LG V50 vs Sony XPERIA 1: The REAL Pro-Grade Camera Showdown!

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- LG V50 vs Sony XPERIA 1! FIGHT! Sure. Some companies spend a TON on advertising a "pro" camera, but then cut manual controls which pros might care about. I just got the V50 in house, and before I have to send the XPERIA back to Sony, I shoehorned in a little camera comparisons. Better than just advertising a "professional grade" camera, these two companies really offer up the goods. Which camera takes the top spot? Let's battle!

The only person reviewing any LG or Sony phones
Realy. Honor to JUAN
Well - Yes, so the LG V40-STAB it's almost the same cameras setup. V50 Snapdragon 855 and V40 845 snapdragon. BUT lg V40 has more bands (66-71) just way more 4G LTE bands, LG V50 has stupidity design - no barely 4G LTE bands but it got a spanky new 5G,.. now go ahead and wrap your head around that ones?
Another stupid move on both company Tmobile wasn't pushing for an LG V50,. So you gotta either hunted down an Europe or Korean unlock (maybe supposedly factory) model W/no 5G.
@@BjayawesomeBlackDude it's the only flagship tht has a no camera bump and uses tht space for a huge ass battery
I was expecting an image/video quality comparison.
Hi Juan. Can you do some coverage about stock editing on the phone for both V50 and Xperia1 ?
Appreciation for talking about someone besides Google and Apple!
Juan, you always do a great job of diving into the pro mode features of these cameras, but I have to ask... who do you feel these OEM's are targeting with these features? Do they really expect people like Michael Bay or Stephen Spielberg to use one of these? I'm speaking in hyperbole of course, but I trust you see why I'm questioning the motives behind these "pro" modes.
They make them for everyone. If you're spending more than $400 on phone, why not give access to a platform which you can learn and improve on? Even for folks who shoot full auto, using the manual mode in full auto guarantees the highest quality video is captured.
wait theres a v50?
I just broke the screen on my V30 😭😭😭 few days after I cut my insurance on it 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I loved my V30
Too bad Xperia 1 will flop because of the price
for the price you get free wireless canceling over the ear headphones that cost $300 - $450 which is very expensive if you buy it sperately...
@@icewallowcome_daily9802 not many people will give a damn about that, overall this phone is too expensive
I'm team Sony (I like their overall UI better than LG's), but this is a great comparison video. Like you said it's refreshing to see unique options like these in the smartphone market. Quality stuff as always SGG!
Sony rocked my socks on the XPERIA1. It's huge to see this kind of camera control on a phone. If this is their first gen, i can't wait to see what they do next.
The UI looks good on Sony (it looks like LG bl40 21:9 camera ui), the UX is meh
Yap Sony UI almost like Stock Android.. So much clean and smooth....Pixel only new guys... 😊😊
I'm good with both but my carrier in this area doesn't have 5G and I don't project much but have done such and may get a stray hair to do such . So Sony has my money . Plus like Juan the simple box design is not only trademark Sony mobile but a separate standard that makes them a breed apart and a standout .
Pixel for point and shoot.
Xperia 1 and the LG for the options
Still waiting for LG to release their new phones in Europe...
And in South East Asia.... They pull the plug in most SEA market being G7 is their last phone
Same here in Singapore. The V40 is still the "new" phone.
@@ZulqarnainAidil u got V40? Indonesia is on G7 and even G7 is hard to find but they keep advertise it... Sad
@@laurents1906 Maybe its "officially" available in Indonesia, but the stores may not want to sell it.
@@ZulqarnainAidil nope it's from LG Indonesia they said they stop selling phone here but they will still support the warranty and repair for their mobile division.
Recent news is they will comeback and not 100% Quit Indonesia. Even on Erajaya one of Biggest indonesia retailer stop putting LG on their Website... It's sad... On the other site they just do G6 clearance again and again... I can't confirm when they will come back im sad... Im stuck here with my V20 im planing to get V40 but they never release it here....
Lg is the under dog, have a v20 for over 2 years now, never regretted, audio 2nd to none, v50 is my next buy.... Go LG.... It easily powered my HD6xx
Me to dude. My v20 is hands down the best quality phone I've owned. Hold out for v60!!! It should have cameras that can go toe to toe with pixel and huawei plus still have 100% better audio.
