Netflix has over 300 of these shows and after the success of Squid Game, it’s invested another $2.5 billion dollars into K-dramas. In this episode Andy spends 10 weeks watching 10 K-dramas to understand how Hallyu or the Korean Wave is taking over Hollywood.

Hollywood only makes movies that is filled with curses, naked women, drugs, and violence.
KDrama is clean, fun, with interesting plots, and funny.
Hope KDrama takes over all of Hollywood that has become demonic. Never again will I go back watching and Hollywood or American filth.

not such a short time, I've been watching Kdramas and Kpop since 2002 and the Hallyu was already big in East Asia. I felt Kpop would go global some way or another. btw the best way to watch it was Arirang channel on cable

    Reasons why Kdramas are popular:
    1. Very good storyline, not jeeding violence and sex to be entertaining
    2. The content can be deep, bringing out moral issues
    3. They are able to make very interesting historical shows which show you Korean history
    4. The technical side..very well done like every episode is like a well made movie
    5. The scenery, the costumes are beautiful
And many more..like the true depiction of what Korea was like in the 80's in Reply 1988
The very handsome, tall, lean and clean looking kdrama actors...

There’s also the fact that Asia has the largest population and Korean dramas are more culturally relevant to us than Hollywood shows
      It’s a simple numbers thing.
Chinese and Indian people are more likely to enjoy a Korean show over a Hollywood show

They also aren’t afraid to critique their society in a thought provoking way. Many of the shows bring light to bullying, domestic violence, child abuse, political corruption, cults under the illusion of church, xenophobia, etc. I’ve learned so much about Korean society just through watching kdramas. I’ve been done with Hollywood for some years now. I’m kinda glad people are seeing through the BS Hollywood has been feeding us, thinking we wouldn’t look elsewhere.

Very stupid wishful thinking, it is not a myth anymore how bad it is after the 2030 World Expo bid result that has shown the non-popularity of Korean Kpop, Kdrama, "Gangnam Style"s' shake, shake, twist, twist, dance, and dance totally Westernized non -local boring cultures!
Out of 165 votes Korea was 29 against its opponent Riyakh 119, despite the over 500 days to over 100 cities' desperate promotions with the all-out performance of all the popular Korean celebrities including one from the "Octopus Game".
Who cares much about those now? Look as if only the Western countries are popping their allies up for wishful popularities. In recent years, there have been over 100 K Drama, and K Variety shows which have been completed and couldn't find any buyers.
      The whole world is laughing!

It’s super hero’s are not of glitzy outrageous Hollywood kind, but those who stands tall against oppression, be it as in the most humble existence, to protect what is dear to them, their family. It’s another drama that shows the essence of Korea, and how can anyone not relate?

I’m a Nigerian and my first unofficial kdrama was jumong in 2006 and I’m saying unofficial because I didn’t know it was kdrama then, because it was dubbed in English.
Then my first official kdrama with Korean language and English subtitles was in 2010 and that was boys over flowers.
Nigerians have been watching kdramas for a longer time and some didn’t even know.
I used to buy DVD on kdramas a lot, like I had a bag full of kdramas dvds.

Asian content was heavily consumed in nigeria from the 2000s and it's gotten bigger. Literally every single Nigerian knows the Philippine series "Mara and Clara" (just ask lol) and so much more. So with the high amount of asian films in Nigeria. We didn’t care what countries they came from back then.

I’m british and started watching kdrama in about 2003 when I was 17. I discovered kdrama through Japanese drama and I had discovered Japanese drama through anime. Back then the internet was still pretty angelfire-esque. I learned about these dramas on forums and livejournal communities and used dodgy chinese p2p websites to download the episodes. My first drama was ‘full house’ which I loved but it was ‘stairway to heaven’ which really grabbed my soul and refuses to let go to this day. I had never seen a drama or movie before that wasn’t afraid to give the main characters such terrible burdens and tragedies that sees them crying in a painful primal way until you’re crying along too. This is the Korean culture of ‘Han’.
I’ve never seen it in Hollywood. Hollywood loves a happy ending which is characteristic of the old American dream. Korea is a country that knows tragedy with invasion after invasion, families separated across borders and everything else. No wonder they create dramas and movies that tap in to raw pain in such a way.
Im glad kdrama is getting the recognition it deserves, and as a longtime fan im proud that it’s kdrama that finally has English speaking audiences finally open their eyes to non-English content.

