  • My 8 year old Grandson joins me during hive inspections.
    This is the status of the hives on July 13th.
    No evidence of disease.
    Layens needs mite count + given two extra frames.
    7-Frame Apimaye Nucleus hive gets a super.
    Standard Langstroth marked the queen.
    10-Frame Apimaye not ready for super but will be in 7 days.
    A strong nectar flow is ahead, we'll be ready for that.
    Thanks for watching.

    This was excellent episode!! You're increasing Quinn's learning curve like crazy with the bees, this transfers over to other things in life. I look forward to seeing his progress as time goes! I'm also thankful to see your Indepth inspection of the Layens hive, your videography is worthy of awards! Thank you for sharing this with us!

    Greetings from southern Ontario! I cannot thank you enough for your careful close up segments - I am still learning to identify various stages of brood development and seeing the close ups, really helps me doing my own inspections. Cheers, Marie-Louise

    Nice layens progress! You just reminded me I need to check the long lang for space now that it’s cotton nectar season! Hope Quinn gets some honey this fall! He’s making great progress in his new suit! It was my 7 year old niece Paige who dragged me back into beekeeping after a 40 year hiatus 5 years ago. Kids are special. Especially the smart ones!

    Hello Bee Inspector Quinn and Grandpa Fred. . .😁
    Good Job doing the Apiary needs. Hope the Honey being made is good stuff. 👍
    Here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 it's still been Wet, wet, wet ! 🌧🌧🌧 A really Soggy Summer ! 😵‍💫
    Any Honey here has been 'made then consumed by Hungry Bees ! Maybe Autumn (Fall) might dry up a bit. Only 16C (61F) No heatwave here.
    But I am as Happy as a Clam :
    Several of my Colonies have raised some 'awesome' Black Native Bee Queens ! Two seen in two Hives Yesterday ! We did have decent Temps 'while these VQ's headed out to Drone areas ! Good Laying pattern seen. 👍
    Didn't have the 'Correct Colour' Pen to hand (2024 = Green) so I had to wing it with an 'Orange' Pen. Rather neat seeing a quick moving 'Orange Dot' Zig-Zag the Frame ! Grabbed the Mobile (Cell Phone) and took some Footage ! A very Newbie Video maker ! Still to work out how to upload such a thing. I'm from the 'Steam Generation.' 🤭
    Sure Quinn will ace all this in due course. Grandad is definitely a 'Pro' so he has the 'Prof VT' to help grab that Bee Inspector Clips. Sure to have his own Channel quicker than me. . . Comment answering is easy, uploading, er, ah, eck. 😉

    Despite my Bees (Mutts) being fairly Dark (eg 70-80% AMM)
    I recent took ownership of x2 Black Native 'Breeder' Queen Bees. They settled in real well.
    And this coming Weekend : a Bee Supplier 'Sale' opportunity offered good deals on Carniolan* Queens. So x2 are on their way. They do well in Cooler Regions*.
    Think UK closer to Slovenian* Weather and hardy Bees than Stateside 'heatwave' types. 🤭

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому

      Yes, I'm a fan of the Carniolan line as well :) we have a darkening trend last year, but the lighter color has returned in force this year. There is a lot of cross breeding going on, and the stock remains robust overall. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great weekend :)

    Man, I'm so jealous that you get to work with the supervisor. My son just turned two and I've already got him a bee suit. Can't wait to take him with me for some hive inspections. Sharing with the family is a great way to learn more.
    I don't use those queen clips at all. I've had multiple queens slip out from different clips and different manufacturers. If I'm marking queens for sale, I usually use the marking tool that look like a crown of thorns and pins directly into the frame, or the one handed catch.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому

      I find it best to just grab them with your fingers :) Quinn is the master of nabbing them with queen clips. I agree, several of them don't quite seem to be closed up enough to prevent escape. He has been out in the bee yard since he was 2, and his confidence was high as he always wore a complete bee suit so he could just sit and watch landing boards :)

    I really like the way you CALMLY verbal pop quiz your grandson...a wonderful way to understand where his level of understanding is and you can train him in a fun way for a young child. I like your positive reinforcement method when you tell him...very good or that is correct, etc. And if he gets it wrong you say...are you sure, let's think about that answer. A hardass would make a child less likely to stay with it. A hardass--HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU, WHY CAN'T YOU REMEMBER, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU, I'M TIRED OF REPEATING MYSELF, CAN'T YOU LEARN ANYTHING, I DON'T KNOW WHY I BOTHER...WHAT THE HELL.....: )

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому +1

      He actually loved his oversized bee suit, until I got the right size for him :) He is definitely a hive tool collector... :)

  • @mocarp1
    @mocarp1 Місяць тому +2

    Since you have trouble with overcrowding in the layens, you should donate the natural comb Layens honey frames to the Supervisor to sell cut comb. He can squirrel away a portion of the proceeds for his post high school education/training.

    • @FrederickDunn

      @@FrederickDunn I suspect that the financial institution he is using for startup capital lending would frown on a written business plan that included hocking "borrowed" hive tools?

    It looks like Apimaye took the stays off the frames that used to keep the foundation straight. Must be a trade off to help the bees use more real estate on the foundation, since they avoided them in previous iterations.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому +1

      I have to say that the Premier foundation is very deformed. This could be due to heat in transit, but you have to really pay attention to what direction it bows out.

    PS.
    My 'Queen' also dodged any pending Clip. So in the end I rested the Frame up at an angle, waited until she stayed on the upfacing side of said Frame. Can aid her Calmness by placing your Finger Tip in front of her as she 'moves.'
    (Aka wants to scuttle off to the darker side and hide.) 🤭
    She will with a bit of patience remained 'settled' for x10 Secs or so. Carefully do that Dot (Mark her Thorax) in my case with that 'Orange' Pen. . .
    Guess 'Orange' is my'Own' Raised Queen Bee 'status.' Maybe sdd some Green on top of that, in the next Inspection. (Need to find my Green Pen: in all my Bee Stuff ! It's there, surely ? The 'other' Year Colours were seen. Now where did I put it, for safe keeping???🤭

    Tip :
    Recommend giving 'Marker Pens' a good Shake up. Then Prime (press down to get a good Flow on eg Cardstock.)
    Then eyeball your 'Queen' and do a gentle 'Dot' with that loaded damp small covered Pen Tip. . . Done. Phew ! Art in Action. 🙃

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому

      Thanks for sharing :) Yes, definitely make some test dabs to prime that tip so you don't have to press on the queen at all. Good stuff!

    How cold do you get most winters ? Do you like poly hives better than wood ?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  Місяць тому +1

      We get lots of snow, and it does drop to the single digits. The Apimaya Hives are definite weather shields, but our standard 3/4 thick wooden hives are vastly improved by the insulated covers. If I lived in a colder climate, the insulated hives would be what I would use year round.