Im torn on buying it, i like the korean 8gb 256gb lgv50S but its almost imposible to find the S model anywhere
Also a v20 h990ds owner! amazing phone
Does the lg v50 have. " cine shot" or
" moving picture " features?
LG is the only company to expose auxillary camera ID. I'm currently making GCam for Pentacamera. You can't do the same on other multi camera phones (1+ & Xiaomi need hacking for this)
@@valluckloa3424 if im not mistaken. He meant about LG's Gcam has aux option where you can switch from normal camera to wide angle camera
@@valluckloa3424 some gcam app mods has shutter speed, iso and manual focus.
@@valluckloa3424 no, gcam doesn't have manual settings for videos. Im not sure about xrays too.
What he meant is LG is the only one who provide information about which camera is which, letting developers easily build an app that can use all the camera in the phone.
I can't live without focus peaking in this LG G7.
It's so huge an advantage. Drives me nuts more don't offer it.
@@1fareast14 i doubt that... (owned S10+)

Thank you for covering so many details. Doesn't the V50 also have receiver as mic recording? This is very important when recording in very loud environments without overpowering the microphones.
Cries in Nokia 9 Pureview.
There is a UA-camr guy knowing the truly potential of nokia 9P.. tbh the photo is awesome tho
Well for true to life photography, n9p is the best
Excellent comparison bro! I need to pick up a G8 for my external audio capture.
Talk to me before you do...
@@SomeGadgetGuy Hello! Hopfully I can get some input when you can! I am looking at the LG v50 and the lg G8. I am looking for the best camera specifically in "portrait mode" (using front face camera) I got the chance to use the G8 and the pixel 3 side by side today and thought the G8 was incredibly impressive! Color balance and potrait modes were similar but LG G8 had the edge on contrast and showing actual color. Now to my question or help needed.. Does the LG v50 take the same type of pictures in selfie mode? Or are they similar? Or is the V50 even better? I couldn't find the v50 today in stores to test it. Any imput would be greatly appreciated! Thank you
As Sony fans, LG never disappointed at all..,😉😉
If Sony really wanted to attract videographers, they would let you record in XAVC S
@@valluckloa3424 XAVC S is the video format that they use on their Alpha cameras.
@@CenturyOfCid well the thing is that their alpha division does not want to collaborate much, because this will lead to dilution of their camera sales ( atleast according to them) , I read this in a report
@@indragarg2857 The new head of their phone division is from the imaging division
Sony has the tendency to make something new, but let others to bring it to perfection ..
LG too.
A sad truth
lol i still prefer my V30's manual mode for listings on ebay largely. The room to curve via snapseed and manual focus is priceless. It was especially good when i was taking photos of my S10+ :)
Ha!
Savage lol *Typing from a V30+*
;)
I was waiting for you to cover this. Though LG has not released v50 in India and the rumours about a v60 coming soon I wonder where is LG exactly heading towards? I feel they should focus on timely software updates (better if they just go stock) and give the wide it's damn manual controls. And having a headphone jack in this era makes me love LG even more Sony should have kept the jack.
Thanks for such great reviews Juan!
I really can't agree more except one thing that they should allow bootloader to be unlocked rooting lg V series makes it a mutant beast. Just because how crank hard bootloader they made on LG V40 discouraged me to buy it.
Update thing seems improved for v50 it gets security patch every month
They are selling us ayear old product, lg v40 is priced competitively around 37k, which makes the phone really a good buy and most indians buy phones for selfie camera with good white filter so they can feel good they don't give shitt about other things just need filters thats why companies like vivo oppo are dominating indian phone market and companies like xiaomi are not innivating such cool features
@@TheAshuV Iam an Indian and selfie camera is the least important factor for me when deciding to purchase a phone. Software, performance, brand reliability and rear camera quality and versatility are far more important for me.
Most people don't care about when they get software updates that shouldn't be a reason for purchasing or deciding on a phone.
It is so annoying though you cannot use the second and 3th sensor... like why? Not to mention how the app has some weird things with Sony....
While I get Sony can focus more on Manual which is fine, there is no reason for Automatic to not do well?
I mean don't get me wrong in sunset and colors it beats Samsung with better colors most of the time, but man it is a shame how it falls short for those who don't use manual controls
It really is ALL OR NOTHING. Would be nice to have a little halfway, but once you get used to using manual mode, even if you leave all the options on auto, there really is no going back.