The case for South Korea is really special and it needs a lot of study to fully understand, and i don't think nobody else has got a good picture of wth happened. But i bet my favorite shoes that Kpop and BTS is 60% of it. And this is a pretty stupid and arrogant way of thinking, it's basically Führer mentality if you discect it to it's core. Most countries are capable of producing good quality content, just not all of them fund art and culture as a political weapon as much as others, wich leads to entertainment cultures in a lot of places being less huge

As an Asian (Indian), South Korean content is much more culturally relatable than standard Hollywood production. As for Hollywood's dearth of good content for the last couple of decades, that's the subject matter for another discussion altogether (its movies today are either about comic book characters, fantasies and/or aliens; nothing remotely relates to the human condition, nor appeals to the heart). For decades, Hollywood entertainment was what the rest of the world had easy access to, and so despite being a culture that was nearly as alien as Hollywood's own subject matters today, world audiences made do with it. It also sold an aspirational lifestyle to much of the world. This is what is not working anymore. The American way of life has lost its appeal, as has stories from this land. So now, when I have access to slick productions from South Korea with heartwarming content and a context that's so much closer to home, I'm simply not interested in watching anything American anymore. And if Indians & other Asians turn inwards, looking to Seoul for our daily dose of entertainment, well that's more than half of the world's population, right? 😊

The Korean storytelling is incredible. They believe in actual character development. Kdramas, do not have half of the town shot full of bullets and and the leads already having a skanky bedroom scene in episode one. Kdramas' are not hammering politics down my throat. What they do have is writing so dynamic that you almost exhausted from the rollercoaster of emotions watching the program. The character acting is next level . Romance is down to earth and realistically portrayed. The writer's deliver quality which in turn allows the production team and the actors to deliver quality. and all of it delivers without having drop a f bomb five minutes in.

There’s two things that draws me to watching so much Korean content - first is that shows are usually only one season long. I don’t have to wait a year (or more) for the next season. It’s a self contained story so there’s less chance of it losing steam or a feeling of milking something until it’s dead. The second is that it feels more original than most of what western media (specifically the US) has been putting out lately. I love a good super hero movie but I’m burnt out on them. Adaptation after adaptation done poorly. Entertainment in the west feels like a money grab and not about telling a story or loving the art. I am afraid with Korean entertainment they may go this way eventually and repeat the same formulas. K-pop has seen some of this. But for now I find Korean entertainment much more entertaining in most cases than western entertainment.

I've been a long-time kdrama and jdrama watcher since early 2000s: Winter Sonata Bae Yong Jun era, Stairway to Heaven and Lovers in Paris.
From what I've seen...with the entrance of investments of Hulu, Netflix, Disney to Kdrama, it kinda change Kdrama.
First, multiple seasons dramas. I hate unnecessary multiple season dramas. Nowadays, I didn't delve directly into any new kdramas like I used to. Why? Cause I am terrified if that drama will have more than 1 season. Multiple seasons dramas, in my opinion, makes the writer lazy to do character development, cause they could always do it in the next episodes or next seasons.
Second, the Kdramas nowadays lack their "cultural" context, compare to how they used to. If you have watched the Reply Series, you'll understand. Guaranteed, I may not always understand the reference, but then when I went to forum discussions about that dramas like in Soompi, someone would wilingly explain the cultural context. And that makes me rewatch the episode and enrich my experience.
Third, less cursing and bed/nudity scenes. I think being Asian helps in the romance department. Cause, the writer would need to find a way to heightened the sexual tension without the cheap solution of male lead "eating the face" of the female lead. Watch Hidden Love (chinese drama), Episode 15, where the ml celebrated the fl's birthday and he shot the question, "can I woo you?". They are standing soooclose, but still not touching each other. It's like everyone could see that they like each other, but they are not official bf-gf yet, so no one would act on that gravity pull that they both felt. It reminds me of what the expert said, when you like someone, you can hide your facial expressions but not your body language. I don't know whether it is the director (director of Hidden Love is female btw) or the actor's idea, cause whenever they are in one scene, you could juat see how the ml, his body naturally gravitates toward the fl (but not in a creepy way). In Kdramas, they also often use this kind of tension, that suddenly breaks due to sudden guest coming or a phone call. It is annoying sometimes, but the pay-off later on feels more satisfying. Even the weirdest part was that one jdrama I watched where the ml changed the way he addressed the fl...and oh my gosh...all the feels, cause not only the ml is younger but he is also the fl's junior. By changing the way he addressed her, he said a lot more than just her name. It is him acknowledging that he thinks of her as a woman, prospective girlfriend and future wife.... Sigh...

