The UK's political landscape changed significantly since Johnson's 2019 election, with the Tories facing challenges under Rishi Sunak, who is now considering the timing of the next general election, with recent polls showing a significant lead for the Labour Party. While Sunak has tried to reposition the Tories on various issues, it still remains uncertain whether an early election would actually benefit the party. But, could there be a general election by the end of the year?

_I think the most dangerous aspect of the election will be the apathetic non-voter. The less people vote, the more likely we will have more extreme points of view getting through._
Lots of people may gravitate towards voting for Starmer, who is part of the trilateral commission. Nasty agenda, look it up.
the lowest turnout in the last 100 years was half way through the last Labour government, when everyone thought it was a foregone conclusion that Labour would win again ... they did, still with a large majority, but less so - and at the next election the turnout went up ...
That’s why I like Australia’s compulsory voting (technically compulsory showing up at a voting office and ticking your name off a list). It also means that it doesn’t profit the government to make it harder for certain people to vote because, hey, they have to vote anyway so all you’ll be doing is annoying the voters.
Probably right but it’s difficult to want to pick which guy in the firing squad is going to drive the bullet into you. So most just close their eyes and expect the worse regardless of what colour tie the morons are wearing. I guess decades of relentless incompetence in the HoP does that to a population.
The Tories cannot call a snap election - there are too many Tory MPs who are standing down at the next GE, and the party is struggling to vet all the prospective candidates they need to replace them.

Just goes to show you how busted our system is. Who is in the cabinet is so immensely important, and yet us voters can barely affect it, and it can just completely change without any input from us.
The average Tory MP, if such a thing exists, is actually quite a good constituency MP, just like the average MP of any party. There are some high-profile disaster cases but those are in the minority. So people need to look at their voting record and see if this is agreeable, in addition to whether they like their local work.
It's actually depressing that there's even a slight chance the Tories can win. After all they have done they're now pretending to be the party of 'average people' GIVE ME A BREAK. Love TLDR and love the board of leaders that they bring out each week, looking forward to the next podcast!

It's much better to have a system where party's are encouraged to get rid of terrible PM's early in order to try and turn their fortunes round before elections than to have one where they're going to hold on to their bad leader all the way because removing them triggers an election and likely loss

Sanchez called an early election for the same reason Sunak would, because now its a good moment for them.

I mean, more working class people voted for tory than labour in 2019, the poorest parts of Britain voted tory. The idea that somehow only the poor and downtrodden join labour is just pure fantasy. Labour's voter base is mainly In the wealthiest parts of the country and Uni towns. You do realise, most people, rich and poor prefer lower taxes and free markets. Radicals like Corbyn and farage fail to get anywhere electorally. Boring centrist like Starmer seem to perform much better

An election before Spring 2024 would probably be optimal for Sunak, the immigrant boats will be at a minimum during the bad weather of winter and he can claim its due to his policies

I think they are, I've noticed councils are sending letters and emails recently asking you to update who lives at your household and who is registered to vote, this tells me that a general election will happen within the next few months

Pedro Sanchez made a brilliant move of calling an early election since he was behind, what went from Trudeau and Theresa May was that they were ahead and got cocky. The issue for Sunak is while Sanchez was behind by single digits, he is down by around 20.
That part of Boris Johnson's speech just goes to show his level of TV viewing is still alongside the average 6 year old watching Sesame Street.
Not a Brit here so no dog in the fight but just looking on as an outsider, it seems that if they do pull the trigger, it may be more of a ploy to limit the damage than to actually win it. Sort of like letting Labour have a win instead of a rout.
Yep that is definitely a strategy. But if you are an mp who is likely to loose your seat the extra time on the gravy train with wages and expenses benefits you personally more than the party.

I'm pretty confident that no matter when the election happens, the tories are not staying in without a collation deal (and even that's unlikely).
I'm actually hoping for a Labour & Lib Dem government where the Lib Dems have near parity in the house to Labour - I wouldn't say I trust either but it would be the best of several bad options (my ideal scenario is literally impossible under current law, so I only have the bad options to choose from)

I think we're looking at an election some time in Spring. But Sunak is keeping his finger hovering over the button mostly to keep his party in line. They know the party has to appear United if there's an election so he adopted an election footing. He also might push the button if it looks like his leadership seriously going to be challenged. In the very unlikely event he's deposed I suspect the new leader will call an election almost immediately.
Considering that there is a non trivial chance that Rishi himself might not be able to win back his vote, I'm not sure if those calculations add up for the Torries at all!