@@SomeGadgetGuy that is somewhat of a fair statement. But if you want to sell to the bigger groups I don't think you can walk that path? For me for instance gotta be fair, manual mode (apart from b-roll I just hardly use it because I don't plan to shoot something. Neither do I like it when people see me take a picture so I just do it like undercover automatic haha. (also my lack of knowledge on proper Manual mode prevents me from giving advice in that because it would be false information)
But I do get what you are saying though. Manual mode simply does allow for much more freedom and amazing results!
I mean take the Nokia 9 pureview. Man seen some shots that are AMAZING!! with manual it could easily beat some other big dogs. But it's automatic mode was "meh"
As good as the V50 is I'd go Xperia 1 for notchless screen.
Sent using my G7.
The LG notch is software only and can be removed unlike iPhones.
i got my lgv50 and i love it. i had the lg v30+ before and its a pretty good upgrade. especially in the video/photo department.
@Sperm 1 go for it you will like the lg v50
Outstanding bro, magnificent, stupendous & very refreshing review even if I really love Sony it was a pretty balance comparison
Can you plssss do a comparison with these against iPhone XS using filmic pro ??
Iphone XS camera is shit when is comes to features i am not talking about software features but hardware one
@@anandsuralkar2947 no. iPhones still record best video compared to any android phone. They record in highest bitrate and they have amazing color and dynamic range in videos. Check out Tyler Stalman & DPreviews's Pixel vs iPhone XR video. Or any other video comparison.
@@rph_redacted Disagree. Check out the Cine Log video from an LG V30, the image comes "as is" from the sensor with genuine gamma curve without enhancements and fits almost the whole Rec.2020 color space. Is not a video for media sharing, grade it and you will get a proffesional output here.
Seems LG never get to mention these days except for your channel and that's a shame. While the likes of Samsung do a way with any pro mode in video and get all the Limelight and reviews along with other manufacturers that do nothing Pro in video capture.
But which one feels really good in the hand?😁
The one not made from rusted rebar... Obviously...
I see, you know the procedure :D
Ladies 😏 you know the procedure...
Sony Xperia offer best camera. They beat Samsung and Apple easily. But, problem with them is their pricing and Dismal Marketing.
As expected lg v50 is a better phone.. but it is a leap forward for sony.. so much improvement especially in camera department with xperia 1.
Really leaning towards an LG, which is surprising me. But my biggest uses are audio, (including wired audio), still photography, and social media, and my dealbreakers are bloatware and screen vibrancy/resolution. My Galaxy s7 has spoiled me with a pretty screen but 3 years on i'm deeply resentful of the carrier and Samsung OEM apps (leaving me with triplicates when i add a version i actually like!) taking up an unconscionable amount of its storage. LG seems a little more reasonable there.
I'm a little wary of not getting timely software updates with LG, so I think my next choice might be Nokia and they're missing a host of midrange options that have the 3.5mm jack in the united states and I'm not sure I'm committed enough to import. I liked your G8 videos a lot, I guess I'll have to sit tight as you work with it for a while and see if I should go for V50 instead.
I really love listening you and you are the only one who emphasis on audio.
been waiting for so long lol , hello V50
I love my V30+, the cameras could be better to be honest.. but I do love focus peaking and manual controls for everything including audio
The LG V30 camera SUCKS!
Anything indoors or low light is crayola finish dull photos.
I give two SZhyts about focus, operation bla bla... Any camera can take overall good pics at daylight. A good top notch camera, like all iphones do, is taking pictures at NIGHT.
Your review is useless.
Am here to see grain free colorful sharp images on fluorescent or incandecent light.
what happened to the background music?
I just bought a LG v50s instead of a regular v50 coz of the extra ram and underscreen fingerprint, now i dont have a telephoto and suffering from lower screen pixel density
Yeah. 50S and 8X were kinda transition phones.
Good video but you missed a few points for the Xperia.
Didn’t touch on the picture profiles which can change the look of video, or demonstrate what HLG video looked like once it was graded, or if the LG even shot HDR Or what it’d look like. People interested in making content won’t just staple together raw videos without applying some color grading or look.
Seems like an incomplete comparison...