@@phoenixxena8194 There are a few kdramas that are more than a season but for the most part a majority of them still follow that one season model and there’s definitely some gems that have come out. I’ve seen the reply series (1988 is one of my favorites) and the snapshot of Korean culture at that time was my favorite thing about it too! Some dramas still have that some maybe not as much but the stories are still worth exploring because they just do story telling still in that Korea vs west way. You put it really well about the tension between characters. It’s a lot more emotionally shown rather than explicit and obvious which I like too.

In the early 2000s, it became known in Japan, Taiwan, China, and Southeast Asia, and began to experience a boom. Eventually, it spread to the Middle East, and in particular, 'Jewel in the Palace' recorded a monumental viewership rating of over 90% in Iran. The characteristic of K-drama is that it is fiercely accepted without rejection not only in Western cultures but also in Islamic cultures.

Short answer: Hollywood is broken, runs on fear, and keeps making the same five movies over and over. Once you've watched a few good k-dramas, you realize how badly written 90% of what comes out of Hollywood is. And even then, most of the good stuff is coming from newcomers/outsiders like streaming platforms and studios like A24.
It should also be noted that in Hollywood, nearly 80% of film script writers are men (and a few years ago it was closer to 90%). In Korea, about 60% of writers are women. Being closer to 50/50 surely gives an advantage on connecting with a larger audience vs. having writers rooms that include a token woman to talk over and ignore.

I noticed a lot of these tv shows are filmed more like a movie and are aesthetically pleasing. Because they don't show sex and violence the stories have to rely on good story telling, compelling plots and subplots, acting & characters.

Their companies would make more money, with tv shows, films, muaic you export a whole "culture" not only their values or lack of them, but also food, aesthetics, clothes, etc etc
So it feels weord that the world needs the recognition of the west, as if they were superior or sth... If the west doesn't know about you or doesn't approve you then it seems it's bad or poor quality... ?

@@ireneserrano4570well, the West is also diverse and not just america even if the states have at first mainly exported their imperialism to the dying western empires during the cold war, to a point that it has almost erased our own cultures in the minds of too many people from western Europe.
However Europeans at least since the last century have always appreciated Asian, American and African cultures (except the nationalists that felt treatened of course, and the imperialist elites that wanted to control the world but we all saw how they were slowly replaced by disconnected neoliberal hypocrit politicians that we can't get rid of) Asian foods either middle eastern, indian or east asian are more popular than american fast foods in most EU countries.
French speaking countries in the West have been the biggest consumers of japanese products globally (mangas, games and animes) ever since japan started to export their culture after their empire went down. The french kid tv shows in the 80s to the early 2000s were more dominated by japanese cartoons than american ones..(it started because of how television channels and institutions managed their programming and contracts, it was not about sponsors or the people demand at first) it has reverted a bit since but its because of how technologies, streaming etc have evolved and how television has been slowly going downhill and dominated by disney..
Translating content is a very big factor, which is why even in Europe we dont have access to a lot of our neighbours content if Netflix doesnt buy it. English has become the norm but still not many europeans outside western Europe speak it, which reduces their access to non national content, while hollywood translated their cinema into almost every language of the world.
As for Western validation, I think its more because of how your own elites always look at our wealth (or whats left of it) but honnestly who cares ? We are just humans and I wish netflix would leave space for some african cinema competition rather than appropriating everyone's history and race swapping it because of how the united states are focused and divided on races...

