The soundtrack of this movie was probably the most unique theater experience I've ever had. It felt psychedelic the third act of the movie had me completely enthralled. It's such a shame such an amazing movie didn't get more attention. This film is also a benchmark for feminism done right instead of the ghostbusters remake. It's a completely female led cast but they don't go out of the way to explain to the audience about how amazing women are; it simply shows it in a way that doesn't affect the story telling experience.

If I may quote the father of cosmic horror.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
This movie was an absolute delight pure blissful cosmic horror exploring complicated and baffling ideas about approaching an entity that is so unlike us that it's very existence harms us even though it itself is a indifferent to our existence

The climax of this movie truly shows what terror feels like. It wasn't horrifying. It was terrorizing. It chills your bones. It wasn't necessarily scary, but it was shocking in such a way that you're completely frozen.
Stephen King defines "terror" as the suspenseful moment in horror before the actual monster is revealed. This is what that moment felt like. It was revealing the actual horror of the alien, but it wasn't quite there yet. And yet it still was a terrible feeling.
    Great movie.

He understood that identity is a cop out, everything is dissociated, everything is one. And as soon as he changed so did his mind. Through those alien manifestations and through his transmutations he experienced a transcendental epiphany. At that moment he realized the shape his body took was meaningless and destruction was the eventual outcome which he ached for. Hallucinogens can be dangerous because they can change your irreparably, and that may distance you from your peers and lose the sense community and belonging to the human family, instead want to assimilate to the chaos of reality.

The music made the final confrontation scene. It's just so incredibly alien, synthetic and yet it reaches you so deeply. I get this strange feeling that this is what our mothers or other people sounded to us when we were in the womb, and the outside sounds and voices got distorted by both the amniotic fluid and the fact that we were inside someone. Surreal and yet very beautiful.

We do get a lot of trash films that make way too much money, and every years cinemas are flooded with dull uninspired action flicks or crappy comedies/ horror movies but I was thinking about it there have been quite a few superb brilliant thought provoking movies that have come out in the last decade. Movies like this (Annihilation), Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Gravity, The Martian, District 9, Sunshine and Inception and etc... still tons of fantastic movies coming out made by some incredible directors. We are lucky to be in a age where movies like these can be made (:

sparkkyarbiter unfortunately, they aren't made for the general audiences. Because the general audiences want everything explained to them, and to be spoonfed. If it requires any sort of thought or intelligence to understand, then it flops at the box office, and thus director's and producers are afraid to fund such a film.

I find somethings in film hard to explain but easy to watch. I would agree the whole spoon feeding that the theaters have to do nowadays is annoying?!!! It’s like why can you people not try and make a small effort to learn something or just try and understand what is going on in this film and not just sit there going,”oh that was weird?!! What did I even watch?” And just dismissed anything that you saw. It is so frustrating, and I can see how the makers of this films could get annoyed with the people who see their films and don’t learn anything from them. Luckily for them there are people who do want to watch these films and learn something new.

This film made me feel horror like no other film ever did, and the soundtrack was one of the reasons for that. Listening to this, i still get scared as if *some of the things in the film* are gonna hunt me or something that i feel like i'm gonna throw up. I can't describe it properly, but that utter horror that one feels toward something that doesn't even make sense, but still you can't escape it- that is very well described by this music. Truly well done.

to me, this is what my anxiety feels like..?
it's almost as if it's a cloud that's washing over me. it's unknown. big. _foreboding._ i know it's there. it knows that _i_ know. i beg for the feeling to leave me at once, to give me peace of mind. the feeling stays, and i remain anxious. it's looming there, shadowing me and whatever i'm feeling. it gently pokes and tugs at me, i feel it coming from all directions and yet from nowhere at all. it's there. i can feel my brain fogging up, yet i've never thought so clearly. i'm constantly haunted by it. but as soon as the feeling ebbs away? i'm at peace. for now.
this music is so eerily beautiful. it's deep and haunting and *_beautiful._*

How are the books? I really loved the film, but I think three books can't be reduced to a single 2 hours motion picture. I really need to read them, I have to expand the world I saw. It was one of the most mesmerizing sci fis I had ever watched. I hadn't seen a film so trippy since Enter the Void

    • @ChrisF07
      @ChrisF07 6 років тому +10

If you thought the movie was weird and trippy, then the books will most certainly hook you. Mesmerizing as hell. As far as the book reducing is concerned, I would say that Garland's movie borrows a few ideas from the second and third books, but never really adapts them. It's mostly the first one with a totally different ending and a good chunk of the places the group visit changed (a certain geological anomaly the team explores takes about 40-50% of the first book, but is absent from the movie). I might even say that the film is far from the most literal and faithful adaptation as far as plot, places and events are concerned, but Garland truly manages to keep and enhance the atmosphere and tone of the novels.

*EDIT* I know the song is done by Moderat, my copy of the OST made no mention unfortunately.
Goddamn i'm so obsessed with the synth use and that entire scene at the lighthouse, something about it is so damn captivating. It really draws out all your senses, this almost voice like synth growling and sonically contorting along with the mind bending visuals. I think this the first time a simple infliction of a score gave me butterflies in my stomach and sort of jarred me for a second. As an audiophile, audio engineer and instrumentalist I just wanna give Ben and Geoff *AND* Moderat a massive thank you and hug for shaking me out of my current jaded music composing funk.
And damn you Garland, always loved everything that man's touched. Hope him and Danny get back together and maybe have a John Murphy/Ben Salisbury/Geoff Barrow score that film..... OOoooooooh man that would be milk and honey!

"A true warrior knows that he lives in a predatorial universe. He can never let his guard
down. Wherever he looks, he sees an incessant fight, and he knows that it deserves his
respect, because it is a fight to the death. He knows that he can only give the
very best of himself under conditions of maximum tension. For that reason, he seeks out
his opponent the way a fighting rooster does - with avidity, with delight, knowing that the next step is decisive. His opponent is NOT his fellow man, but his own attachments and weaknesses, and his grand challenge is to compress the layers of his energy until they won't expand when his life ceases, so that his awareness does not die.
"A warrior knows that what gives sense to his life is the challenge of death, and death is a
personal matter. It is a challenge for each one of us, and one which only sincere warriors
accept. Seen from this point of view, the worries of ordinary people are just expressions of their their egomania.”