LG also has picture profiles, quite a lot of them, you can color grade the video however you want, and the LG does shoot in HDR, I have all of that in the V30, so I expect even better from the V50. He can't show you an HDR sample in this video because all of it would have to be HDR and would look bad for people who don't have it. Maybe he can upload a sample of each phone.
TheFPSPower it doesn’t have to be raw HDR but something graded to look like it? And I wouldn’t know the LG had picture profiles because that area was completely omitted from this video. It would be nice to see what those looked like because I’ve seen the ones on the Xperia and they look cinematic.
You are the best my friend. LG lover but Sony is great too.....
Using V40 thinq is so love 💘 how is V50 thinq
I have the v20 v30 v40 and v50 the v40 and v50 are so close i wouldnt recommend an up grade for most people its not needed that being said the v50 is a great phone but so is the other v series phones
You know I'm pretty biased for Sony. I always have some kind of Sony around me. This review really impressed me. Other reviews are just full of crap. We need more "Professional" reviewers like you.
Love from India.
😊👍
It still baffles me how hard it to include a native raw support on an Xperia phone. The flagship Xperias are almost always so well made and they always lack that little something, be it a more than great build quality, excellent sound or full raw capture. It's as if they're always deliberately take a step back for no apparent reason. And I truly think this will be the end of Sony mobiles.
fu24's gcams actually enable the v50 to output juicy raw from all 3 rear cameras.
Honestly the most hyped video on your channel 🚀🚀🚀
This answers my earlier Q Juan of which phone for pro photo video in a phone. I'm pretty bummed out that the manual mode can't control the tele lens. I dunno where I heard that the tele was also in the manual mode - V30 maybe?
Given that it doesn't operate the tele in manual, I think Note 20 is still the best option as you can get Moment case, ND filters (very important, especially without light leaks) and various lenses from Moment. With AIS+OIS. If Samsung had all 3 lenses on, with LG's app like control, and 10 bit video, or even raw, then they'd cannibalize the world of phone content creation (but stupid is too stupid to know they're stupid - at least let 3rd party apps do their own thing).
Whatever Samsung doesn't give me I can get with mcpro24fps/filmicpro/Moment (and a half a bag of moneeeeh).
LG v50
So how good is the v50 compared to the v40? Is the Sony worth the buy at the price it offers ? Wish lg would do something new and be creative like they used to be. I really like LG.
I switched to Verizon to get the V50 and got a great deal to boot!
@@Tigerex966 I got $450 for my V40 trade-in and a $200 gift card to switch carriers.
Hello.
Could you please make a video on the G8s thinq. I have the G7 and I wonder if the G8s is a cool upgrade ( G8 not available in my country)
Hi sir juan which is better in camera performance with this two phones LG G8 thinQ or LG V50 ThinQ ?🤗
I really enjoy both my Xperia 1 (main) & my V40 (back-up). Currently watching & commenting on this vid from my Stylo 4...my internet wifi surfer. Really want that V50 &/or V60, but hots to get that Op7P or 7T first. Thanks for the vid
I'm looking forward to the LG G9 / V60 that quad dac headphone Jack is amazing. Bluetooth headphones just don't cut it.
You are so right about Bluetooth headphones or earphones for that matter, it never cuts in because of latency lag and that's before I even mention about battery life. I was about to get myself the Xperia 1 until I see the V50's headphone jack, and that was it - goodbye Xperia.
The G13 will be great next year.
If Sony stops making smartphones, I will immediately switch to LG just because of the camera features.
A small side note i do own the v50. With the last update ive gotten the manuel control of the tele lens has been removed. Sad face! Now im stuck as you sad in the video with the "normal" and the wide. Greets from Switzerland
The update ive mentioned is from the 2. July
I've managed to find a way accessing 4th & 5th camera on third party apps. Support for manual tele video too. +GCam lossless 3.5x zoom
Very well rounded. However, I think you missed a very important factor for any content creator that may at least get the two awesome devices back to a draw again and that is the professional grade screen on the Xperia 1. What's your thought on that, sure would like to know.
@Felix Aglon thanks for that one. I read the article and yes it's a big disappointment to see how Sony has falsely marketed the feature. It would've been much better if they hadn't said anything like that at all. Though the panel isn't bad it's the claim which is false.
How does LG v50 go agaisnt the pixel 4a? Camera quality wise...