@@zenymax8348 I just want to point out from your comment, how you don't really mention China and other Asian countries when you speak about Europe valuing Asian culture, cuisine etc. You also well pointed out how Japanese food is fashionable and on trend in France, and everywhere else in EU i'm telling you, also Japanese cultuee is known... Also Kfood, Kdramas, Kpop, Kcosmetics... There is a reason to why precisely the 2 biggest lackeys of the USA in Asia, one was funded by USA before WW2 nd then used as a trial place for nuclear bombs to give a message to Russia/China, and the other one, Korea, was couped, messed up and later on provoked a war, just to go against socialism and China and both were to set USA military bases and use them as a base against China, and well, we see also the USA interfetence everywhere like in the Philippines where recently they have opened more military bases, interference in Thailand, etc etc. So no, EU, is still pretty much controlled by USA and their mogul lords, the owners of the finnancial system, banking, big Corps etc.
I'm european and i have lived in China for 4 years, i'm back at EU and i also consume other Asian cultures, so i can tell you. There is an exporting and selling of Japanese and Korean culture, and also the EU countries are also willing to spread it and consume it, so it's not like China doesn't spread its culture, bit simply EU is contaminated by propaganda, they have been fed certain information through TV, social media etc. I have lived through it in my 40+ years of life. People know nothing about China but the typical 3 things they are told about and the rest is all lies spread from mainstream media about politics, human rights blahblah Consuming Japanese food and culture is COOL, consuming Korean food and culture is great, consuming Chinese food is cheap, dirty and unhelathy cause it's all MSG. You'll see all Chinede restaurants specially in Northern countries with their "we don't use MSG" sign in the door, just like yankees do, cause it is belived as a universal truth that chinese food is practically made of MSG. While nobody knows that MSG was created by Japamese scientists, that they created Ajinomoto company and it's a hugr monopoly that even plays on lawsuits in EU so that no other companh sells their MSG. Why? cause all the fast food, all the packaged food use it. So Westerners consume it daily and yet MSG is a Chinese thing.
People don't even know that most famous things from the Jaoanese and korean cultures derive from the chinese culture. Japanese architectural style, their kimomos, the ikebana etc etc they all are from Chinese culture, mostly from the Tang dynasty, where Buddhism spread from China to Japan and with it, the TCM, traditional chinese medicine, the food nd cooking techniques, the architecture, outfits, painting styles, literary styles etc
Same with Korea, and most of SE Asia...
In food world we call Gastrodiplomacy and Food Nationalism. But apply it to everything. We are being actively sold their cultursl producgs and even are told that those are typical characteristic of their country ehile ignoring and erasing China from the equation.
Recently i watched a SKorean food show where they promoted Korean ramyeon/ramen in Enoshima, Japan. First of all Ramen/Ramyeon comes from the Chinese La Mian 拉面, but ok. Funny enough they sold to them Jjajangmyeon and Jjampong which were copied from China's Lu Cai foodstyle in the NorthEast, Shandong province, Tianjin etc. Then they export this "korean" doshes and they are glorified in EU as awesome korean food, just like people here call "Gyoza" the Chinese Jiaozi饺子 even when they refer to a Chinese restaurant food they will call them gyozas, when thr Japanese "stole" it during their invassion/occupation of "Manchukuo"... But people have no idea.
In TV there are always programs or mentions about JP/K traditions, culture, food but none of Chinese and mamy other SE Asia cultures.
This is all part of the USA propaganda plan, going on for decades and decades if not for a century already.
We don't have access to Eastern European or other european content not becuse of translation but becausr of Media chamnels not eanting to Program those contents. as i already said it is all done for a reason. In Ireland, in Spain and i'm guessing elsewhere too literally every single day at any time you have USA films, USA shows, USA variety shows and documentaries and tv shows. I'd say 90% is USA programming. Then in some national channel you'll have a couple of native shows, and a couple of european documentaries mostly french or german. That's it.
In Eastern EU as in Russia they have the cusrom of translating the English films/series with a native speaker speakong on top of the OG voices, it's sth thry gradually can change byt that's their tradition. Also, they know or learn less English compar3d to Western EU because they obviously live in anothet sphere of influence, culturally connected to Russia, and trading with Russia, doesn't matter if they are EU, they were practically put into EU so that they could be controlled ad ordered around economically and put into NATO which is the main reason, as NATO was created by USA to have a US-controlled military against russia. As we have seen through decades of expanding and recently the US-NATO war against Russia.
Anyway, juat saying, control first the Media and the Entertaiemt Media and you'll control the public's opinion and crwate the image of how they see the world and other counteies. Then you can easily sell them any war and say this and that are good, those are the bad ones...