Yeah it was abused by Corbyns labour and they refused an election despite the government being totally unable to do anything. It was repealed after that disaster because the alternative would be a limp government having no choice but to remain in power, being held over a barrel by the minority parties
Waiting till next year is only good for the torys if sunak has any ideas that would actually make anything better for ordinary people, and the will to implement them. He hasn’t shown any signs of having either of those things yet. Without that they’re just going to keep sliding further down into the hole they’ve dug for themselves
Bit of an odd decision by tldr here. Ulez is a public health measure that affected clean air. It is not a environmental net zero initiative. They are not the same. Also didn't point out that the tories bounced Khan into expanding it by being awkward with funding.

I like to think of it this way. They stopped people seeing loved ones who were dying alone and literally went to parties.

Sunak has been the Prime Minister for year. If he had the political skill to turn things around, we would have seen some of it by now. Instead of addressing the problems that voters care about, he was rambling about boats and trying to hold the party together. Nobody in their right mind would actually believe that the tories care about the enviroment. Moreover, a party that claims to be competent in terms of economics wouldn't raise trade barriers to their biggest trading partner and spooking investors by a horrendous "mini" budget.
I'm not a Brit but a close observer of British politics. Sunak is desperate and trying to limit the damage at the next election. They're gonna lose. The question is how bad it's gonna be.

2:40 You slightly misrepresent the repeal of the FTPA here, before the FTPA it was entirely up to when the PM when an election could be called (ie. they could have terms as long as they liked), now the act that repealed FTPA also includes a provision that automatically dissolves parliament after 5 years, forcing the PM to call an election. So most of the provisions of FTPA are still there, it's just that the power of calling the election moved back to the PM.

NO, the voting population did NOT vote Alexander Boris Johnson as the MP. We DO NOT have a presidential system. The Tory party had the majority of the seats and he was the leader, that is NOT voting him as a person as the PM.
He was the most popular choice amongst the conservative membership, and the voters voted for a conservative party headed by Boris Johnson

As a non-Brit, a quick question - if there's no law saying they need to have a general election at any specific time, why would the current in-power party EVER hold an election unless they're sure they're about to lose a majority due to party members retiring or similar reasons?
The limit is 5 years so an election can be called at anytime within the 5 years. It used to be enforced that the election had to fall on a certain date but an election could be held with the consent of parliament but the system was abused by Corbyn and the labour party forcing a limp government to stay in power while refusing to go to the public for an election so the Blair reforms were undone and its back in the hands of the PM
I may be wrong but I believe that there was a law passed that made it a legal requirement to hold a general election with five years of the last. I really hope so, at least there would be some hope of getting rid of this toxic filth.
Hello non brit, there is a law saying they HAVE to have a general election, the video is wrong if it stated this.
"The maximum term of a Parliament is five years from the day on which it first met. The current Parliament first met on Tuesday 17 December 2019 and will automatically dissolve on Tuesday 17 December 2024, unless it has been dissolved sooner by the King.
Polling Day would be expected to take place 25 days later, not counting weekends or any bank holidays that fall within this period."
Law requires that the King dissolve parliament every 5 years (i.e. call an election). That the government can call one as they please is just a side effect of the King being the one to dissolve parliament, because he basically can't refuse advice from the prime minister.

There is, its called a no confidence vote. We can't simply remove democratically elected governments because of a couple of polls. If a group of MPs want to launch a credible no confidence challenge in Parliament then they can but if the government still has authority and confidence to pass bills in the house they have every right to remain.
Because the only mechanisms to do so involve either the King entering politics, which would result in there no longer being a King, or the MPs passing a no confidence motion, which requires a majority, and because being the government also requires a majority, a number of the MPs in the government party would have to vote against their own party. The only other option would be referenda, but it'd probably take some kind of no confidence motion to start a referendum, and at that point the MPs could just vote the government out anyway. There's no easy way to figure out what the people want except through elections.

The tories have not been all that good for you guys, and they have ruled for some 13-ish years now. A change in government would probably not be a bad thing. it is weird giving the PM the ability to call an election though all on his own, given that the PM and his cabinet should be beholden to parliament, and not the other way around. It reduces parliaments power, and in periods with minority governments it seems like it can be used like a threat to let the government get its way, if the majority in parliament feel badly about their electoral chances at the present moment

Also the whole idea of "were going to negotiate a deal with the EU and then put that deal to a referendum which would ask our deal or remain and we would campaign for remain, essentially saying they will negotiate a deal which they would then campaign against their own deal in another second referendum" totally ludacrous policy and you can see why Boris won with the simple promise of "get brexit done"