I am searching for a phone... i have seen lg v40 lg g8s Samsung s10e which is the best for videos and fotos
You need to make more of these🥺 ON UA-cam
6:40.... that is so true... as most of the reviewer on UA-cam just shoot some pictures and videos on auto mode and compare them then call it a day...
Camera comparisons are getting kinda dull.
Let's be honest, the vast majority of consumers will do just that, leave everything in Auto without any care about manual setting.

Sony's camera software processing camera is shit
I had some bad experiences with the earlier models (V10, V20). I loved the phones until they stopped working.
Maybe it's time to give the V series another look :)
I've been REALLY lucky with my V series. All of them still going strong. The G5 was my "cruddy" LG.

Yo! That Sony phone is looooooong AF! 😂
Battery life on the V50?
Now the camera app on my Xiaomi Pocophone F1 feels really from the past century. The F1 camera app UI is so damn slow when you switch from photo to video mode. It literally takes 3 seconds before the shutter button is ready to be pressed. Plus additional seconds before recording even starts.
I'm crying now.
I don't bother with Pocophone F1 camera app, I downloaded Gcam ( Google camera app ) apk and use it all the time to take photos. Google night sight is good.

I'm still sporting the G7thinq. Is the camera on the v50 or G8 worth the upgrade? Or wait for something better to happen. I'm an LG fan and am happy to wait :)
BTW I just found out that all lenses work in mcpro24fps and the phone does 60 fps in 4k on all lenses. Not sure about high FPS.
I need that dual screen
LG and Sony phones are pretty underrated. There marketing just sucks. So sad that they no longer sell smartphones in my country because of low sales :(
It is More on features reviews rather than the actual outcome of the picture quality and video .
That's the thing, it's so hard to decide which has the best picture quality and video as they are absolutely similar.
Sony very expensive😞😐
Sony is better looking
You look like Morpheus.
I went from original iPhone X , to s8 active, now I have lg g7. I prefer the lcd screen over oled. Easier on my eyes.
Thx for covering these subjects no one cares on the Ytb area, & that few would cover properly anyway ;)
I generally have to go on stores & investigate into the expo models, to discover what's there, & what's not...
Of c, LG is in none of those stores, so that's why we're here ^^
Since in EU, LG is playing with our patience like ghosts in Packman, I chose the S10 for specific reasons, & I'm h... not fully happy, but I find the overcomings to every quirk, ending up with a pretty nice set of productivity.
For Instance, I will buy an app I didn't want to so far, to get full manual controls on other phones than the kings in this video: Filmic pro. Pricey, buggy for many according to reviews on the PlayStore, yet now the compatibility improved with Galaxy's, so I'll give it a shot, as I found no reliable alternative, & it still allows most of what I'd get with the V50 or Xperia 1 (except audio quality of LG, but the DAC is decent, & I have extrnl XLR mic so I'll live with that; + I've the V20 for audio only situations, eventually).
good review
In terms of focus peaking, I've found that there are only two phones capable of doing that, while reviewing them, and that's Xiaomi Mi 9 and LG V40. Such a useful feature. But in an age where Samsung takes away manual video controls (including the latest greatest Note 10), and companies like LG Mobile and Sony lay off their mobile division staff, it doesn't look like manual controls are here to stay. It would be great if at least Filmic Pro, would work as good on Samsung phones as it is on iPhones, LG and Sony (Xperia 1) handsets, but it is what it is.
Great video man.
The smartphone is a dead platform. We're just coasting now.

Edit: Also to add when will you review LG V50?, still no other tech channels did a review on it which i think is a sleeper phone this year.
LG Camera is Only as Good as The Person that can use it.. Not everyone is capable of using LG Manual Controls
Not entirely true. Anyone can learn and improve their skills. It doesn't require a $15 app purchase to get those tools to learn on LG or Sony. That, and there's nothing stopping you from starting with these high quality HDR and pro modes, but leaving the app full auto. For example, ua-cam.com/video/WuhIx9WWpBc/v-deo.html the exposure in this video was full auto, but to keep from getting soaked I set the manual focus as close as I could to get those rain drops. Full manual controls, even at 240FPS are absolutely killer.
I think it's more important to respect my audience, and talk about the most advanced use they can get out of their purchase, than to say "naw, you probably should only slum it on auto modes, but also buy this $1300 phone".
Your last sentence is what separates enthusiasts and normies.
LG is better