Korea has many talented writers and producers. They are a very academically intelligent country and seem to have a very deep love for learning and curiosity about many different things. You can see that in their youth as well. Psychologically due to their history and culture having been stolen, robbed, or destroyed for many centuries they have held on to very deep emotions and beliefs which could play a huge factor into why they are many great writers there. Also in Asian culture in general, they are more collectivists than individualists. So working as a team is a very natural thing for them. They get things done so orderly and efficiently that great results can come from the great teamwork they shared. Koreans are very emotional people but can also be cold at the same time due to their country's many long struggles and oppression throughout their history that it may have distilled within them a strong sense of self-expression, storytelling, folktales, and myths which you can see throughout their history. An extreme religious divide is a huge part of Korean culture and history too. One half are mainly Buddhists and the other half Christians but many newer generations are becoming athiests. Western influences played a huge part in building South Korea after the war but their own culture and identity is a pride for them that they blend their own future. That is why I believe South Korea has advanced so far in such a short period. There is a definite intention of why they are so motivated. They are trying to build their own country once again after being ripped apart, split, robbed of their own history. They want to make a new name for themselves through what they have been influenced by and by what they believe as Koreans as well. That's why Korea is a very extreme country and that ties alot with emotion. Its a very passionate country with beliefs that set them opposite of each other. Extreme emotions may be a bad thing but countries that have a lot of that tend to really make great stories and music because the feelings have been oppressed for so long and they are so passionate, its eagerly wanting to be released and expressed.

Many influences from different countries, neighboring, trade, wars have all made an impact not knowing it had all been exchanged for so many years. Your perception of 5000 years of Chinese culture is not truly just Chinese but a telling of history of China with the outside world shaping it over centuries but that is what made China as we know it today. many foreign elements have came in and out to shape it. It is so beyond us to make a simple comment. But i appreciate you sharing. I do see where you are coming from though but for South Korea, due to so much lost history they need more time with identity. Post War South Korea with American influence has made a more immediate impact on their culture today with what they know from their past that even Christianity is a part of their culture. No such thing as not true culture or bad, its just one of those different elements that makes that country for what it is. China had many western influences even 5000 years back. Like i said its beyond us and the “good” or “bad” doesn’t exist, its all what makes a country unique.

Like many, I discovered kdramas during COVID. Bored byf most American shows, I found kdramas to be refreshing for a number of reasons:
    1. Innovative storylines that would never come out of Hollywood or familiar storylines told in a completely different way.
    2. The focus on plot and character development
    3. They usually last only one season, assuring that you are going to get the end of the story relatively promptly and don't have to worry about the show being cancelled.
    4. The above also means that you have a large number of new series to sample each year. If a particular kdrama doesn't appeal, you can simply drop it (and I've dropped plenty), safe with the knowledge that several more are on the way.
There are some truly excellent kdramas that are among the best TV I’ve watched.

