For super smooth surfaces like the brake caliper pistons are supposed to have, I prefer to use melamine sponges. They are very pliable, cost next to nothing and have no abrasives. If these can’t do the job, I use foam backed nail polishing sticks, which are available with up to 4000 grit, also very cheap and effective.
