't have to do that" when she's about to start mixing las vegas style by spreading them around the table possibly messing up the orientations...
It was only when he explained how it worked that it twigged that it wasn't just a casual comment.
At 2:12:
Her: "Should I do the cassino wash?"
Inside Brian's mind: "God please no!"
Brian: "Nah, you do not have to..."
Yup, caught that too :p
Two things that make a good magician. 1) The ability to be this chill at critical moments.
2) The ability to change to a totally different trick if something goes wrong.
The technical term for this is spectator management. Or parenting in this case. Funny how they overlap.
@@andymcl92 interesting yeah I always wondered like what happens if they do something like flip the card, then I guess you'd have to change the trick
@@evantilley Yeah, one of the key things in magic is that the spectator doesn't know what the trick is supposed to look like. Clicked on the vid for Scam Nation. Stayed for Josie’s personality. You’re a great dad, keep up the good content!
Same here she has a hell of a personality

Jacob Rixen Yup, that’s why when she wanted to wash the cards he was quick to say “no you don’t have to”
yeah, the way I typically riffle shuffle turns half of the deck upside down compared to the rest (for each shuffle)

Where he shuffled the 'non-physic' deck and ask the spectator to do the same, this should help not disorienting the deck.

That actually used to be a common carnival scam
@@vbkfivn Yeah, it's also covered in another Scam School episode.
That's a great twist.
This series of Brian teaching his daughter is honestly the most adorable thing I've seen lately that isn't a puppy or kitten.
This girl is a star! Quick witted, personable, and adorable. The dynamic between daddy and daughter is so wholesome and enjoyable to watch.
Brian: "Only cards I have a psychic connection with." Josie: *Knowingly* "Right..."
I can't even with how adorable the two of you are together. 💚😁🤜🤛
Fist Toast! Essential for making a good knuckle sandwich!

Just watched james grime on numberphile, and now you on scam nation. Night totally sorted. Love from India
I just started watching the channel recently with some of the newer vids. As a father of 2 its always crazy to see how much kids grow in a year
I’ve been a magician for ten years. Screw him teaching us magic. I’m more happy that he is interacting with his daughter in such a cool way. Good man