    • @donviajero2580
      @donviajero2580 8 місяців тому +3

Of course kdramas aren’t perfect. All too often you get:
      1. An over-reliance on tropes that eventually become repetitious. This includes the inevitable love triangles, a girl-next-door type falling for some brooding gloomy supernatural being (i.e., Twilight all over again) or winning over some spoiled rich kid who only needed the love of a good woman to overcome the trauma of a luxurious neglected childhood and stop acting like a jerk.
      2. Leading male characters who are wooden at best, often portrayed by actors who were clearly chosen for their looks rather than their acting ability (not that there aren’t some excellent Korean male actors, which makes some of these casting decisions all the more problematic).
      3. Gratuitous and often gory violence, even where it’s not necessary to the story.
      4. 30-year-olds in relationships that would seem immature to high school students elsewhere, (which perhaps comes from Korean teens seemingly being kept too busy to date?).
      5. Some of the most passionless unconvincing kissing scenes I’ve ever watched. It’s all and good to avoid gratuitous sex, but there is such a thing at taking it too far. I can’t believe that Koreans are that bad at kissing. Of course, that would help explain why so many young Korean women are so disappointed with their male peers these days and are refusing to date, let alone get married.

It was showing every week on ZBC and l fell in love, l would get so upset if l missed an episode, mind you l was about 9/10 years old at time 😂. l didn't get access to kdramas again until high school with boys over flowers and Iris.I was around 15 at the time, only to forget about them again and then finally rediscover my love for them in 2019 by rewatching all 3 above mentioned dramas and I've been binging ever since 🤣🤣🤣. The story telling, production and visuals are soooo good and they have so many unique, beautiful and touching stories to tell, everyone can find something they like, kudos to South Korea for being able to do this.👍👌

As someone who has watched korean entertainment from the early 80s, I would say the “reply series” (reply 1988, reply 1994, reply 1997) was probably top 5 among everything I have ever watched. Maybe it’s because it brings back memories for me and it truly depicts those times. Korea back then was a lot different from what it is now. It had a lot more street stores and the culture was different as well. If you see old videos of korea posted on youtube, you can kind of get a gist of the differences.

oh my, "Jewel In The Palace" was the first k-drama I watched in my life, and that was in early 2000's. I watched Chinese dubbed version that being aired in Malaysia's 8tv. I got hooked for that drama because of story line.
Since after my eldest sister started her uni life, she introduced me k-movie "The King and The Clown" and k-drama "My Girl" both in Korean language. She introduced these 2 shows to me because she was a big fan for Lee Joon-Gi back then, and I found out those emotions of characters are best to connect with me when it was in Korean rather than in my mother tongue. Then my sister introduced "Princess Hours" to me.
Since then, I totally immersed in k-drama world other than Japan anime world... all these years I have watched a lots of k-drama. Other than "Jewel In The Palace", "Healer", "Good Doctor", "Ghost Doctor", "Rooftop Prince", "The K2", "W", "Guardian:The Lonely and Great God", "Five Fingers", "Hotel Del Luna", "Tale of the Nine Tailed (season 1&2)", "D.P", "Reborn Rich" are my favourite. The reason people love Korean drama is because of how Korean people are. It's not only good storytelling but it's just how they are. The personalities, how they fall in love in relationships, The language, The sincerity and many aspects of it. It's really changing people all over the world. In a good way. I have never seen so many people dancing on the streets because of K-pop. The youth all over the world of all color dancing and connecting all over the world. And now people who are shy are actually cool. It is changing and shaping the culture in the West. It has also brought femininity back to the West. Really opened up perspectives and how people see things watching Korean drama. Hollywood can survive I just think we just have more options now to choose from. Hollywood mix beautiful pictures but doesn't tell good captivating stories. They are so concerned about the quality of the picture that they seem to miss the substance.

There was already an underbelly of huge fandom internationally that was accessing kdrama through “unofficial” websites like mysoju back in early to mid 2000’s that fed directly into the more legitimate avenues of streaming later on. The word of mouth from here massively helped into even getting these shows into streaming platforms

It was an already huge community of people watching and listening. There was also lots of blogs and youtubers explaining things like "oppa", aspects of the culture, why drinking turned to the side and accepting things with two hands.
During all this time I saw the dramas evolving. Saw the increase in recognition.
I still prefer the one season k-drama than the american model. I got burned too many times by tv-shows being canceled or dragged down beyond recognition.

