This is a great idea, because a lot of people are going to spend $100-$200 on new tires anyway, so why not try this before purchasing new ones. I've done this a lot on tires over the years.
The rear tires on my Spartan ZTR are aggressive enough to hold me on hillsides very well. They are also radials. I am hoping they last a long time because I bet they arent cheap to replace.
Little late to this vid, but I put atv tires on two of my mowers over 9 years ago and traction! Never looked back. Still more tread than I will ever use, when the mowers go, I'll keep the wheels and tires. If the wheels don't fit, take the tires off,use them again!
We have a tire groover that we can either cut small sipes or larger grooves, it gets hot kinda like a hot knife thru butter as it cuts, does make a difference.
+G Packard You have a recommendation for the best tire for better traction on a zero turn. Our zero turn is very lite, not being able to afford a commercial model yet. The factory turf tires just are not doing it. Wanted to fill them with water but im afraid extra weight will burn up the motors sooner then normal. So thought about going with Carlisle's Multi Trac CS or there Super Lug. Im worried the super lug will tear up customers lawns being a V tread. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Me and my business partner watch all your videos here in Tennessee.
I really enjoyed this video, George! I will file this little tip away for when I need it. Thanks for sharing. Hope you and the family are doing great and I hope your new business is taking off.
Mine wants to spin on wet grass, tread is good, but my traction sucks like if your cutting grass in the morning when it's still damp. Is there anything you can put on your tires? This is a regular lawn tractor not a zero turn..thanks brother, cool video. Also I have minor slopes, most of yard is flat with inclines, happens alot when I'm turning and trying to cut around trees.
Kyle, all tires will spin on wet grass. The only thing i know to help you out would be to add a little weight to the machine, but it would have to be done evenly.

Our Husq is awful. We have news tires on it and it slips and slides all over the place, even on pavement. If the grass is wet, you are spinning tires no matter how slow you go. My boss thinks he probably overinflated the tires. I can't do anything with a slope or it's down the hill I go. Aggravates the hell out of me. LoL
Question??? I replaced worn out stock rear tires on my toro titan with after market tires because they were not $200 plus. I noticed that my deck height would not let me cut as high as with stock. Has anyone else experienced their cutting heights changing? I want to pay less for tires but I have some customers that insist on long grass so I cant drop any height with a tire choice.
All day long brother anytime you change the tires you change the cutting height learn to adjust your mower accordingly it doesn't take long within the first day you'll have it figured out
wheel slippage on hills and even in tight turns is a problem on my lightweight 42 inch Deere, so this might be the answer if I had that type of tread, even better then wheel weights, thanks.
@@concretesailors no I didn't, getting rid of two of the properties that were causing me the problem is what solved it. But I do plan to cut groves in a couple of run flat tires that are worn down to slicks. I have the mulch kit and when the hinged door broke on the inside, I just rigged up a handle on the outside and a latch to secure the handle and it works better than new.
you ever use those v shape tread tires on mowers? you usually see them on tractors. i was about to get a pair but wasn't sure how they preform. they make them for mowers. said there good on traction and won't cause that much damage when turning . also how many hours you change tires in Florida?
For suspension :-) But there are tyres around that dont use air ugly looking things but they work but expensive. Military use them and have seen them on JD,s
Seems bogus to me. I've seen micro-siping improve wet / snow traction. Siping (cuts) across the width of the tire for increased traction. No actual rubber removed.
+G Packard we love your honest and truthful take on employees. On the other hand I feel like it's got to a point where you're beating a dead horse and that you're using it as an outlet for your frustrations more than teaching something or adding something to the community. That's all. No disrespect. Just my opinion.
I do this to the bottoms of my bare feet 🦶🔥 Nobody. I repeat. *NOBODY* can beat me in a footrace now

good for you brother
I do some very steep slopes and do slide often times. I'll run this by bossman and see if he'll give it a go. Thanks for the good advice.
your welcome
Cutting grooves in tires is called siping. There are special tools to do it which may extend the life of the tire vs. siping it with a grinder.
Will look into Thanks!
Na,I get the same wear out of my mower tires using a grinder works just fine. Now on a high speed race car mileage may vary :)

I agree. I have Carlisle all trail on my ferris z2

Tire retreaders work great, and a little safer then a grinder.