I enjoyed your video and the effort it took to put this together (10 DRAMAS, not 2hr movies!). As someone who experience living in Korea and looking at SKorea from outside, let me just add one element you didn’t include (perhaps intentionally). The Underdog factor. Korea is a country that has stood tall despite all the bullying and atrocities inflicted by its neighboring countries for all of its history. That stance represents 99% of the people living in this world today. They want to see and cheer for something that has managed to shine despite the hardship bestowed upon them by others. In most of Korean dramas there is a strong element of “JustIce” because this is what it’s people yearn for. Hardship, be it the communist neighbors (NK, China), Japan (which still discriminates and looks down on its past colonial victim till this day), it’s own military/ authoritarian government in the past and US which still strong arms what it wants from SKorea, we all can empathize. South Korea has never invaded another country, because as its leaders said throughout the centuries, how can you when you know the pain of being invaded so well. Yet it rose from being the poorest to standing tall as one of richest countries in the world, despite having no natural resources to rely on. Asians, which take up 60% of the world population, yearns for someone that represents them, something cool, worthwhile to cheer for. That is what Korea is. Asians (or anyone outside of Hollywood) would rather cheers for Korean contents than American contents as they want to see Asia (or the underdogs) being represented- this is where the hype is coming from.

I started KDramas with CLoY almost four years ago (yep, during the Pandemic), and never looked back (west) again. Had been sick of/disgusted with American TV for over a decade, and was even starting to feel the same way about European and Australian TV. What a breath of fresh air Asian dramas were and still are. I've watched over 300 KDramas and about 125 Korean movies, with a few handfuls of Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese ones as well, and wish I had discovered this treasure trove of fabulous entertainment at least 20 years earlier. Oh, well, I know I will never catch up as there is so much great stuff out there, but I'll definitely have fun trying! Thanks for this interesting video - I've seen every drama you mentioned except for Alchemy Of Souls (not my genre).

I binged the first few episodes of Squid Game, but got distracted and never finished. Before the that my only exposure to Korean media was the movies Oldboy and The Isle, the latter a very strange and disturbing, but also fascinating one. As this year started, I was laid of due to construction at the hotel I work at, and by chance ended up watching a few K-dramas. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (very good), Abyss (not the best but watchable), Tomorrow (pretty good), The Uncanny Counter (still not sure what the title refers to, but pretty great, also introduce me to Kim Se-jeong), and Oh, My Ghost (entertaining, Park-Bo young, obviously adorable). Since then I have seen plenty more, with my favorites probably being Extraordinary Attorney Woo (extraordinary!), Business Proposal (enormously entertaining, silly, hammy, peak Kim Se-jeong, with great chemistry between several characters), and The Glory (very disturbing opening episode, fantastic plot). Also noteworthy: Because This Is My First Life (Jung So-min must have some of the most beautiful and expressive eyes in the world), which eventually led me to Playful (or Mischievous or Naughty) Kiss (with a much younger, yet equally adorable Jung So-min). Male lead was very flawed, yet the story is somehow both cringeworthy and addicting. Recently ended up watching the earlier Japanese and Taiwanese versions (all based on a Japanese manga) Some k-dramas do have some disturbing misogynistic tropes, and a somewhat older one which took that to an extreme was Secret Garden, where the male lead is irredeemably disgusting and vile. Right to the very end. It’s got it all, belittling, stalking harassing, sexually assaulting, and physically confining. All done by the male romantic lead. I have yet to see Boys Over Flowers, apparently an enormously popular older drama which also has an abusive and cruel male lead. Currently watching the last few episodes of He is Psychometric, where the actress who plays the female lead is the same one who portrayed the younger version of the main villain in The Glory. It is nice seeing her play a sympathetic character after her fantastic portrayal of absolute and unrepentant evil.

@@dwp_orange8416 No, but I am hoping I get around to rewatching the first few episodes and finish the rest before the second season comes out. I also need to watch the second season of Uncanny Counter at some point. No, I haven’t seen any more recent movies, though Train to Busan and Parasite are on my list. In fact I have been meaning to watch Parasite since before I was introduced to the wide world of K-dramas. I have learned that the actress who played the young Moon Dong-eun in Glory, and also God in Doom at your service is in Parasite, so that has only increased my interest in it. Her performance as the teenage Dong-eun was heartbreakingly excellent.

@@malaparte1145 I respectfully disagree about Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Most of the main male characters were portrayed very positively, Attorney Jung, Jun-ho, her dad Gwang-Ho, Geu-ra-mi’s father, the guy with fart in his name (the Commander of the Children’s Liberation Army), the jolly monk on Jeju Island. All very sympathetic characters. Sure there are also some unsympathetic men in the show, but I discerned no traces of misandry. If you have any specifics of how Attorney Woo is an example of misandry, please let me know. If possible in English

@@malaparte1145please explain how attorney woo was a man hating drama? Because almost every main male character was represented positively. The male lead is almost perfect at first glance and even though we're shown flaws it never went against him. Even the male characters that weren't happy about attorney woo at first they warmed up to her her treated her with respect, being portrayed in a positive light as well........ so I'm kind of confused. Please explain

I have to be honest as an American that is a native New Yorker in the past couple years. I find that the K dramas, especially the ones that are like police or scary ones. I have truly outdone and I’ll performed American movies and TV shows. I don’t enjoy watching the American shows anymore because they are all very cliché and boring. The Korean shows really have some very original and unique stories, plots, characters that have outshone Hollywood completely.

As a Korean what Korean media differs from our Neighbors Japan and China is that movies, dramas, songs etc have freedom. Freedom to express, freedom to shed light on dark parts of society (This part Japan does as well, but China...lol), and to openly go against the govt (Which I know is common in US but not as much in other asian nations)

Like you said, Japan has freedom of expression too, and there are many dramas that deal with deep social issues. I think what sets K-dramas and J-dramas apart is:
      1. In Japan, Anime is huge so many possible audiences are taken by it.
      2. J-drama is intended exclusively for the Japanese audience and lacks a universal appeal.
      3. Production quality and quantity are overall low. Of course there are some high quality dramas from time to time, but most others just suck, and there are only so many dramas because it’s not a huge industry in Japan to begin with.

@@Sora-ce1zx I would also like to add that the massive difference between Kdrama and Jdramas is acting. Obviously there are amazing Japanese actors but there are a lot of cringe acting that kind of reminds me of anime or theater acting thus it makes me lose interest in the drama even though the plot is good.
Even their production is different. Korean dramas usually take a long time of filming, MOVING (Aug. 2023, Disney+) started filming in Aug. 2021 and ended in July 2022 plus the post production. Even filming romantic comedies last for more than half a year. The chemistry between their actors is also topnotch, that's why viewers just can't help but love Kdramas.

I first watched a Korean drama when I was 15 whilst visiting family in Ghana. It was called Oh Pil Seung. Then I watched All In, which is still one of my favorites of all time. At that time I didn’t know it was Korean, I and many people in Ghana (probably) thought it was Chinese. It was a few months later that my Chinese friend at the time made me aware that it was Korean not Chinese. I was captivated, binged dramas morning, afternoon, & night and soon after became interested in K-pop. Hallyu had such an impact in my life, that at 21, right after graduating from Uni, I got a job in Korea and lived there for 6 years. My partner & I even spent the first few years of married life in Korea. Korean dramas greatest asset is that they offer real humanity in their characters. They teach you about humanity and the little things in life in a way that Hollywood used to, but no longer does.

A lot of kdramas make you admire life, family, and community. I believe this is lost in Hollywood and everyone is tired of the bad writing, narcissistic main characters, and mindless sex. In kdramas when a couple gets together it’s not because of what they can do in bed, they actually have a meaningful connection that is explained by the storytelling. American shows are also kinda depressing I don’t know what it is but they make me feel lonely.