I have seen tires with a bunch small screws in them as well, cool tip and glad to see videos from you again George.
john houston that would be called studs you stud
ttslick44 haha! You *STUD!*
I'm That Guy, did you cut the groove all the way around, or just a 10 inch line?
We do the same thing for our winter snow removal tractors, never thought to do it on the lawn tractors though. thanks for the tip!
Thanks! Have you checked out any of my other videos?
I was waiting for grinder to go to deep and hear you go “whoops” let’s try that again
yeah not gonna happen
LET ME SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAWN MOWER. DECK
LET ME SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF THE. LAWN. MOWER. DECK.
HOW MUCH DO YOU WHAT FOR YOUR GRAVELY ZERO TURN. MOWER
Let the air pressure down a bit will also improve traction
thanks for the tip
I would be more than willing too carve into my tires. But. A before and after would make me more comfortable.
Hey Rasta don't need you to be more comfortable trying to help you out don't want to take my advice don't care
Could you fill with them liquid like they use in tractor tires for traction?
I work for a local law care company I'm sending this to my boss it looks like it works amazing

George, can you please tell me are you using a cutting wheel or grinder wheel and how wide and deep are the cuts?
a grinding wheel and i cut about 3/8 inch

That warrior looks pretty nice in red!
well thank you brohema !

iv been running lite chains for years, no damage to lawn, winter I go to heavier chain for the blowers
seriously ?
yes and claiming step clay hill to boot, all most strait up
no fricken way ? gotta try em
wheel slippage on hills and even in tight turns is a problem on my lightweight 42 inch Deere, so this might be the answer if I had that type of tread, even better then wheel weights, thanks.
give it a try.
Dude... I have the same zero turn mower.. 42inch Deere. Did you do this, and did it help with slipping?
@@concretesailors no I didn't, getting rid of two of the properties that were causing me the problem is what solved it. Just gave me an idea for drag for the GIE this year, if I make it.
for drag ?
zero turn Drag Racing.
that would be cool.
what about the tire pressure when you mowing
you ever use those v shape tread tires on mowers? you usually see them on tractors. i was about to get a pair but wasn't sure how they preform. they make them for mowers. said there good on traction and won't cause that much damage when turning . also how many hours you change tires in Florida?
I've never personally used them. in FL. we change them out about every 3 months i believe.
Fill the tires with calcium,,,and use sheet metal hex head screws in the hi part of the tread Oh,,,put a foam cover on your mic for the wind noise
michael, thanks for sharing and i have but the winds that day were bad
Do you still have the supply yard?
that's a pretty good idea. I bet that wind was pretty annoying lol
Always windy here in WI
Would this work on tires for plowing snow on pavement?
Not sure, never done it.
Go use the Smart Turf Tires, Carlisle. Nice tread.
sure just spend a shitload of money on them !
hmm, S Load??? not sure what youre referring to. just a little bit more than the regular treads.
Would you recommend bolt on or welded wheelie bars after this traction mod?
don't bother
Do you like the gravley mowers
yes
I'm trying to figure how to get rid of tires that need air , it's only a lawnmower what do we need rubber for
For suspension :-) But there are tyres around that dont use air ugly looking things but they work but expensive. Military use them and have seen them on JD,s
Thanks for the tip!! That's great
Interesting idea, would have never thought of that, have always gone with studs or claw tires.
Thanks for the tip
i don't think i will be doing that with my brand new tires anytime soon
your loss bud
Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure!
WILL YOU TAKE A PICTURE OF ALL 4 SIDES AND SEND IT TO ME NOW
F*** no.
I just hammer naiils all the way through
just get tire chains and wheelweights😂
Great tip. I will try this.
Sounds good! let me know how it worked for you.
Buy cheaper, longer-wearing trailer tires in the appropriate size, & then sipe like this (in both directions) for the win-win.
thanks for sharing
If possible, sandwich another non-cutting disk with the abrasive disk to act as a depth stop to prevent getting too deep and to speed up the process!
thanks for sharing
Bill Cenne What?
great idea
Awesome idea! Thanks!
your welcome
how's the vape shop
We are going good
Good video sir that's good ideal
Just put some chevron tread tires on it like I do.
Can you make a video of this mower hill capabilities now;
Will see what i can do!
+G Packard Thank you , nice vids
awesome vid, I am goin to try it!!!
Thanks!
I’m curious if you tried it and what you thought?
Sounds like a good idea. It'll be my luck they'll go flat
no problems as of yet
If you dont go deeper than the top of the tire rubber your fine.
Nice. Thanks!
thanks Randy
Sweet!
filmed in HD...
you okay? not like you.
don't be a dick !
HD = yes. yeah, i think i was tired and the sun was directly in my eyes as i was trying to film this. but thank you for giving a shit .
Just groove your tires and dont worry about George hes fine.
That's clever!
Thanks!
Easy to replace
Not sure what you mean by that
Seems bogus to me. I've seen micro-siping improve wet / snow traction. Siping (cuts) across the width of the tire for increased traction. No actual rubber removed.
REALLY ? YOU MEAN I CUT MY TIRES UP FOR THE FUCK OF IT ? your an idiot !
And I guess you would drill holes in the bottom of a leaky boat to let the water out!
I do motocross racing
us too brother
Do you have a son that races
I have two and a daughter as well.
Ops a little to deep dare
ops wtf are you talking about ?
I believe you lose your man card for doing something like that
@mario.
lol. Damn dude.
+Rob Shumway lol
Do more vids like this and less about shitty employees.
Thanks for the recommendations!
sorry that i told the blatant truth about them. my mistake ?
